I learned water rescue and saving at the Plunge. I and my neighborhood friends would bike down from Mt. Soledad where we lived to Balmonte Park to do the rides…and especially that great old wooden, creaky roller coaster. Of course that was back when parents had no fear in letting their kids go off for the whole day. Truly great place to grow up! Oh, just remembered too, since we neighborhood kids lived very near Kate Sessions park on Mt. Soledad we used to freeze BIG blocks of ice. Then put it in a red wagon (yes the ol Red Flyer) and off to the park. One by one we’d take turns sitting on the ice block at the top of the grassy hills and slide all the way to the bottom. Ya have to be creative living in a no snow zone! It was just like sledding, but with ZERO control. (We did learn to freeze rope in the ice for dragging it up the hill! Ah childhood.

In the summer of '73, I ran the Pool Hall concession there. My Girlfriend worked in the Froaty-Freeze stand close to the other end of the Park.
