Benchtop Spring Pole Lathe - Revisited - Traditional Woodworking
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
I made a spring pole lathe for my bench top a couple of years ago, since moving my bench I've changed it a little. In this video I show you how this traditional woodworking tool operates.
Admittedly I need a lot more experience with this lathe and perhaps some green wood to use with it. I've only ever turned dried wood on the lathe and have never really had any instruction on how to use it except for a few people helping me on my Twitch stream who gave me some great tips.
It's inspired by a traditional woodworker called Roy Underhill, creator of the TV show 'The Woodwrights Shop'. He is a huge inspiration for me and one of the reasons I got into using hand tools, a very knowledgeable man and well worth watching.

My pleasure Jennessa! It's cool what you can learn if you look back at the ways things used to be done.
What? Eleck-trickery in the Timber Anew workshop? Someone get me a brandy, my hands are still shaking! Very entertaining vid Clint, I always find your stuff so enjoyable and inspiring to watch. Cheers mate.

It's a lot of fun!
You can use bolts for the foot plate on the floor. You need a higher tool rest (3×2) cut at 45°. It rests on the two pillars no need to screw it down or you can wedge. No need for the battery driver/drill. Nice vid. 👍

Ahhh good idea thank you 👍 I'll get that tool rest changed!
Looks like you had fun with it . Great to just try out ways that have almost been forgotten

Cheers Frank, it's been a lot of fun making it and using it.
For fixing the pedal to the floor, you might try bolts and threaded inserts

That's certainly an option! Would work pretty well I bet.
Nice, glad to see it's holding up well after all this time. Looks like the leather needs replacing on that mallet, which I'm also glad to see. :)

Thanks a lot Bram! I'd like to make a standalone treadle lathe one day, that'd be fantastic.
I noticed you lathe is rocking back and forth. I'm assuming your bench is wobbling. If you tighten that up, it we really help to smooth out your work.
it looks like the tool rest is a bit high and also the fact its flat keeps you from changing the presentation angle of the tool to the work

I don't really use it anymore unfortunately but if I use it again one day I'll try to make adjustments, thank you
