ATTENTION: The SL55 AMG has 2(!) oil draining plugs. If you forget to open both, at least 2 liters of old oil stay in the engine. Its NOT mentioned in this video.

If you pour new oil into oil filter housing before you reinstall the oil filter you don't need to use funnel. I had been doing that way for years.

On an AMG engine there is also an engine oil cooler that needs to be drained to, in there there is also around 1 liter of oil remaining, also the O-ring needs to be removed en mount a new one also, it's a small tip, other wise there is still remaining a liter of oil in the engine, still a good video!! Congrats

There is actually a second drain plug on the bottom of the engine that needs to be drained. Other than that, thanks for sharing.

@Benzwerks, Thank you for your reply, it’s very helpful, yes I was told about Mercedes adding the dip stick plug and making people go to the dealers. Once again thanks for the help.

I may take longer for the oil go through the front timing cover if you pour it in the oil filter housing, but when you finish pouring 8-9 quarts of oil most of it is in the oil pan, you also need a minute or so to reinstall the oil filter cap. When you finish reinstall the oil filter cap, all the oil is in the oil pan.

No, there are 2 areas that need to be drained, and extracting from the top will not remove one of them, leaving 1-2qts of old oil in the engine still. You MUST drain the oil from these engines.

Not to be too critical or anything, but I never lay a tool atop the engine, and I also would not "pound" the oil filter cap wrench onto the cap.

That has to be the most accessible oil filter I've ever seen.

I am curious as to why you did not use an oil evacuator/pump instead. Is it not recommended on this model or do you prefer draining the oil from underneath? I thought that Mercedes dealerships use evacuators. Thanks

I watched your video how to change oil and sl55

@Samuel Henson the dual sump is particular to this application. Second a lot of ignorant comments below. The second plug is located adjacent the main plug. Third you cannot vacuum evacuate the oil as you will not remove all the oil entirely, though the dealer does it all the time ;)

can the oil be sucked out from the dipstick hole, like many dealerships do on other models?

Why make a video if you don't have knowledge of Mercedes!!!

This was helpful, however I am using a vacuum pump to pull the oil from the engine.

I keep seeing people commenting in other places that there are (2) Drain Plugs for the R230 SL55 AMG. I did not see it in this video?
