There is nothing wrong with protesting, we cannot forget that part. It’s a great American right to be able to disagree and dissent. However violence is unacceptable unless it is in defense from a physical attack. We have to be consistent in our values or else we are no better than those we oppose. That’s the great thing about America, you can stand up and say I hate this policy or I think this person is terrible and it’s legal to do so, unlike true fascist regimes throughout history. That being said, the masks are a big no-no. I’m very upfront about this with everyone; I used to be one of these guys, not antifa specifically, but a leftist that destroyed property and protested because I hated Bush (43) and thought his administration was corrupt and leading us into unjust wars, and to some degree I still believe that. As I grew older, had kids, read more than the required reading from college, and stopped listening to only NPR and MSNBC, I saw the world differently. I went to rehab, got cleaned up, reaffirmed my faith in God and now I can’t stand what I once stood for and what I opposed. I say all of that to say this; we never wore masks, at least not in my specific circle of “friends.” Why? Because we were proud of what we were doing. We weren’t scared of people knowing who we were. Hell, we wanted them to know who we were. To know that everyday people disagreed. I look back in embarrassment, not at my views, because I was young, dumb, and impressionable and there were those older people who should have known better and should have guided us to peacefully protest. I look back at our methods and see these kids making the same mistakes while compounding it with hiding behind anonymity. Masks are illegal in most businesses and public places for good reason. Only certain people wore bandannas over their face throughout history; the cowards who were afraid of the consequences of their actions. But let us not ever forget that these children are brainwashed by society and a corrupt education system. These kids are being pushed into an ideology that they don’t understand and can’t fathom the effects of, were it to be implemented. I’m in no way, shape or form excusing the actions of violent rioters. Prosecute them and hold them accountable for their actions. I am saying, I was one of these guys years ago and I used to be ashamed of America and it’s history. If I can see the error of my ways, there’s hope that they can too. Let’s not forget that in our anger. We have to be consistent in our criticisms and never try to shut down opposition, only the violence that the so-called leaders wish for their “grunts” to enact.

You can protest the protest on another day, but so far counter protests have effectively become attacks on the free speech and safety of protests.
