Berimbau solo
Музыка
Just messing around with the berimbau while testing out our new camera.
My berimbaus are modified in several ways. The"bass drum" is the gourd of the berimbau thumping against my chest. Other than that, we've added tuning mechanisms and some ways to amplify the instruments.
On the couch in the background is a bamboo rainstick that was taken out because, sadly, it needs fixing.
3/21/13 Finally made that follow up video for which I'd been asked by someone patient. A bit different, hope you'll enjoy.

🤣🤣🤣 Yeah dude I was all about that video until I saw how it's actually played and now I cringe every time! 🤣 Love me some Rob Scallon but that shit ain't berimbau.
I've been a capoeirista for about a year now... I can do an S dobrado backflip landing in a face kick, but can still barely maintain a beat for traditional Angoles songs. Cudos, mate, that's some seriously impressive stuff.

Coisa mais linda de instrumento
@thethirteenthraven: The amplification is something I've been working on for a while. The long and short of it is that I have an inexpensive lavaliere mic inside the gourd as well as a piezzo pick-up, mounted to a metal saddle (with leather on the inside, to dampen the metallic ring). These run into a small mixer and blended there. I add a bit of EQ to bring out the gourd thump (the bass drum sound) and compression to even the thump with the string sound. It's a miracle it doesn't explode.

Hey, i really love that track!! I have a question and i know that it is a lomg time ago but could play the same pattern on the berimbau without the rattle but only with the stick and make another video? I would really love to use it to make a beat for my work in school.
This literally sent me back 12 years, back to when I met a good friend of mine for the first time. My first ever time trying Capoeira:) Thanks for the memory lane trip on a Sunday Morning sir:)
Very impressive ! I didn’t know it was possible to produce so much different sound with this instrument
That reverb is amazing.

Nathan Prescott You are right!
@cobaiatemorozo yeah!! Did you know the musical bow is not just from Brazil though? It's the oldest and most common string instrument on the planet. Just about every place that ever used a bow and arrow (short bow, long bow, etc) also made music with it. That said, I did learn to build in Brazil. These ones were built in Salvador. I got my start through Capoeira...
Muito bom!!! É um berimbau de respeito. Grande som...
Трансформация)) музыка уносит просто космос)) буду на поле тренироваться в тумане))
Cara!mano desde quando ouvi o som do berimbau,eu imaginava um som elétrico, gostei que venha mais.
This is definitely the most beautiful song I've heard played on this instrument yet.
Absolutely phenomenal!!!

Hey, just wanted to thank you guys for the great comments. Who knew! This video was almost an after-thought. Anyway, much appreciated. Cheers! Been meaning to post a follow up (I think I promised that to someone) and will...just been so busy...like all of us
Ficou muito bom, parabéns.

Dude, that rocked. You're the bomb!
Funkayyy!! I like the percussive effect with the gourd. Nice technique.
Exelente Maestro !!!
Amazing piece, cheers from Brasil!
@JustAluno Gourd is just a medio. I do tune it low, though. I and a luthier created our own tuning system, and have been experimenting with different ways to get the instrument lower. Man, I could really use the capoiera world! That's where I got my start but it's been a long time since I've played. Axe!
This is amazing.
by far the best on youtube

Diferente! Muito criativo! Parabéns!
@MrJDFrog No, haven't got anything online about this. We're using a bass tuner mounted on an additional piece of wood and an ebony cap with a wire groove. I think you can see this up top. The most difficult thing about fashioning this is that luthiers' tools are generally designed to work with things are that flat or round whereas the biriba wood is neither, and each piece is different. So creating a vice that will allow one to work on it is half the story! Thanks for yer kind words, Good luck!
Holy crap man, what a flex! 🤯💪💯

This is awesome! We are reading the book Out of Many Waters and it mentions this instrument. There is a Wiki for it but it is much easier to get a sense of what it is, how it sounds, and how it's played when you can actually see it being done! Thanks!!!

+Brittney Clay Cheers, Brittney. Here's a link to a great article: www.nscottrobinson.com/berimbau.php My playing in this video is actually quite un-traditional in many ways because of the way the instrument is tuned and amplified. Check out Nana Vasconsuelos, or Ramiro Musotto for some more inspiration
Very very awesome!

@001Tara1 yes, nowadays the arame is from the inside of a car tire. You can also use piano wire but it doesn't sound quite the same. Tire wire is difficult to get out of the tire - it takes a lot of work with a knife. You can get old tires at a junk yard, or just find them on the side of the road somewhere. Or your neighbor's driveway. Don't tell them I said this.
Strangest morning ever, you rock dear:) This melody inside is beautiful, I hope you are doing well :)
