David “El Monstruo” Benavídez lived up to his nickname and billings as perhaps the sport’s most destructive offensive weapon as he defended his Interim WBC Super Middleweight Title and blitzed former two-division champion Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade with a stoppage after the sixth round in the SHOWTIME PPV main event Saturday night headlining a Premier Boxing Champions event from Michelob ULTRA Arena at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.
The ending came after Andrade’s trainer wouldn’t allow their charge to leave the corner to start the seventh round after Benavidez, fighting his first southpaw in seven years, bloodied and pounded Andrade in perhaps the signature performance of his career. Benavídez (28-0, 24 KOs) remained undefeated as Andrade (32-1, 19 KOs) suffered his first loss.
“I think I just solidified myself as a dominant force here,” Benavídez said. “I just reminded everyone who the real champion at 168 is. Who wants to see me versus Canelo? I'm going to be super middleweight champion of the world, three-time world champion. Now just give me the fight that we all want to see. Who wants to see Benavídez versus Canelo?”
Benavídez punctuated his performance with an embrace of Mike Tyson outside the ring following the stoppage. Tyson famously dubbed Benavídez the “Mexican Monster.”
"I just told Mike Tyson that I love him and thank you so much for the motivation he's given me,” Benavídez said. “It's not every day a boxing legend like Mike Tyson gives people nicknames, so I just want to live up to my name.
“Everybody says I'm not this, I'm not that, I'm flat-footed, I have no defense. This guy probably applied one of the best defenses. He's really good offensively. He could barely even hit me, so I think that says a lot on its own. I just have to keep beating who they put in front of me. I'm the best. I'm going to be the best. I'm going to be a legend by the time I'm done, so whoever you keep putting in front of me, I'll keep knocking them down.
"Let's give the people what they want to see. They want to see Benavídez versus Canelo."
Just as he did against Caleb Plant in March, Benavídez grew stronger and more dangerous as the fight wore on. After Andrade held his own in the opening rounds, Benavídez broke down his 35-year-old opponent with breathtaking efficiently. A looping right hand from Benavídez to the side of the head dropped Andrade for the third time in his career with seconds left in the fourth round. Andrade crumpled to the canvas and rose on shaky legs to survive the round.
Benavídez hurt Andrade again with a left to start the fifth round as he continued to walk Andrade down and land hard punches. Andrade’s right eye started to close midway through the frame as Benavídez teed off on his 35-year-old opponent with a right uppercut and an assortment of short, stinging punches. Andrade took a stand with a minute left in the sixth, uncorking a right uppercut but Benavidez hurt Andrade, a former 2008 U.S. Olympian, with left that had him stumbling across the ring.
It was a far cry from the start of the fight when Andrade was able to smother Benavídez’s punches, darting in and out and winging shots from odd angles that found their mark. Andrade looked sensational in the first two rounds, while Benavídez bided his time, carefully picking his shots. Andrade started to slow down in the third, allowing Benavídez to unload his brand of destructive, compact punches before the knockdown turned the tide in Benavídez’s favor.
“I’ll be back - back to the drawing board,” Andrade said. “I moved up in weight classes. I’ll work on my body a little more and I’ll be right back at it. I thought overall I did everything I needed to do to get the bigger man off me. David's definitely a hell of a fighter. Nobody was even willing to get in the ring with him. I tried to become a three-division world champion. That's not far-fetched. David was the man tonight. Benavídez is the bigger man.”

Wow what a performance. Massive sporty props to Andrade too, he landed some good shots himself but the damage was done. Good on his corner to call it before he took any unnecessary damage, especially since he's got a few good fights left.

This is Benavides sharpest performance. He also showed a spectacular defense as well. Everyone was saying that he don’t have defense but he proved a lot wrong. If Canelo doesn’t fight Benavides now, Im afraid he will just get better and better.

Yea rewatched it and David defense did improve, but it's average at best still. I can Canelo exploiting it for rounds for sure, can David overcome that with his power to break down Canelo, maybe. David should be the favorite, but the veteran in Canelo could find a way to win without question if he jabs and avoids tie ups and close range attacks.

Honestly, the only advantage David has is height and age. Zero cap. I don’t think he can hold one of Canelos blows. Let’s be honest here. Also, canelos head movement is on point. When that fight does happen it’s going to be mega boring. Canelo is going to fight like money mayweather. Bring very very selective of his shots and letting David wear himself out. It will be a mental game for David. Canelo been fighting just as long as David. Canelo has fought more champs and has an even better ring IQ. Only thing canelo has against him is Father Time. We will see

I give David all the credit in the world. Some folks are now saying that Boo Boo was too small. Yeah, I don't know.. He was an undefeated boxer who has been in the game for over 15 yrs and was on the Olympic team. Benavidez is just that good. He's ready for Canelo. I can't wait for that one.

Great fight great win from David benaviadez
Steam roll was a perfect description of what happened. Andrade was throwing fast but Benavidez was planting his feet and bombing. That was something worth the ticket.

Damn, there sure are levels to boxing. Andrade came in sharp throwing beautiful combos that would have devastated most fighters. Benavidez was just overpowering and picked his shots and powershots. Great night og boxing. Happy to also see Jermall Charlo pass his test and shut the other Benavidez up.

Beautiful combos that would have devasted most fighters? Maybe smaller domestic guys he was used to fighting but even then he can look sloppy and ineffective. At any rate, other than throwing a few flurries Andrade didn't really have much to offer and looked out of his element from the start.

His volume is high work rate, he’s powerful, uses his size, insanely accurate, underrated defense/IQ, fast reflexes and high stamina and durability. I see Benavidez out working Canelo to a decision.

I couldn't believe this match last night the first three rounds David was just feeling it out but he really picked it up that 4th 5th and 6th round I was so shocked the fight didn't even make it to 7 rounds

Great sportsmanship by both men. Super win by David Benavidez
I think Andrade deserves big-time praise for taking this fight, moving up in weight to do it, and then fighting valiantly in it. Zero shame here. Previously I didn't always like his brashness, frankly, but on this night he showed he wasn't just a talker, but a true 'doer' in the ring (unlike Charlo).
Benavidez has been looking better and better every fight! His defense was really good in this fight. Andrade barely landed any of those punches he was throwing in bunches in the first few rounds. Benavidez definitely has a strong argument for being the best at 168

What? He was taking the shots, not dodging them. The only reason he won is Andrade being completely gassed out by round 5. Otherwise he was landing the better punches up until round 6. Andrade is a better boxer from technique standpoint but he lacks stamina (at least in this fight) and ability to take a punch.

just no benevedez can block punches and roll under punches side slip punches all that. His offensive technique was better straights up top downstairs hooks to the body uppercuts and hook combos to the head inside all of it

Andrade had some good moments earlier on but it seemed like Benevidez could take Andrades shots, but Andrade couldn’t take Benevidezs shots. You could tell when Andrade went to his corner he looked rattled and done, but I was still surprised he quit on his stool, but he never really recovered after the first knockdown. After that it was only a matter of time.
