Bensersiel: Bookmapping The Riddle of The Sands
I've had one of those magical moments where you take a work of fiction out into the wilds and it takes you to the exact spot being described in the story. See riddleofthesands.pbworks.com/2...
No sign of nefarious barge making though; and I wonder if there really were any signs of that. There are no old buildings here that might have been timber mills or yards. Just fields.
So was Erskine using his journalistic licence here? Describe the landscape and the geography with absolute precision and then add a little bit of fiction about a German invasion. In 1903 readers took this book to be a legitimate warning sign & evidence of German warmongering. But maybe Childers was merely stoking the home fires as 'twere.

Anyone who has read this great book would love to trace the steps of Davies and Carruthers, and you have! Well done and thanks.
What a wonderful surprise to find your videos. Love the book and read it every Fall. Thank you.
Just finished the book. Awesome project! Thanks for doing this! Certainly brings things to life.
Thanks for the views. When I last read the book, a couple of years back, I tracked the novel using Google Earth. It is quite easy to do as Childers quite clearly followed an actual route himself and of course the book also has a map. So it is really good to see some video of how it looks today. Childers unfortunately was shot as a traitor of the Irish rebellion some years later. How ironic.

Yet his advocacy for forgiveness created the legend that helped end the civil war, and pushed his son into the Irish Presidency
I wonder why Childers mentions Munich beer? The East Frisians are very proud of their very bitter local brew - e.g. Jever Pils, which is only brewed about 10 km away.
