    Saturday at the golf course I was pulling my approach shots to the left. I think it’s because at 5’8” I was going too high with my hands in the backswing. I’ve been focused on bending at the knees a half inch lower so that I can dramatically feel my weight on my left side. Surrendering control to my left side creates a much more dynamic rotation in the downswing. So with high hands I was coming across the ball and pulling to the left. With lower hands I can better externally rotate my right elbow and hit through the ball.

    Another great one Eric! That’s exactly what I’ve been working on with the help of you and Steve. This has really helped using this backswing along with a setup that puts the hands on the inside of left thigh with the shaft and left arm in a straight line. I’ve found that by using these two techniques has somehow made it easier for the downswing to come from the inside. Another bonus is that it has helped with early extension. It seems to automatically help in shallowing the downswing without having to manipulate your arms to achieve the same thing. 👍👊

    I took video of myself at the range and saw that I was way too high at the top of the backswing which caused an over the top swing. I came across this video, and the hands over the toe line at club parallel was my wtf!? Moment because I know my hands have never been in that position at club parallel. I took another vid with hands over toes and I was on f$&@ing plane!!! I will take this to the range and put it into practice tomorrow, I’ll report back with results. Update: instant results! I was able to stay on plane and make way better contact. Was hitting my 7 iron 180-190 consistently, no slices or pulls.

    Hi Eric, my son and I (UK) both love your videos, thank you!! Seems to me that in order to mimick this beautiful swing, especially keeping the trail elbow pointing to the ground in the backswing, one needs to have the back of the lead hand pointing to the sky throughout, which will then surely then fan the clubface open?? I just can't see how getting the hands behind the trail shoulder can result in anything else, or am I missing something here plse? Many thanks Andrew

  • @CogornoGolf

    @CogornoGolf

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks, Andrew! If I'm understanding you correctly the issue here is your thinking of the lead arm/elbow. If the right elbow points more down (external) you do that INDEPENDENT of the left arm/shoulder. So the lead shoulder should stay DOWN and left elbow toward the ground as well. Likely when you are making your right shoulder point down (external) you are lifting left shoulder and making left elbow point away....thats no good. Hope that helps kzread.info/dash/bejne/hIaDraOFgpTeorg.html

    @@CogornoGolf Hi Eric, thanks for the response! However, I'm moreso referring to Ben's trail elbow here. In other words, and as we know, it's quite a flat backswing, but in order to get the hands behind the trail shoulder in the backswing, surely you've got to keep the TRAIL elbow pointing down throughout? In order to achieve above, and keep backswing flat, will there not be some lead forearm rotation in said backswing? Thanks again Andrew

  • @CogornoGolf

    @CogornoGolf

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey Andrew! You would not need to keep the elbow down (external) to get the depth. You could have the elbow(humerus) more out (internal) and still have plenty of depth (hands behind shouldeR) with trail shoulder retraction. OF course there will be SOME forearm rotation. I'm still not sure I'm 100% understanding or explaining well but hope that helps :)

    Right on, brother.! I wasted a year trying to develop more power using a higher swing plane and all it did was increase dispersion. A flat swing plane works far better for me! You just have to learn how to twist the palm down on the downswing to create lag and square the face to the target while shifting the weight forward, or you will slice every time

    Stupid comment maybe, but with driver for example, I feel its easier to have the hands high and then just let them fall as I start the downswing with my hips/lower body. If the driver gets on a too flat angle I often block the ball and the shaft feels harder to work on a more flat angle. Maybe IM doing something wrong.

    It depends on how you transition on your down swing. If you drop your hands during your down swing, you are probably getting stuck and push or flip you shots. Therefore your club pro have you go higher so it allows you to drop your hands in the slot. Hogan doesn’t drop his hand, he takes back and rotates through with his hips as his hands are already bin the slot. Another term for a single plane swing. It’s meant to be simpler.

    Here are the main issue with golf. Most people are not flexible or athletic/strong. Hogan was. Most people try to hit the ball using their arms, not their body. This imprints an initial flight on the ball. They then spend decades fighting that initial imprint with more mistakes that makes them inconsistent. The old adage of the easier you swing the further i goes, is the ONLY rule that should ever be taught and remembered. If you want to hit it further, you need to just speed up the lower body, not the upper body! People ask me, "how can I hit it further" I give them some strength and flexibility tests. If they fail those I say, "you cant until you fix those issues"

    Keep in mind Ben's clubs had incredibly flat lie angles by today's standards . At least 8 degrees flat in the irons and over 12 degrees flat in the driver. Trying this with modern lie angles will be trainwreck. I happen to think modern lie angles are far too upright and there is an explanatory history why that is not good. Flatter lie angles go straighter. Anyone know why? It's yet another non intuitive thing in golf....
