Bennington PA 08.14.15: You'll Hike For The Entire Rock, But You'll Only Need The Edge

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Out of one curve, into another.
As go the trains snaking their way over the mountain, so went our traveling party as we left Horseshoe and twisted and turned our way up the back roads to Bennington Curve. The evening rush was approaching, and the rock outcropping perched above track 3 at 'Benny' would be our box seats to the show.
We took our places with time to spare as 23M stormed upgrade at 5:17 behind C44-9W 9788 and SD70M 2606. Unfortunately, it seemed like we arrived right before intermission - the westbound stacker was our only train for nearly an hour. At 6:14, our patience was rewarded when ES44AC 8093 and SD70ACe 1174 slogged through the curve with empty oil train 67W, missing a nose-to-nose meet with eastbound coal drag 534 by only a few car lengths. The din of the parading oil tanks was compounded by the droning dynamic brakes of SD60Is 6730 and 6734 and the squealing protests of the loaded coal hoppers. The unassisted tail of 67W met the very-much-assisted tail of 534 at the point where the infamous 'Slide' brings track 1 back to the same level as tracks 2 and 3. SD40Es 6315, 6308, 6329, and 6323 provided ample braking muscle to keep the speed of the drag in check as it descended towards Altoona.
We didn't have as long to wait as before once 534 was out of sight. At 6:25, SD40Es 6322 and 6328 ran light westbound up track 3, followed 13 minutes later by Amtrak's westbound Pennsylvanian behind P42 194. As the Pennsylvanian rounded the curve towards the tunnels, it was met by eastbound manifest 16N negotiating the Slide on track 1. SD40E helpers 6320 and 6332 lent their braking power to C40-8W 8349 and C40-9 8765 on the head end, while SD40Es 6319 and 6304 brought up the rear. Eleven minutes later, we ended our visit on a quieter note as SD40Es 6333 and 6312 ran light westbound, blowing a quick salute as they passed at our feet. With the shadows closing in, it was time to run west ourselves. As go the trains...

    The inside of Bennington Curve is railroad property, as is the access road leading there. The outside of the curve, however, is state game lands, and the road there is open not only for hunting access but also for the cemetery that is the most visible remnant of the abandoned town of Bennington. The clearing overlooking the curve is accessible via a short hike through the woods after driving past the cemetery parking to the game lands gate. The access road is extremely bumpy and rutted and a section is simply driving on the ballast next to track 3, so AWD/4WD in something with an elevated ride height is highly recommended.

    I live about 2 hrs 15 minutes from Horseshoe Curve, I'm actually close-ish to Enola Yard. I am a history major, and visited Horseshoe Curve to later find out about the wreck of the Red Arrow which fascinates me. I bought the book at the Curve's gift shop and attempted to venture to Bennington Curve, in my 2009 Nissan Versa on April 30, 2018. Big mistake. I wish I'd ould have watched your video and read the comments first!! I'm glad to see it in video, because the access road was terrifying in my little Versa. She survived, but there were many scary clunks and thuds... did you park at the Cemetary? The cemetary was all the further I got, but I thought it said no vehicles after that point. I know you mentioned the hike. I thought about hiking, but I was so shaken after the drive in, I was terrified if I shut off my car, I wouldn't get it to turn on and I'd be stuck at the cemetary... I was hoping to see a historical marker, but I guess there isn't one?

  • @FastFlyingVirginian

    @FastFlyingVirginian

    6 жыл бұрын

    The 'No Vehicles Beyond This Point' gate is further up the dirt road that breaks off to the left after you reach the cemetary parking. That's where I typically park (I drive a Subaru Forester). There isn't a historical marker for the curve itself, but I believe there is one for the cemetary once you climb the stairs to get there. I made 3 unsuccessful attempts to find the curve before I finally got there - I recalled seeing photos from the '70s of people driving vans and 4x4s back to the cliff's edge, and as we hiked back on that first successful trip we came across a long clearing through the trees that looked big enough to drive vehicles through with the remnants of a fire pit at the other end, and from there we could see the path down to the rock outcropping. It's grown up a little since the '70s obviously, but someone thought enough to tie a colored plastic strip to one of the trees to mark the point where you turn right and head through the trees to reach the outcropping. If you think the access road is terrifying in the dry, you should try it in the snow sometime: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Yq2f2rSKpMfLnMY.html

    Is the place pretty packed on weekends? Enough spot on the rock? I have been meaning to go down for a while now. Do you drive close to Bennington cemetery?

  • @FastFlyingVirginian

    @FastFlyingVirginian

    8 жыл бұрын

    You can actually use the same parking area as the Bennington cemetery, or you can drive up the hill a little further to the gate into the game lands. We have fit as many as 5-6 people onto the rock before when I've been there with a group in August, you just don't want to horse around near the edge in such a situation. ;) The ledge going off to the left is a decent view of the curve as well, so there's plenty of room.

    Thank you. The actual drive down to the cemetery, is it true that you have to drive very close to the tracks?

  • @FastFlyingVirginian

    @FastFlyingVirginian

    7 жыл бұрын

    Yes. Once you come out of the woods at track level, you are driving on the ballast right next to track 3. The story I've heard is that NS tried to keep the gate closed, but 'reached an understanding' with the borough of Tunnelhill (i.e., the borough complained about them blocking gameland and cemetery access), so it stays open. It goes without saying you have to be careful.

    @@paulmatulavich7321 You can actually go a bit further up the road and park at the gate to the gamelands. Saves a little walking and the car will be in the shade. The cemetery is worth a visit as well, you'll pass a staircase leading to it before you get to the area marked as cemetery parking.

  • @FastFlyingVirginian

    @FastFlyingVirginian

    4 жыл бұрын

    You'll follow the tire tracks back beyond the gate until they end, then hang a right through a clearing in the trees until you come up to an old firepit (it used to be a camping spot back in the '70s). The path from there down to the rock outcropping is rather steep, and the outcropping itself is fairly small, but you could fit a small chair and a tripod out there if you were alone or didn't have that many people with you.

    NIce video As I don't live in the US, I have to ask if this is recorded at the famous Horseshoe Curve? In any case a good place for railspotting. I like the second scene, where you first see the tank car train (for oil?) followed by the coal train in the opposite direction. Looking at the last one, I was thinking the train was very heavy, but finally you see the 4 helpers pushing. Have a nice Easter Cheers Adam /DK

    With all of the brush and trees lining the curve, it's hard to imagine what exactly happened when the Red Arrow wrecked here in 1947.

  • @FastFlyingVirginian

    @FastFlyingVirginian

    7 жыл бұрын

    Bear in mind that 59 years ago, the brush and trees would not have been nearly as thick or may not have even existed along the outside of the curve. The views I've seen of Horseshoe Curve in that era showed virtually no foliage because the quantity of ash from passing steam locomotives prevented much from growing. The Red Arrow had nothing to stop it from plowing across the tracks and down the ravine on the outside of the curve.
