Thank you, Baylissa!!! I've listened to this four times in the past 24 hours, and I'm going to keep listening to it over and over until I incorporate all of the wisdom you imparted to those of us suffering from withdrawal. It has helped me sleep! Huge, huge win, just listening to your voice and your hope and your confidence that we can heal, calmed down my nervous system enough for me to fall asleep and not wake up minutes later in panic. Thank you!! I know it's going to be hard, but I believe in my ability to manage this better.

But... I have more hope now than ever, and I'm seeing signs of healing all the time. Still expecting the journey to last quite a while, but not afraid of it like I have been up until just a month ago. I'm able to live my life about 60% capacity right now. I'll take it! @@lalouloune6156 I used a water taper…it took me 13 months to taper off of 1 mg of Ativan. Once I got down to .25 mg, I slowed my taper way down because my symptoms were ramping up. Sometimes, I would hold for a week or so until the symptoms settled down. I was symptomatic through the entire taper…your body will tell you when you need to slow down or hold as you near the end. I was at .01 mg when I jumped…my symptoms didn’t get worse once I jumped….they have just continued for now. I still have tinnitus, my heart palpitations are slowly going away, but my stomach issues have actually worsened in the last month. I have severe acid reflux, bloating, and side pain…benzo belly. I’ve read that some people suffer from it a year or longer and some don’t have it at all. I have been functioning ok during the taper and since I’ve finished but not without my share of symptoms. Just take your time on the taper and you will be ok…you’ve come this far, just keep going and hold on your dose if you need to. You can do this!! 🙂

I Baylissa during the very worst part of my 3 year plus taper that included a failed cross over to Valium at the beginning of it so I had to restart my taper after months of abject suffering. I had mostly mental symptoms and I told Baylissa I had no idea how I would make it and I remember telling her that “I will never get off these drugs” which is not like me because I am stubborn but withdrawal tested me in every way to which she replied “you will finish your taper.” Baylissa was not only right but I began to feel better during my taper which was a gift for me given how rough it was in the beginning. It turns out that I was someone who experienced acute withdrawal during the first part of my taper as did my tapering buddy who was about one year and a half ahead of me and mentored me through my taper. My patient led taper protocol was simple and my mantra was much like Baylissa’s “don’t obsess” and I dry cut all the way down until it was a crumb. I never cut until I recovered from the previous reduction in dose which meant I held my dose for longer for several weeks a couple times, but I had to remain functional because I had 1 to 2 teenagers in my home at that time. The benefit of doing a patient led taper was, for me, feeling much better the lower I got and by the time I took my final doses, I had no symptoms from cutting so I “jumped,” which was very anticlimactic because it turns out that I recovered about 60% during my taper. I use the term “recover” because I have religion trauma from my childhood and the term “heal” triggers me. I experienced no new benzodiazepine withdrawal induced symptoms since I was in my taper.

My question is: my son was taking 30mg daily in morning for Anxiety. After I fired the Psychiatrist 18 months ago the new Psychiatrist started tapering him off slowly now he is on 3mg Valiums daily. He has no problems but at times upon waking up he starts his episode of hollering, crying, profanity, usually it last 50min, however when he takes his Ginger root (2 dropperfuls) liquid extract he may calm down in seconds to several minutes. The psychiatrist expects to cut him down to 2 mg soon , I asked if she knows anything about taking the water with the Valiums that are in crumbs, but she doesn’t know. What % of Valiums would you reduce to when your on 3mg? Every 2 months she reduces something. Thank you

Do you think someone who is 70 years old should also continue trying to taper off benzos? I’ve been tapering off 2 benzos, first K, then V (which was a crossover from x). It took me 3 yrs to get off the K because I had to hold for about 19 mos due to a death in family. Then when I was going to taper off V, the pandemic came & I had to hold because I have debilitating health anxiety since the previous taper off K. Anyway, now I’m tapering off 3 ml V, and the symptoms are often terrifying and debilitating. My life is really horrible and I’ve lost so much. At age 70, would you still suggest continuing to taper off?
