I think it’s very weird that people in the comments equate Margaret not giving up the title to marry Peter to “not loving him enough to give up luxury ” We forget that even royals are humans and sacrifice certain things not for themselves but for others. Has it not occurred to someone that maybe she could really live without the title, money and luxuries but not without her family? Maybe she didn’t want to break her promise to her father whom she loved so dearly? If she had married Townsend she’d have to leave her family forever, live in a foreign country for several years with no the certainty of return to her homeland. She’d be all alone. Like her uncle David(Edward) she to would be said to have turned her back on her homeland and the monarchy for something like live? She too would be remembered as a coward ? Let’s not forget what hardships Townsend would go through had they got married that way. It’s easy to say she was “allowed” to marry under certain conditions but let’s not forget what those extreme conditions were especially to someone who is a born royalty. Those conditions were equal to not letting her ever marry in the first place. That imposed decision of not letting her marry changed the course of Margaret’s life forever whether positive or negative. The greater tragedy is that the Queen allowed her own son and grandson to marry a divorcee after years. At that point suddenly the church and parliament were no longer hurdles. It’s easy to say that times were different then but truth be told the winds of change had already started from Margaret’s time. The Queen just didn’t grab them for her.

While I completely agree with what you’re saying about Margaret shouldn’t have to give up her title for love and lose her family in the process, it should also be noted that David was a weak nazi supporter. Dear I say, they downplayed it on The Crown. I encourage you to look into his younger brother who passed away in a plane crash, they lived together for years and were very close.

I have always thought it odd that, when Elizabeth, born in 1926, was 13, she was introduced to Phillip, then 18/19. That would have been 1939. As heir presumptive, it was imperative that Elizabeth marry and produce heirs. In the aftermath of a decimated male population from WW II (ER II married in 1947) it would make sense to foment a romance with someone to whom Elizabeth was attracted and then ensure that person was as protected as possible from possible injury or death in battle (and make no mistake, Phillip, as Mountbatten's protege, was protected). In any case, Margaret, 9 when Elizabeth is introduced to Phillip at 13, is not treated with the same care for her future. Margaret waa ignored by her parents as "the baby" of the family. When she became attracted to Peter Townsend, it was downplayed as a cute crush. Not allowed to marry a divorced man, Margaret is played over the promise of a marriage when she turns 25, then told marriage with him would only be possible if she gives up her royal privileges and money.

I can’t understand the attitude everyone seems to have when a member of the royal family complains about something. I understand that it is a privilege to be royal, but has anyone realized that it is also a privilege to not be? We are allowed to marry whomever we choose, go anywhere we choose, and ultimately live our lives the way we want. That is absolutely a privilege that I have no doubt certain members of the royal family envy. These aren’t celebrities wanting to be famous and then complaining about being famous. These are real people who happened to be born into this role. I absolutely have sympathy for members like Margaret who surely would have lived a much happier life as a normal person.

Princess Margaret Rose Countess of Snowdon, CI, GCVO, CD (Margaret Rose; 21 August 1930 - 9 February 2002) was the younger daughter of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, and the only sibling of Queen Elizabeth II. She spent much of her childhood with her parents and sister. Her life changed dramatically at the age of six, when her paternal uncle, King Edward VIII, abdicated to marry divorcée Wallis Simpson. Margaret's father became king, and her sister became heir presumptive, with Margaret second in line to the throne. During the Second World War, the two sisters stayed at Windsor Castle despite suggestions to evacuate them to Canada. During the war years, Margaret was considered too young to perform any official duties and instead continued her education.

A little pronunciation mistake for "Les Jolies Eaux", it is "Lay-Jolee-Zo" rather than "Lay-Jolee-O". As you can see, the s at the end of "jolies" is carried over to produce the "z" sound linked to "eau", because "eau" starts with a vowel! This happens a lot in French.
