This is going to be so much fun to see you get this one all together man! Lots of scratching and fixing but like you say, that's half the fun! Hobby Boss need to hire you as a researcher man

Thanks Joe! I would love to research things for Hobby Boss, but I would be afraid to get in to some of their kits, so many problems lol! This is a fun one though, so I can't complain too much. Thanks for watching, buddy!

Excellent start! 👍🏻👏🏻👌🏻 You really can see where the great F4 came from, can't you?

Thank you! There is a distinct family resemblance here for sure, such an interesting aircraft. So far, the kit is going together nicely, and I can't wait to get the fuselage all built up. See you on episode 3!

There're so many inaccuracies in this kit. I just said the hell with it and built it the way I wanted!

Good point, David! It's too bad it isn't more accurate, but it builds up well, so still having fun. Thanks for watching!

Looking good! The little details added are really going to make the cockpit pop, especially when painted,

Thank you! I like adding in those little details, they really bring a bit of extra life to an area. There's a lot more to do, but this is a blast so far.

Great start Ben, she is going to one big bird when done. For the instrument panel I would go with painting the radar black so it is still there but not very visible! 👍😎

Thanks, Richard! This is a big model, for sure. That's a good idea about the instrument panel, I just wish I had a picture of something more definitive, but if a major publication couldn't find anything, I might be out of luck. Either way, it'll still be a fun build. Thanks for watching, and I'll see you on the next episode!

Ben nice build ,i did my F3H few months ago is a great model ,the only i think you need to get is the extra photoetch parts for the wings and airbrakes and resin wheels the kit is very basic and missing important external details especially at the airbrakes and flaps area ! I send you on facebook a link from Mediafire for all the ebooks i got available for this model ,hope it helps !

That's awesome buddy, thank you! I'll have to go check those out. I'll keep an eye out for the PE set, and if it's not too expensive, I'll try and pick it up. I'm enjoying this kit so far, so I'm excited to do more research and get back on the bench.

Thanks, Mike! This is a great little kit, despite the inaccuracies. I think I've worked out the instrument panel, but the upper coping is the next question. I need to figure out the gunsight too. Just more fun to be had lol. I appreciate you watching!

My guess is the F3H didn’t have a wwii style gun sight, but it simply just displayed the reticle directly on the glass in front of the pilot. And going forward with that, the 2M’s reticle projector was different, or it had a separate projector right next to the normal reticle projector, that displayed the radar symbology on top of the reticle. Like an early version of a modern HUD

Thank you! That would make a lot of sense. The author refers to it as a gun sight, but it's definitely not like a World War II gun sight, so it's probably an early version of a HUD. The author also mentioned that the -2 M only had a small range indicator and that the radar "also fed ranging inputs to the Gun Sight." I wonder if it would be a similar layout to the -1. That's the only problem with references, the more you dive in, the more inaccuracies you pick up in a kit. Oh well, that's half the fun! Thanks for watching, and I'll see you on the next episode.

@@BenBuilds the “feeding of ranging input to the gun sight” is pretty common for that time period, the F-86 had a small ranging radar set in the nose as well, the radar feeds the gun sight “computer” with range to the target so the pilot only had to put the reticle on the target before firing. The lead would be calculated and then the reticle would move, in accordance with the pilot-induced g-loading, so all the pilot had to do was to keep the reticle on the enemy and fire to ensure a high chance of hitting the enemy. The “computer” would calculate the lead with the radar ranging. This removed the need to identify the enemy and then dial in the wing span, that would adjust the size of the reticle, so that when the enemy aircraft wing tips were at either edge of the reticle, the lead would be correct like in most wwii gun sights (iirc the gun sight in the Bf 109’s and Fw 190’s had a chart just below the glass where the reticle is projected with wingspan sizes of common allied aircraft)

I fly the Mirage III’s, Mirage 5F and Kfir C2 semi regularly in war thunder simulator and they also have a radar /ranging radar. Once the correct target is being tracked by the radar it’s quite easy to score hits with the relatively slow moving 30mm’s

Nice video. What type of drill is that your using with the green button on the end?

  • @BenBuilds

Thanks! That was a battery operated drill that I picked up off of Amazon. It is no longer listed, however I'm sure someone has something similar. If it helps, it was called the Yakamoz Mini DIY Hand Drill. It wasn't too expensive and it works well enough. It is a bit limiting on the allowable bit size, but it takes most of the smaller bits just fine. Thanks for watching!
