Berlin Recording Studio Self-Build

Ойын-сауық

See behind the scenes of the construction of one of Berlin's most beloved studios, Impression Recordings. Built in 2015 by Robbie Moore (a.k.a. Robot) and a couple of friends, it has gradually turned into a living, working art piece, workshop and laboratory - full of weird and wonderful instruments, inventions and creative energy, it continues to evolve and turn out recordings for all corners of Berlin's eccentric music scene. It is also home to the semiweekly Robot Report LIVE broadcasts, where Robbie writes songs for his upcoming records live on air.

Really a great journey. Fantastic work with good acoustic science, as the room within a room...and the acoustic panels you did...amzing...I did co-build a studio many years ago and had suspended acoustic panels inside the back wall of the control room, so they would bounce when the sound energy from the main monitors were high :). But it worked well as the studio was built in the middle of various infrastructures from everywhere(above, below, sides),like apartments and stores...and we could record drums at 3 am...

Bloody brilliant. What a great designer, and wood artist you are on top of everything else. But how is it you were able to build and transform so much without owning the space? Will you be able to take much of these materials with you if you need to relocate?

Amazing job sir, I could see from the video that your knowledge of music is superb. I just finished an Audio Engineer degree in Toronto, Canada. I had been into music since early 70s and just wanted to get the technical knowledge. I loved your work on customizing diffuser, absorbers, floating floor and just general do it yourself. One weird question for you since you have vintage organs like Hammond, etc. The key layout of piano is straight forward is there any key mappings you know of for organs? If you know great if not enjoy your accomplishments in life!

Hey glad you liked it! I read a couple of books, the most useful being the one by rod gervais, build it like the pros or something.. but generally I just went with my gut and my vision of what would make an inspiring, aesthetically stimulating studio space. It was and is still a work in progress, trial and error type deal - I think bearing in mind those basic studio design ‘rules’ (angles, ratios etc) is cool, but you have to go with something you feel is going to reflect what you believe in and how you like to work.

Great use of space. Are you recording in the area where the two columns are located? I am wondering if these columns help with sound absorption or cause other acoustic issues. Sound proofing a space for recording purposes involves a high level of technology, specialist materials and construction techniques. Blocking out the low frequencies is an enormous challenge. The artists and recording engineers often spend a long time in these confined and quiet spaces which makes the availability of fresh air and some natural light important. Blocking about 45 dB of sound can be achieved with basic sound proofing and reasonable costs. If you want to block 55 dB or more, the costs escalate and the techniques and materials become specialised and high tech. Beware the power points on the wall, vents and gaps in doors jams, ceiling lights etc. A small hole or gap can channel sound through to the adjacent space. Likewise sound can leak in to the recording room.

Interesting video. What does the new floor beams sit on to isolate them from the concrete floor? Are the wood beams seated on some kind of rubber disc, etc. Nice build you guys did. Thanks. Phil

The walls for the booths are sitting on foam rubber, not sure if that really does that much.. but the entire floors of the booths are floating on rockwool slabs, and not touching the walls. It works pretty well

@@idea_farm Interesting. I am going to move my home studio out of the basement and up on the second floor where I have a lot more room. I can't really float a floor or build detached wall (unless i wanted to give up a lot of space, but I only have a neighbor on one side and they never complained in the past even though my drum room was facing their side of their house. If I move the studio upstairs everything will be on the open side of the house with no neighbors facing me. Thanks.
