BERLIN PALACE
The Berlin Palace (Schloss) was the city’s most important historic building and one of Europe’s most spectacular Baroque palaces. It was badly damaged in World War II but could have been restored. Instead, the East German communists demolished it in 1950, an act of unprecedented vandalism. Recently, the exterior of the Baroque palace (dating back to 1698-1716) was reconstructed following the original plans (until 1950, the ‘Schloss’ included a few wings from the Renaissance and even late-Gothic period, but these were replaced by modern buildings). In addition to the Baroque palace, the neo-classical dome, originally built in the mid-19th Century, was also reconstructed. Special features of the Palace are the eleven monumental portals.
The video includes a few images of the nearby Arsenal (Zeughaus), which was built simultaneously with the Palace (1695-1706). It was restored until 1967 after being damaged during the War. According to architect K. F. Schinkel (1781-1841), the Palace and the Arsenal were the only two characteristic classical buildings in Berlin that showed greatness.

So beautiful and totally worth the effort and money. :) That modernist part looks super ugly though. Why?!

Actually, it could have been much worse. The jury chose the 'best' project. At least architect Franco Stella's plan makes a partial reconstruction of the interior of the palace possible in the future. He also was in favor of reconstructing more of the old palace than originally expected.

So true @miniamo. I'm afraid they were or feared they were running out of money. However, let us not forget that for obvious ideological reasons the totalitarian socialist welfare state did not give a single penny for the reconstruction and all costs were on private funds only.

It wasn't a money problem. Even without support of the State. Some people with influence tried to prevent the reconstruction of the Schloss. So the result is a compromise, half reconstruction, half modern and political correct...

Surveys show that most Germans are actually in favour of more reconstructed historic buildings. I think even more than 80% of the younger generation.

I remember the DDR's palace of the Republic, with its strange pinkish glass colour. French, did my military service in (west) Berlin, and we several times visited what was then East Berlin.

Why call it ""Humboldt Forum"" ? Why not "Schlueter Forum" or "Prussia Forum" ? Why give it any strange ""name"" in the first place ? It is the Berlin Schloss, end of. 60 years ago when they reconstructed the Charlottenburg Residence (situated in what was West Berlin) with all its interiors, nobody ever would have come up with a nonsense like that.

Schlüter Forum would be a perfect name! One of the greatest sculptors/Architects of the Baroque. But of course far too 'German'. The name Humboldt is more 'international', the Humboldt brothers spoke French and German, so that is Political Correct. I visited Charlottenburg last year, you can find a video I made about it on my channel. The state rooms in the Berlin Schloss could have been restored like in Charlottenburg, unfortunately this didn't happen...

I loved the reconstruction, but this modern, boring, ugly facade was a big mistake and later replaced with the original facade!
