Join mixer Ben Baptie for his debut MWTM series! Hosted at Pony Studios in London, this instalment guides you through Ben’s general workflow and focusses on his mix of ‘The Adults Are Talking’ by American rock band The Strokes. He gives an overview of his studio, hybrid setup, and routing, then dives into the multi-track session to reveal his techniques! You will learn how Baptie combines the use of outboard gear and plug-ins to enrich the sounds of vocals, instruments, and the overall mix. Despite going into detail on parameter settings of various tools, he places emphasis on the importance of intuition and emotion in his approach to any project. He discusses what he learned from his prestigious mentor Tom Elmhirst and elaborates on the psychological aspect of mixing, all the while stressing the importance of having solid technical foundations that allow creativity to flourish!

Julian’s solo vocals sound so good! Didn’t pick up on the vibrato until now.
One of the best mixed strokes albums hands down
I wish y’all would sell seminars individually

Yup this is why I'll never pay for them. A 12-month subscription to see 1 video I'm interested in...nope!

I wish they shared this all for free instead of gatekeeping like everyone else in the industry
Loved hearing the raw drums 0:51
He seems very clear and focused on how he explains his process. Looking forward to watching this one!
I'd spend my money just to watch the man mixing the whole song. This would be damn interesting to feel all the vibes of that piece of art.
Great! A video that actually gets to the point! Thanks so much
Amazing ,thank you
This is cool, I wish there was a longer version with more detail

Quickest mix ever
1:10 damn I wish they had another version with the drums standing out However the guitars sound so crispy clean
Would love to see him break down his mixes on Little Simz most recent album!
Ahh he'll yeah
you should put an option to rent specific content. being completely honest i would love to see every course in there but i'm not a mix engineer and the full membership is too expensive. i wouldn't be able to take out the best of this, so i prefer to watch specific content in a more affordable price.
He said the drums and bass all have the same attack and release on comp. So it makes it feel more of a dance track? Is he putting a comp on it all or individual comps with same attack and release? I want to understand this concept better. Anyone help? 😁

Not entirely sure because I haven’t watched the actual class, but if I had to guess… he most likely used different compressors with slightly different settings because the source material is so different (various acoustic drums in comparison to the 808). What I mean by this is they would be processed separately so that the end results of both (acoustic drum mix and the 808 sample) give the same “pumping” feel by compressing it pretty hard which is all dependent on the source material. You can get the pumping feel in a drum mix (in this case the acoustic drum mix) by putting compressors on the individual drum tracks, but the pumping usually comes from bus compressors placed on the acoustic drum mix bus doing a lot of compression. Then when adding the 808 sample on top, you would match that feel with another compressor on the sample. Then, what people tend to do is compress everything together a little bit to give it some glue, but the pumping effect would be done separately before that happens in my opinion. Hope this helps!!

He mentioned that he gated the drums so that they would fit better with the 808 and make it feel more like a dance track. I think he was referring to the gate as opposed to compression.

He not talking about compression he said he gated all the tracks, meaning the drums go silent again after they're hit making it sound more like a dance track using samples as opposed to an overly "natural" drum sound

I'd love an explanation for Brooklyn Bridge to Chorus. Why are the opening synths SO loud?

Lol
I'm more confused now than when I clicked on this.
"I'll just be honest with myself, at this time" - what's he talking about!? More of the technical stuff and less of the pseudo-philosophy please!
Don't go there
