McKenna takes the time and improves every player. He will become an even better player with regulars first team football and the coaching he will receive at ITFC.

It is a shame about Ben Johnson. He has been treated poorly. I wish him all the best for his move to Ipswich and for the rest of his career.⚒

Gross mistreatment & mismanagement of home grown talent

Johnson is a good squad player and has been with West Ham since he was a child. I will be sad to see him go.

I don't believe that money is the main reason. I just think the kid wants to play every week. He clearly felt undervalued by West Ham. However, he is a Premier League player and a Europa League Conference winner who was still on U21 wages and was offered little more. Shame on you Sullivan

The irony now is Sullivan has to do something he hates doing - spending money on a fullback. Good luck to Johnson. He’s been a great servant and pro for the club.

TBH, this one saddens me more than Benni or Fornals, mainly cos it highlights the sheer incompetence of our board even more, and their lack of appreciation for things that are important and meaningful to the fans. Not to mention their complete inability. once again, to see the big picture. Ben is home grown, West Ham through and through, a complete utility player, and one that I believe could have been an absolute asset if given regular games in the right position. He was one of the only bright sparks when our season went turgid and gave the club more than enough opportunity to do right by him. Seemed like a lovely kid too that was very highly thought of by the rest of the squad. There's absolutely no way we can guarantee his replacement will not cost more money than he would've, or will fit in and deliver like he did. Madness! I live in Ipswich so have been keeping a close eye on the team, Manager etc. Although I'm gutted to lose Johnno, I'm glad that he's going to Ipswich. They have a Manager, a team, and a playing style that will really suit him and hopefully get the best out of him. The fans will love him too. Whether they get to play that style in the Prem we'll have to wait and see but I think this was probably the best move he could've made, and I wish him all the very best.

I appreciate his time playing for West Ham even if he didn’t play a greater role for the club and proved himself enough to the managers/coaches he’s played for. I hope he stays healthy and does well for Ipswich Town. Wish him the best.

I can't help but see similarities between the Johnson and Diangana situations. Neither player wanted to leave, both were ultimately pawns in a long game

Big shame. Last of the academy players. Looked great as a 19/20 year old breaking into the team and should have become an established PL player. Looked alright last season too. Feel like West Ham let him down and Im surprised so few West Ham supporters and staff rate him.

I believe he’s highly rated by many of the coaches at the club with a couple telling him he should have played more (last season) often. Not that it matters much now though. Next season be first for me with no academy players in the first team (appreciate Earthy get SOME minutes)

I'm an Ipswich fan. It's always somewhat satisfying to read references that someone is missed. However, your loss is our gain. Keiron McKenna has proven to be outstanding with developing talent, for him the perfect player is one who hasn't played to their potential rather than on already at their peak. Transforming a mid-table League One team to one winning automatic promotion (notably without parachute funds) in 2.5 seasons is an exceptional achievement. Now it's clear just 2-3 signings in summer is insufficient, it seems 7 + goalkeepers are being lined up. Anyway, good luck and may I wish you well for the other 36 games next season ;)

Johnson comes across as a level headed, intelligent lad. Just the sort of young player that Kieran McKenna will enjoy coaching.. Always sad to see a home grown player drift off... We've got a few at Ipswich, that will probably not be able to keep up with the speed of our trajectory... He''ll get plenty of minutes at Ipswich and he's under the wing of some very good coaching staff. And coming to a very positive dressing room..

I think he's come to the right club. I'm an ITFC fan and can tell you that boy will be well looked after by the club, from the owner, CEO and manager to all the players he plays with. They have made all the players feel part of a family and the results over the past two years have shown that. We may not have the best players the prem, hell we didn't have the best players in the championship. But we had the best togetherness, and everyone from top to bottom fights for each other. If KMc sees that in him, which you guys obviously do, he'll do very well at Portman Road. So thank you WHU for buggering up a simple contract offer to a player who clearly deserved better.

Johnson should be at Ipswich. It's the only way he'll be able to prove himself. All of what both of you said is true so no point reiterating your points. Taking a cold calculated view, he still wouldn't beat Vlad out for a starting spot. Nor would he beat anyone else out for their position. Even if we had deigned to pay him what he's worth, he wouldn't play much. He'd continue to be a spare tire for West Ham. He'll get to push his football on at Ipswich under a good manager. He'll be a leader immediately. Arguably, he'll be the most important player in their side. I wish him well and look forward to watching him succeed.

Coufal makes more sense to replace. He's ageing and quite simply isn't good enough. Johnson yes isnt good enough to start as Right back but he is a good backup option and Coufal makes more sense to replace seeing that he is a starter and therefore his role is more important to the team and if he isnt pulling his weight (which he isnt) then replacing him makes more sense to me. I do understand where you are coming from tho however, I feel he hasnt had enough game time to show his quality and to be fair when he does play he tends to pull his weight more often than not yet the coaching staff and Moyes clearly disagreed.

I think Johnson made up his mind to leave months ago, and ironically that's when we saw him showing the kind of freedom and ability that suggested he could be a top 8 player.

If the season started tomorrow id probably be starting Johnson. I was hoping that when Jlo came in that he'd stay. Wonder what Mark Noble thinks about this 🤔 I remember on your video with Ricky Martin, Gonzo, that he mentioned how good he was when he'd drop back to the under 23s and what an example he was. Hurts to lose a character like this.

As an Ipswich supporter, it is good business for Ipswich, as we have been building a squad where the entire squad is involved, Mc Kenna was not Manager of the Year for nothing. The rumour is £60K a week for Johnson The success of the last two years is the first time ever a team has got 90 plus point two years in a row, with the second year being in a higher division? We will need to up our game to stay up, but in my view we will be between 10th and 12th.

Lots of excellent comments about this. If Lopetegui wanted to keep Johnston I think he’d have made it happen. I don’t think he’d ever be our first choice and he’s decided to go where he thinks he’ll get regular football.

Ben will do a good job and be appreciated at Ipswich.Wan Bissaka with Coufal can cover the right side. Who really knows what is going to be a good fit with this new man in charge. Only time will tell. I don’t see a big improvement initially. Low expectations leads to less disappointments.

A few things, club just didn’t really treat him too well but it’s something we struggle with - those from the academy, having the same issue again with Lewis Orford now

As you say, this contract should have been easy to sort out. So why hasn't it been? The obvious answer is that the club didn't think he was good enough. He looked good enough to me and to you two, but what do we know? I wish him well and hope he has a good career, but if he doesn't I won't be all that surprised.

In that game against sheffield united when Ben came into midfield he was a head above the the other players on the pitch. Although Sheffield was the worst team in the league, he is hardly a bad player. What kind of idiocy is there not to give the likes of Orford, Earthy or Johnsson a decent salary. Think you guys are missing the point today....Ben just wasnt good enough for where we want to be...all be it a squad player who sits on bench and only good enough for a fill in when injuries..(most players who come off the bench should have an impact for 20 mins)..he agreed with his current contract and fullfilled his term....its actually the best for him...to be playing week to week at Ipswich...and he ll be regarded as a quality player there because of his achievements at Hammers being involved in Europe and our profile as a club over past 4 years....he s gotta be excited for the new season and looking back I think he ll agree its the best move for himself...well done Ben...go and enjoy your football....

I think you are missing out point as well though. The club didn’t decide not to give him a new deal, they weren’t good enough offers at all. We also say going to Ipswich is a good move so we agree on that

I think this is a win for Ben, he actually gets to play football and that’s the most important part. It’s better for us because now we are FORCED to buy a RB. Having both Ben and Coufal stops us upgrading, because 3 RB is pointless. So I hope we see us bring in a first team RB that gives us something more than Coufal. Good luck Ben and thanks for your service, but getting back to playing football week in week out will kickstart your career again.

@@HammersChat But traditional we’ve never really had a DoF, so I’m hoping we can get past those mistakes of the past. Slightly naive of me but I live in hope. I think thats why they never really wanted to have Coufal and Johnson on longer contracts, not so much higher money because they needed to always replace both of them, either this year or next. (I’m guessing obviously) So now it’s either a cheap 1 year temp replacement or an upgrade. But either way they need to be faster and more attacking. 🤞

Wasn't he wanting £50k pw - Coufal is on £30k pw and deserves more than that - maybe £30k is more what he should have been asking for. He may have got game time with us with the new manager but we will never know.

But if you compare him to Ings - £100k per week and more, then he’s not asking for much. I feel it’s harsh to compare versus other players and the club should have a better structure and for the most part I think they do But they really struggle with academy players stepping into the first team and I think it’s down to giving Reece Oxford his deal

@@helenludlow2331 he was but he only signed that eventually, the original contract offer to Declan was a LOT less but he rejected it and numerous more. By time club accept their ask, they’ve played more games etc and their ask has increased. Also with Declan, he was offered £200k a week. Now he was never going to sign it but he was ‘only’ on 60 as he rejected contract offers but he could easily had been on a lot

I don’t have any issues with his wage demands. I don’t think he’s a much worse full back than coufal. Plus, he has inherent value being home grown. No reason why he shouldn’t be paid as much as coufal, minimum.

Can’t blame him really. He was treated really badly by the club’s hierarchy. Sad really because he was a good squad player.

Hmm, we need players that can compete for places, not just 'squad' players. Squad players get you mid-table. I thought people weren't happy with that?

Still, having real competition for every position shouldn't just come down to his much money you throw at the problem either, no? Isn't that what recruitment is about?

I'm not sure but I think that his "financial" value as a sale (Academy player) on PSR is an immediate benefit ie sale price in total impacts this years bottom line. I hope someone more informed can clarify.

I think it's a bigger shame that we didn't try to sign Leif Davis? The guy had a quality season in the championship and I don't know why he didn't make the national team? Southgate's in desperate need for a player in the LB position and should've given him the nod especially ahead of Shaw.

Southgate would have been slaughtered taking a championship left back. Also, getting Davis from a promoted Ipswich is laughable. If Ipswich failed to get promoted he would be available. Once they got promoted, we had no chance.

I think he’s a decent player, never caused an issue, can play various positions and club trained too which can be priceless when in European football. Good enough for first choice right back? Maybe not but more than to have a role in squad, imo anyway.

No manager can guarantee a player playing time..

Squad player at best and wish him well as mentioned before by others, great lad but not at the level WH need to break into the top 6 consistently. Would he get into the teams above us? Answer…. No.

All the best for Ben but being honest never thought he was a good player. Yeah can play in lots of positions but was never premiership quality at any of them. Don’t understand people getting sad over this. If he wasn’t from the academy no one wouldn’t have a problem with this.

I don’t think he’s good enough, and I think whatever we offered him was reflective of that, below average prem player for me

Ironically? The word is actually used not just in this video but in many that Gonzo puts out. I'm not saying they are incorrect, but assumptions none the less. From wages to feelings to future performances. We know actual jack and shit on any and Jack's left town. Did i want him to stay? Yes. But you're treating ths just like the academy players that left under Moyes. Of which I'm still for the "where are they now" video on those players. The very basic level of how we lost with Ben Johnson leaving is that we didn't get paid. Good squad player? Sure. Therapy sessions for the loss? Not so much.

When some suggested he may sign, I’ve consistently said he’s rejected the deal and was joining another Premier League club and cover some of the reasons in this video, the club handled it badly, I will add Tim Streidten isn’t included in that as it was done prior. Then again, some said I made up the Wes Foderingham transfer rumour so maybe thats an incorrect assumption too
