Dont orry even germans dont understand every dialect. (Its allways amazing when english speakers complain about the scots, someone speaking bavarian could not comunicate with a frisian speaker, while the saxons live on another planet.)

after living for years now in this region. I realised: The Berlin dialekt is the best language to jell at playing kids in the courd yard. It probably was developed for this specific usecase.

Giovanni No, it is not. First of all it's not Hochdeutsch but Standarddeutsch. It is basically Thuringian with a different accent. Luther printed his bible translation in this dialect and that way it became the standard. In fact it didn't even change much over time. It is fine as a writing languague but to most Germans it sounds dull when speaking it, that's why most prefer dialects. Mostly very young people actually speak it, and they mix it with English and sometimes even Turkish words, absolutely horrible. Dialects are never written except for demonstration purposes or in songs, and there are no rules on how to write them, it's just phonetical.

If you attend a german course, you will learn "Hochdeutsch" Even though some prefer dialect (me for example), you will be able to have a normal conversation with any german native, because everyone speaks "Hochdeutsch"

Well, Guelders (or Kleverländisch in German) was spoken by a very small number of people compared to other dialect speakers. Some linguists called it German Dutch. I am now winkling out this "Dutch origin" plowing through old documents of the area. There are a few dialect circles but not many.

JereFroFilms until you see that middle german and old german is preserved in many of them. Gsait for gesagt? Huus statt Haus? Befertigen statt komplett fertig gemacht? Uff statt auf? Dialects especially for us in the US are things we ought to know about. Before WW1, german and german dialects could be heard everywhere in the Midwest even in massive cities like St. Louis and Cincinnati. One day you’re gonna either realize that with the death of dialects, you loose way more than just some funny sounds. You loose a vital part of culture. Maybe you’re joking but for me as someone with relatives who’s lives were put in danger and who were laughed at and scorned for speaking german and French of Louisiana, the loss of a dialect and a language is the loss of the vital part that makes one person faceless in a sea of people. They are not just spoken by modern day Germans but by many of our own ancestors only a generation or two away.

Germany is probably the only country where the capital of the country has an accent very different from the Standart language of the country. Usually Standart for the language is formed around the dialect of the capital city.

This is because Germany became a nation as late as 1871. Before 1871 Gemany consisted of many duchies and kingdoms. Berlin became the capital of the Kingdom of Prussia as late as 1701. Simply spoken, before 1871 Germany was more or less a loose unity of states called the Holy Roman Empire. The Emperor of that Empire was elected and the capital of the Holy Roman Empire changed, Aachen, Frankfurt, Vienna, even Prague! Berlin is a young city. In the 14th century Berlin was a small unimportant village. Central Europes center was around Frankfurt, Cologne, Nuremburg, Worms, Mainz, Liege, Amsterdam,Brussels, Strasburg, Lubecca. Many cities in Germany are much older than Berlin. In the 16th century Cologne had 50,000 inhabitants, Nuremburg and Hamburg 40,000, Vienna 20,000, whilst Berlin had not even 10,000. Berlin and todays East of Germany lies in an area that was once left by Germanic tribes around 400 - 500. Around 600 CE Slavic tribes settled in Berlin (The name of Berlin derives from Slavic "berlo", which means "moor") . 600 years later in1200 Germans from the Lower Rhine area re-settled in the East of Germany and Berlin. The new settlement consisted of two parts, one called Cölln (= Cologne, because the new settlers came from the Lower Rhine around eh old City of Cologne) - the other part was called Berlin. 1307 both settlements were united and it became Berlin. A Standard German evolved in the 17th century on the basis of the German dialects in the South and the Middle of Gemany (but not Berlin!). The standard accent is an artificial one and it evolved no less than some 150 years ago. The accent of Standard German does not belong to any specific area

If you want to go to the 'capital of Standard German', visit Hanover. You will hardly hear any dialect there. :)

DumblyDouner Hanover? That is a fallacy! The view that people of Hanover speak "a good German" had emerged in the course of the 19th century. Hanover is situated in the Low German region and until the middle of the 20th century Hanover people generally spoke "Platt" like everywhere in North Germany. There is a nice anecdote: a Hanover market woman was asked: "Haben Sie Aale?" (Do you have eels?").The market woman answers "Nein, ich habe Zeit". (No, I have all the time!). She understood "Eile" = "Aale" = hurry in her dialect. She thought she was asked whether she was in a hurry and answered that she has time on her hands.Hanover people still have an accent which is similar as in Brunswick or Magdeburg. But they do not use "dat" and "watt" for "das" and "was". I can "smell" a Hanover speaker. Nowadays you will hardly find a dweller in the big cities of the North that speak a dialect. But you will find regionalisms, in Hanover, too. And in HAmburg you will find even more people who speak "a good German", with an accent though.

Above you will see a real dialect, which sounds like Dutch. There is no Berlin dialect. Berlin dialect is a High German variation and no dialect. The Berliners speak an informal High German.

"jewesen" (="gewesen") is not a different grammar. In Berlin every "g" is a "y" like in "yard". Garten = Yarten, yehen, yeseh'n. Berliners have an accent. That is all. It is no dialect. This is a real dialect with its own grammar, as it was spoken in Duisburg in the Ruhr area: "Et wor wahl nex los vandag en Dössere, bloß, dat Jann sinne Schwoger, en ricke on vornehme Hehr, ob Besük chekomme wor, so om de Koffiedrenktid. Dä wod no tuers enchelahe, en Köppke met tu drenke" Standard German: Es war wohl nichts los heute in Duissern, bloß, dass Jan seinen Schwager, einen reichen und vornehmen Herr zu Besuch gekommen war, so um die Kaffeezeit. Der wurde nun zuerst eingeladen eine Tasse mitzutrinken. In Berlin: Et war wohl nix los heute in Duissern, bloß, datt Jann seinn Schwarer, ein reichen un vornehmen Härr zu Besuch jekommen war, so umme Kaffezeit- Der wurde nu zuers eingeladen ne Tasse mitzutrinken.

Where would they add a jewesen?A Berliner says: "Da war'n richtisch viele feine Pinkel unterwegs jewesen". In sloppy High German: "Da war'n wirklich viele reiche Leute unterwegs gewesen". Completely normal sloppy Standard German.

And Heidi Klum is not a Berliner native. She comes from the west of Germany. "war gewesen" is "Plusquamperfekt" like "hatte gehabt", "war gelaufen" etc. A lot of Germans say "war gewesen" instead of "war" (Imperfekt). There isalso the double perfect: "ich habe das gesehen gehabt". Used all over in Germany, in Berlin and everywhere else where a Standard German dialect is spoken. (A German dialect however is something differerent from a "Standard German dialect". Berlin talk is a Standard German dialect. Other examples: the Ruhr). E.g., Bavarian is a German dialect, not a Standard German dialect...

The Berlin dialect is also more common among former East-Berlin Germans compared to former West-Berlin Germans.

yourTuBaer The modern State of Saxony has nothing to do with the historic Low-German speaking Saxons from the Northwest. Today's Saxons/Thuringians speak a dialect that is just an accent to standard German. Luthers bible translation is still extremely close to modern standard German if the long timespan is taken into account.

Also ich muss ehrlich sagen: mir kommt der Unterschied gar nicht so groß vor. Gibt es echt Leute, die uns nicht verstehen, wenn man stark Berlinert? Ick meene, man kann ja ditt meste herleiten oder ditt klingt fast jenauso, wie de typische deutsche Sprache. Ick glob da haste mit andern Dialekten mehr zu kämpfen. So jetzt bin ick aber schon uff bis in da puppen. Ick werde ma in de Federn spring und de Ogen zumachen.

this dialect is only in berlin. you can easily talk and work nearly everywhere in germany with standart german, but sometimes its even hard for me as nativ german to understand all dialects but i would say i still understand them but not so good no need to learn a dialect. :)

Loool if you actually are worried don’t be. I’ve studied german for 5 years now and spent 9 months in BW. Overtime you’ll get an ear for it but keep your mind open to the idea that what you hear in movies and such are not the only way these words are pronounced. Most of everyone speaks high german anyway

Watch a show called Berlin Berlin, and you'll get used to the dialect pretty quickly (two of the characters speak it throughout the show)! It surprised me how clear everything Emmanuel said in this video was, and I think that show was to thank even though I wasn't actively trying to pick it up.

Don't be. I was afraid too when I attended my first german classes. Now, 3 and a half years later, I have taken my international B1 german test and got my degree. Thanks to that,I've earned a 1 month full-paid scholarship to study german in Berlin, that was granted by mi institute. Heads up, take a deep breath and keep going. PS: I'm from Paraguay, South America. Spanish is my native language. Big hug to you!!

Gopal Gupta It‘s Hochdeutsch, e.g. in Nordrhein-Westfalen but not Ruhrpott-Deutsch which is also spoken in NRW.

As someone from the Netherlands, it's almost as if the Berlin one is speaking my language. There are way more similarities than with standard German, which could be because of many Dutch colonistst who settled in Berlin.

It’s because of the influence of the now almost extinct low German language which used to be as close to Dutch as it was to today’s standard German. Sadly that language got replaced by standard German over time, but that’s the reason why the northern German dialects sound a little closer to Dutch than the southern German dialects, which were never really replaced and survived to this day. If you search for “Plattdeutsch” you can hear the similarities yourself

Please do this with other dialects!! I live near Stuttgart and am learning Schwäbisch just by being here and I love it :D

Easy German How about Brigantendeutsch/Karlsruherisch. The dialekt is only spoken here and is high german francian dialekt. Or you could also just do francian dialekts.

Different yes but everyone is able to speak standard German and as soon they notice that you don't speak the dialect they automatically switch to standard German. Btw. The younger generations speak mostly standard German.

Super! Das war sehr interessant. ich glaube, dass der berline Dialikt gleich sowie der schottische Dialekt auf Englisch ist, zu sprechen.

Ask any Berliner to speak common German if you don’t understand them and most will do just that. Interesting!! Which parts are the most "sticky"? For me it's definitely "icke" as well as a general tendency to over-enunciate ... like... the vowel sounds would give me away, even if I tried to sound neutral

Two weeks is super short and children's books are for still books for a native speaker. Don't be too hard on yourself :). I usually need at least two months before I can start reading coherent things.

With how regularity are german dialects spoken?. I mean.. Would i be able to work and live a normal daily basis with standar german? Or should i be on my way to learn a dialect too?

this dialect is only in berlin. you can easily talk and work nearly everywhere in germany with standart german, but sometimes its even hard for me as nativ german to understand all dialects but i would say i sill understand them but not so good no need to learn a dialect. :)

CageKicker It‘s far more complicated than that as many German dialects have completely unique words. That said, when all else fails, we all switch to Hochdeutsch to understand each other. This will then have Dialektanklang for some, depending on where they are from, and that is what I would say can be compared to different accents in the USA. Dialect doesn’t equal accent. I’m German living in the US.

The Berliner way of talking is an informal kind of Standard German. Easy to learn and understand. It is not a dialect as such but an accent with special vocabulary that is easy to pick up. Bavarian is a real dialect that you would have to learn. Most Berliners speak Standard German with a Berlin accent. Dialects are dying out in Germany except for the South. This is mainly due to the fact that Standard German is based on the Southern dialects. E.g. Swiss German and Bavarian are real German dialects based on the Old High German whilst the northern and the western regions of Germany used to speak different West Germanic languages: Low German in the north and - in the west - Low Franconian (which is also the basis of Dutch). Dialects are nowadays only spoken at home, out in the street people speak Standard German, sometimes with their dialect accent or with a High German accent. By the way, Cari speaks Standard German with a Berlin accent as most people around Berlin do (the central area of the former GDR).

Evil Pagan Dead right! It is sometimes difficult to explain the difference between dialect and accent to an English-speaking person. German dialects do not only have diverse vocabularies but also different grammars.

Ich bin Berlinerin, wen ich so darüber nach denke spreche ich wirklich oft das G als J, das habe ich nicht wirklich mitbekommen. In der Grundschule hat ein Mitschüler mich mal darauf angesprochen weil ich mit meiner Lehrerin ein mal sehr stark berlinischen Dialekt gesprochen habe. Da habe ich erst mitbekommen das ich überhaupt ein Dialekt speche😂.

It's not out of the ordinary for people from the same country to not understand each other. My parents are both from the Philippines and they have different dialects cos they are from different regions. My dad can barely understand what my mom says when she speaks her dialect and vise versa. When they talk to each other, they either speak English or Tagalog. So it's not surprising that this the same in Germany except I don't think they have an international dialect/language everyone can understand.

Der Dialekt ist eigentlich relativ einfach zu lernen. Aber ich hab' da irgendwie nicht so viel Talent zu. Ich muss wahrscheinlich 3 Tage nur das hören, um selbst so zu sprechen 😂

Thiago Mlaker it is not Platt deutsch. It is a Standard German dialect. Berliners do not understand Platt. It has no similarity to Dutch.

I do speak dutch and German and no there is the dialect is not comparable with the Dutch language :) And "Icke or Ik is just easier to pronounce, the whole Berlin dialect is a very easy and laid back language , that's almost something informal

in school on the paper :D and some citys still speak standart german but not all. they even speak dialect in schools, but with standart german you should understand and talk to nearly everybody in germany because they know the standart german from writing you know even if they dont speak standart they should understand you

"Hochdeutsch" is an artificial language established in the 18th and 19th century. There are four big groups of different languages (not dialects!) that were spoken in Germany: Low German (once a Lingua Franca in North Europe that influenced Swedish and Danish) Low Franconian (the eastern area of the Dutch language: Cleves, Guelders, Wesel, Duisburg in the west of today's Rurh area). Middle German (in the middle of Germany) High German (spoken in the highlands of Germany, therefore "High" Standard German is based on South German (= High German) and Middle German. For example they said "Zeit" instead of the other languages in Germany: tid, tied, tijd. In Cleves they said "Soterdag" (Samstag = Saturday) and "helpe" instead of "helfen" (english to help, swedish hjälpa), ruupe (= swedish ropa, Standard German: rufen) etc.

Hm, weiß ich nicht. Ich bin halb "Berliner" halb "Bayer" aber kann nur Hochdeutsch sprechen. Und niemand den ich kenne spricht Dialekt, außer zum Spaß.

Dei meisten Dialekte sind ja auch schon ausgestorben. Das dialektreichste Bundesland war übrigens Nordrhein-Westfalen. Dort ist der Tod der Dialekte bereits weit fortgeschritten. In NRW gab es auch den interessantesten aller Dialekte: das "Deutsch-Niederländische" am Niederrhein. Man sprach es z. B. in Krefeld, Duisburg, Mülheim an der Ruhr, Oberhausen, Wesel, Xanten, Geldern, Moers, Düsseldorf, Heinsberg, Neuss, Mönchengladbach,.,Wuppertal und Kleve etc. Es bestand aus dem nördichen Kleverländischen und dem südlichen Limburgisch. Früher, so bis Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts, teilweise sogar noch bis zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt konnten sich die Menschen am Niederrhein mit den Menschen auf der niederländishcen Seite der Grenze mühelos unterhalten. Denn auch in Maastricht sprach man bzw. spricht man immer noch Limburgisch. Die Sprache am Niederrhein geht wie das Niederländische auf das Altniederfränkische zurück. Viele "holländischen" Siedler, die sich in der Berliner Gegend niederließen, kamen übrigens vom Niederrhein, das schon sehr früh zu Preußen gehörte. Für die Niederrheiner war Deutsch eine Fremdsprache, weshalb der Dialekt zu jenen gehört, der am frühesten ausstarb.

Berlin born & raised here. For everyone learning German and/or Berlinerisch,: Don't worry. As long as you try, no one will be mad at you. You might get cute little chuckles, but as long as you try to speak german, we are more than happy. And very keen to mention how wrong you where :P

Okay, Berlin dialect is just some dude mocking Standard German.

Very nice extra content here. I think for most learners this is interesting to know and important to be aware of (that there are dialects besides Hochdeutsch). But they should also know that this is in reality little to no necessary to learn in order to communicate. It's fun. But you don't have to understand it.

Vor vielen Jahren begann ich, Hindi zu lernen. Sie hat weit mehr Dialekte als die deutsche. Es war nicht möglich, wenige Dialekte zu lernen. Sehr schwer, Zeit und Motivation zu finden, um mehr Dialekte zu lernen. Also beherrschte ich nur Standard Hindi. Nichts übertrifft jedoch den Schwierigkeitsgrad des Sanskrit. Kein Wunder, dass viele talentierte Deutsche diese großartige Sprache lernen.😇 Nicht viele einheimische Deutsche sind sich der alten Wurzeln bewusst, die aus der Sanskrit-Sprache abgeleitet oder entlehnt sind. Das ist wirklich sehr bedauerlich!

Exciting that Berlin has a dialect! Ein susser Dialekt. Ich mag Emanuel. Ich habe immer davon geträumt, in Berlin zu leben. I've grown up around the S.F. bay area where it's been a constant erosion of local culture through rapid commercialization and gentrification, so I schmunzel at people being able to preserve anything!🙀
