Born in St.Joseph hospital, raised in Hartford... Every time I go back down. Every time I watch a video of how everything looks now. It hurts. I left before I turned 10, but in my 20's with a family so still remember everything about my childhood that made me who I am and my life so great. The way life was for me there and then, people don't get to see or experience anymore.

If it's the same Mr. Cole, I had him for 6th grade Fairplain Northwest. He would grab kids acting up and shake them, we called him Mr Shake n Bake.

Glad to see someone else say the same thing... I'm in my mid 20's and even I remember this place use to have so much life. That whole side of the state has gone down hill, far and fast. It is truly heart breaking to me.

IF you freeze the video at 4:06, notice the older red brick building on the right... (just beyond the old 5th wheel cafe that has the FOOD sign..) That building is set only a few feet from the street right of way... way to close from code stand-point... and that is because it was known in the late 1880's thru 1940 the old Preston Lumber Company... (which was perhaps the first real commercial enterprise of the area... est. 1833) (Old men Prestons'... Wallace and Arthur Sr. simply told the city that they would put the building up as they deemed proper... and forget your zoning laws... and that is what they did!!) All the other buildings are set back about 10 feet farther... Also, there used to be a small canal that went behind those buildings... so lumber and other things could be delivered up river.....

Interesting. Thanks for sharing that. I actually have a yard stick with advertising Preston Lumber B.H. MI on it It also has phone number Ph.5-1113 not sure of the year. Also about the Canal, yes I remember hearing of that.

@@drivingdon3292 That yard stick is probably made of maple...you should save it... The Preston Lumber co.. began about 1833... started by Fowler Preston, who was also the first Berrien County Sherriff... the main business at first was cutting and making cedar shingles which were floated down from Coloma area on the Paw Paw river...

Unless you were there years ago, you have no idea what this area was like back then... 30 years ago it was beautiful with full of wonderful people and life. You have no idea. This is sad to see as native from the area. Know the history of the country and it's places man. So much more to the story.
