@@WolfMates I've just recently had a test ride on the Benelli Trk 502. Below 4,000 the engine was a little buzzy. Above 7,000 the engine became progressively more harsh in vibration to the point where you wouldn't want to sustain speeds upwards of 130 kph or 80 mph. The sweet spot seems to lie from 4,000 up to the torque peak of 6,000. Your revised gearing would allow the engine to sit where it is smoothest & most comfortable. This engine seems to be tuned for mid range torque, not peak power. It is obviously restricted at the top, & I believe the excessive vibration above 7,000 comes from an artificially lean air/fuel mixture to restrict peak power for the A2 licence regs. It has a 360° crankshaft, both pistons rising & falling together, & has a balance shaft to even things out. So it shouldn't vibrate at high rpm from a mechanical perspective. This makes me think that the vibration comes from lean combustion.

  • @WolfMates

@@hiyadroogs excelent explanation :) Yes the engine loves to be from 4 to 6k rpm :) I though 360º engines were vibration prone at high rpm even with a balance shaft :) Lately ive been feeling alot more vibrations at 4k to 4.5k I found out some worn o-rings on the exhaust, lets hope its just that ;) Cheers mate!

Someone in another video said this: "I would to add a note of caution here. Before you do this, check which version of this bike you have. A TRK 502X has a 14/ 44 front / rear sprocket combination. A TRK 502 (NON X) has a 14 / 42 front / rear sprocket combination. You will REALLY struggle to get under way from a dead stop with a 15 / 42 combination on the TRK 502 Non X version of this bike as it is simply too tall for the engine. The engine doesn't have enough torque to pull the bike away from a stop line on a hill for example. Plus the 15 tooth upgrade is only ok on the X version, "IF" you don't load your bike up with a fully loaded set of panniers, top box and a pillion. I have a TRK 502 NON X version with a lot of luggage to carry. I'm having to fit a 14 / 44 set up as the original 14/ 42 sprocket set up made the bike useless if not almost dangerously slow on acceleration to ride on anything that wasn't a "Motorway." So the 15 tooth sprocket is only any good if you don't have Lots of weight on." What do you think about this comment? As I have a TRK 502 (non X) and would like to reduce the rpm in general and increase the torque a little. Thank you

I have just fitted 15t front and 40t rear and new chain. Was £100 on Ebay. It feels like a bigger cc bike. I like it as it dropped the revs quite a bit. Maybe lacking a bit of low grunt now, but much better on the A roads and motorways.

Hi Lonewolf, I have a question regarding the ODO reading. Did it not affect the reading when you change sprockets? As I have known that my Crf250L, odometer needs to be corrected with a device, if you install sprockets and tires not of specs.

  • @WolfMates

Good morning :) Its a very good question, all sprocket modifications change a little percentage, it also depends on the speedometer location (the TRK is read on the rear ABS sensor, I think the CRF is on the front wheel). I my case I didnt noticed much diference, the TRK has already a big error (6-7kph) so with the sprocket change maybe 8kph error now, roughly measuring with GPS :) Thanks alot for watching and commenting :) Take care :)

@@WolfMates thanks for your quick reply. Ride safe. I also own a TRK502x and I felt that it is over revving because of the low gears. I am planning to replace the rear sprocket as you recommended. I hope I will still be able to use the stock chains. 1 tooth up in the front is equal to 3 Teeth down on the rear, more or less.

@@DNOYPIANGLER Yaps that's it :) You probably can keep the chain. If the chain lenght "scale" is near the front of the bike you can change the rear sprocket, or if the scale is to the back of the bike in alternative you can change 1 teeth on the front sprocket :) Many friends with TRK "X" have change the front to 15teeth (equivalent to rear 41 like you said) and they love it. I think the stock gearing is more for offroading... ;)

Thanks Jack :) At the time of this video i was using 14/39 that is roughly equivalent to 15/42 (just a bit even longer) and the top speed only increases while downhill. What improves is fuel economy on the highway at higher speeds like 120kph since it lower RPMs by 500rpms. The 15/42 also lower the acceleration by 5% but it only is much noticeble if you ride with pillion or lots of luggage. Cheers!

Some mates with TRK X chance the front sprocket to 15 teeth (thats more or less equivalent to 41 teeth rear sprocket) so im think in doing the same ;) The 44 teeth is thinking about offroad abilities ;) Cheers thanks for watching ;)

yeah but then the 500cc 48hp engine would not have enough power for the 235kg :) Thats why i changed to 39 teeth but i lost 7% torque... on a heavy bike :) atm 100kph is below 5 that is the maximum torque rpm ;) Cheers mate thanks for watching!

@@WolfMates yes i agree, but it would enable low revs at cruising speed even if it couldn't reach current max speed in top gear

@@sasham4073 yap i also like to cruise at low revs :) well in teory you could try to drop the gearing even fruther hehe :)

Thank you

i don't know.. sounds like exaggeration. ideally, the gears ratio relative to each other should be different so to achieve low revs in tops gear and still have strong first gear, but failing that, playing with sprockets is the only option

Don’t understand why all you guys have to do the efforts of changing out the sprockets just to see the amount of speed/rpm change. Much easier to do the math. If, at a certain speed, for example 80kmph, a 14T front sprocket results in 4000rpm, then a 15T front sprocket, at the same speed, will result in 4000/15x14=3733rpm, or at the same rpm, the speed will increase to 80/14x15=85.7kmph.
