Ice is actually less dense than water, which is why ice floats on top of water. It also explains why water expands in when frozen, which is why pipes burst in the winter.

Earth bending spirituality is often overlooked. It's not just about neutral Jing, but connectedness. When we see Toph in the swamp in Korra she can commune with the earth itself by touching a banyan tree which let's her see what's going on at any location of the earth. Even though she's living as a hermit she's still connected to everyone and everything important to her. This is also a nice inversion from airbending which focuses on detachment from the world, which is why their sub bending of astral projection let's them detach themselves from their bodies.

Energy bending can theoretically be linked to all the bending styles via their sub techniques like healing, Astral projection, seismic sense and lighting bending (which is creating by manipulating yin and yang chi). Air benders can control the temperature of the air around them. That's why Aang didn't need winter clothes in the artic whilst the native residents of the artic absolutely did. these animals/the moon existed way before the time humans got bending from the lion turtles. When Wan closed the spirit portals the Lion Turtles stopped giving the bending ability to humans but those who already had it kept it for themselves, which later passed the ability down to others. fast forward a few centuries or milenias, this part of history was forgotten and only existed in legends and archives that very few even know exist, like those on the spirit library. those that have bending inherently by those long past ancestors learned how to use their tecnique observing the animals that could also bend. but these animals CANT give the bending ability. THIS is the main thing people misinterpret when this story is told in Korra and think it recons Tophs story with the badger-moles and others, it does not. Toph was always an earthbender, the badger-moles taught her how to use it and their method worked specially well for her because like them she was blind. the story of Oma and Shu was similar, they were both born earthbenders but only discovered/only really learned anything other than super basic things with the badger-moles, and likely there were other benders but they were likely mostly just like the explorers we saw in Wans story when they just got the bending from the turtles, they had nearly to no tecnique with their bending, they couldnt do much besides just launching their element forward.

I love your videos! Here is something I noticed that you and a lot of other people do when explaining the 4 bending styles and all of the specialized offshoot bending styles, so often you all forget to incorporate and expound upon the wisdom of Uncle Iroh himself about the very nature of the 4 elements. While teaching Zuko how to redirect lightning, Iroh draws the symbols of the 4 great nations into the sand and he explains the very nature of each element. Air is the element of freedom, Water is the element of change, Earth is the element of substance, and Fire is the element of power. So when describing airbending, you should keep in mind the element of freedom. Everyone talks about how defensive airbending is and how its mostly used for evasion, and you yourself said that it makes sense because its mostly used by monks who are peaceful by nature. Air is the element of freedom though, so it only makes sense that users of airbending have a defensive and deflective nature rather than an offensive nature to them so that they can protect themselves and their own freedoms while also trying their best to not impose themselves onto other people. The idea of freedom is also represented by the sub-bending styles of air: Levitation, and Astral Projection. Levitation allows you to fly freely and basically ignore gravity, which is one of the truest expressions of freedom I've ever heard of. Astral Projection allows you to leave your own body in spirit and go wherever you want to, another expression of the freedom that airbending represents. Water is the element of change, its sub-bending styles are ice and healing. Changing water into ice and also changing it back into water matches the theme of change pretty well. Healing can be construed as changing damaged/injured body parts into more whole and uninjured body parts. Earth is the element of substance. Iroh says the the people of the earth kingdom are diverse and strong, and that they are persistent and enduring. Out of all the elements, earth is the only solid one. The others are all gases or liquids, which are ever changing, flowing, and never resting. Earth is solid though. You stand on it, you can pick it up, you can feel its weight, you can feel how hard it is, and it never moves. Earth has weight to it. And the sub-styles of bending for earth are metal-bending and lava-bending. Metal is even heavier than earth/dirt, so its more "substantial" and stubborn. Lava-bending is essentially harnessing the essence of substance and stubbornness to pressurize the earth so much that it volcanizes and turns the earth itself into a slow moving liquid known as lava. And then we have Fire which is the element of power. Fire burns all that it touches but it also provides warmth. All beings generate heat and it is the source of our actions. Fire-bending is often shown as being very offensive, fire-benders will often punch and kick a bunch of quick blasts of fire just to light a small village on fire. Jeong Jeong taught us that fire is a force of destruction, that it cannot be so easily controlled, ...... (taking a nap now)))

So this is probably been said before, and spoilers for the end of the last airbender. But in the final Agni Kai When Azula shoots lightning at katarra zuko successfully manages to redirect it. But IRO says that you need to be grounded when you redirect lightning. When zuko jumped in front of Katarra He could only bring the lightning into himself until he hit the ground. From that point you can see a lightning bolt shoot off in a different direction. Just a cool little detail about that scene, and how zuko managed to live.

I can remember an episode of the Green Lantern series on Cartoon Network where Razor refused to get angry and his ring didn’t work anymore. He had to learn how to balance his anger in order to utilize his ring. In the latest Young Justice installation: Phantoms he duel wields a blue and red ring, talk about Harmonic Convergence!!! Loving all your channels keep up the awesome work👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾

Thanks for making this! I'll be showing this to my grandma because I explaining the Avatar cycle to her and she got really interested! She used to watch ATLA with me a bit when I was younger. A lot people in older generations always assume animated=for kids. Which is fair since most animated cartoons in their generation was only for kids. But I always explain that there's so many amazing animated series that can appeal towards adults. ATLA and TOK is one of those series. Whether you watched it as a kid or watched for the first time as an adult, it's amazing! It's such an incredibly detailed world and videos like this show it. The only older children's serial animated series that comes near to the ATLA series is The Owl House. It gave me the same emotional roller coaster, depth, and details that I love in ATLA. My best friend is an ATLA lover too and even she was skeptical of watching The Owl House. But I had to remind her that ATLA is a children's cartoon too. But now she absolutely loves it and understands why I put TOH under ATLA and TOK.

I always laughed at how complicated bending was made out to be. Surprisingly anyone could become a bender and could choose the element they wanted. It was all about training in a specific form of martial arts. While genetics plays a mild part in proficiency, it comes down to personality. Boomie doesn’t have the personality to want to bend. Yet when the Airbenders re-emerge most had “airy” personalities. This is why getting students proved difficult. Like the wind these people were swept up to listen and then casually lost interest. Only a few were initially willing. Technically anyone could become a bender. The reason why some are stronger when it comes to bloodlines comes down to family disposition. Businessmen have kids who go into business. Laborers have kids who follow that. Tradesmen often pass their skill to their children. It comes to the personality of a child to be successful or not. A perfect case is the difference between The Trump children and Hunter Biden. Political bias aside one group runs successful businesses (despite your personal opinion). The other; not so much, if allegations are true. Airbender grow up and are born around bending. It is a part of their daily lives. They are much like birds. If you ask a bird “Why do you fly?”; it responds with “Because I do”. Airbenders bend like they breathe or their hearts beat.

The thing with firebenders being able to fly. We’ve only ever seen firebenders do that during Sozin’s Comet when their abilities are amplified 100 fold. That or Korra using using the Avatar State, which is essentially the same idea. It’s an artificial power up.

It makes sense that it's easier to fly with fire bending. Since the source of the fire is from within the person when it is directed out of them there would be an equal and opposite force against them. Plus controlled heating of the air which rapidly expands would aid in pushing them their desired direction. Fire benders just need to learn balance and intensity and direction. Air benders would need to condense the air extremely for it to be strong enough to lift someone, plus the human body is filled with curves and aerodynamic making it more difficult to control direction. Gliders make sense because they provide a large surface area and stiff frame to push against.

I love this magic system and the balance of the elements. Water balances fire in flow vs direction, within vs without, canceling out with equal force (incapacitate) vs stamping out with overwhelming force (kill). Air balances Earth space vs matter, growing vs gaining, idea vs reality, restraint vs control. Also Air - Wit Water - Empathy Earth - Detrmination Fire - Drive I would guess that youd be... An airbender. Or a firebender. As a first time watcher so maybe i need more data to accurately guess.

Make a fire cube around you.. there’s how you use fire bending defensively. The narrative of the show is that fire bending has been changed into a more aggressive and offensive style. When zuko relearns firebending from the dragons, he learns all new skills of firebending that resembles the balance and defensive arts of water bending

Waterbending's style was based on tai chi. Aang and Katara's son is not the bumi who told aang about jing, it was aang's childhood friend who they named their oldest child after. Firebenders can't really fly, the most skilled can propel themselves through the air for a short time. Only during sozin's comet was firelord ozai able to propel himself so well it was practically flying.

Without going into much detail, lightning is basically the same as fire and combustion. Just looking at the atomic level, fire is the quick release of chemical bonds releasing atoms. If you break the bonds faster you get combustion (explosion). If instead of breaking the whole atom and just do the lightest part, the electron, you have electricity. Combustion and fire go the speed of sound, but electricity goes about the speed of light, so stopping anything at the speed, with that much energy is significantly harder than just redirecting it. The ties are further deeper in thermodynamics when you consider how power plants and cars make electricity.

Mercury is a metal according to the periodic table of elements, it just happens to melt at room temperature. So that would likely be some hyper advanced metal bending that takes techniques from water bending. Given that Iroh made a few fire bending techniques inspired by other benders, and Zuko used some obvious alternate bending moves in his Agni Kai against Azula it wouldn’t be too far fetched
