bell hooks & Gloria Steinem at Eugene Lang College

Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts (www.newschool.edu/lang) invites you to join bell hooks and Gloria Steinem in a discussion about how feminism encourages transgression, or not.
Gloria Steinem is a writer, lecturer, editor, and feminist activist. She travels in this and other countries as an organizer and lecturer and is a frequent media spokeswoman on issues of equality. She is particularly interested in the shared origins of sex and race caste systems, gender roles and child abuse as roots of violence, non-violent conflict resolution, the cultures of indigenous peoples, and organizing across boundaries for peace and justice. She now lives in New York City, and is currently at work on Road to the Heart: America As if Everyone Mattered, a book about her more than thirty years on the road as a feminist organizer.
bell hooks (née Gloria Watkins) is among the leading public intellectuals of her generation. Her writings cover a broad range of topics including gender, race, teaching, and contemporary culture. This fall marks the 20th Anniversary of the publication of Teaching to Transgress: Education as a Practice of Freedom, Dr. hooks’ seminal book on educational practices. This weeklong residency is an opportunity for The New School community to directly engage with Dr. hooks and her commitment to education and learning as a place “where paradise can be created.”
Introduction by Dr. Ann Snitow, Eugene Lang College.

Haven't watched it yet, but getting excited to! Currently in Women's Studies and it's amazing how much you learn about society's constructs. As men, we also need to heed the call of feminism and stop letting patriarchy and oppression control those we love.

Chris Praolini The USA is not a patriarchy. Women have full civil rights with men. Feminism is bullshit! Women are not oppressed by men at all. We should be talking about class and corporate capitalism and the oligarchy, not race and sex. This is fake progressive politics, a distraction from the real oppression, the oppression of labor by capital. This is a lot of bourgeois bullshit!

my only question that emerges every second is; if you're refuting patriarchy why do you keep trying to copy it to be considered equals, why be powerful the way men have been why not create your own path of being powerful and perhaps not equal but different in a better way. because the way you wanna tackle patriarchy is not by copying them, not in the way you dress, talk or deal with feelings so why choose to do all this things like them. aka the revolution of the female dress was to copy mens pants its a form of rebellion but one of submissiveness to their gender.

8:40 - Lie. The world population favors females. They live longer and live better than any other demographic. (men) 8:55 - You're comparing a war to domestic violence? Not only that, but where's the numbers in that? You could say x number are killed in Iraq and y number are killed by domestic violence and that y > x. You can't though because you don't know. I'd bet you're also comparing the war to global domestic violence deaths which is a blatant false equivalence. 9:30 - Your movement is in silos? Does every university in the country count as a silo? You've literally invaded every nook and cranny you possibly could. How are you isolated? 10:00 - You were pro Hilary until you found out what she was for? So you were for a woman until you used your brain. Do you not see what's wrong with the stance of "My default position is to empower women REGARDLESS OF THEIR INTENTIONS."??? 10:15 - Begin patriarchy nonsense. x2 x3 x4 C-C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER 11:10 - You want to stay away from anybody who is not your ally? That's a cult mindset if I've ever heard one. The very foundation of our nation is built on the principle of differing opinions. By rejecting that notion you are quite literally against democracy. 11:55 - Now it's about race? You don't have to work directly with black people to not be racist... 13:15 - You didn't go to school so you missed brainwashing. Thus, you decided to begin your own. 14:05 - Now you're conscious? So until this point you were dead from the neck up. Anybody think that might have had some long lasting effects? 14:30 - Nobody told you who your friends were... you just said you lived in an all black neighborhood and moved to India for two years. Clearly nobody told you otherwise. 14:50 - What is this nonsense? You don't have to be friends to do business together nor politics... This is that hive mind nonsense that these people push. Like I said, a differing of opinions makes the world move. If we all thought the same way we would be nowhere as a society. 15:15 - Imperialist, White Supremacist, Capitalist, Patriarchy. Well shit, I think you just triggered about 85% of your audience there. Might want to tone down the dial on that foil hat there babe. 15:30 - "You see others as a resource to enhance you." You mean like how women see men. *Moments later* - "You see how smart she is?" Careful, your confirmation bias is showing. 15:50 - Can white people go to places of color? Of course. Why not? 16:30 - Well no shit hospitality has to go both ways. I think her wanting to bring back something from her trip is important as well. Commerce is a huge aspect of travel as is tourist commerce. 17:25 - What are you bringing with you? If I'm going on vacation then all I'm bringing is clothes and money... In all seriousness though, I understand what she's trying to say. She's against the voluntourism movement that has been happening. There's nothing wrong with going on vacation for the sake of going on vacation though and that's something she doesn't understand. Just because you go somewhere else doesn't mean you have to go there for the explicit benefit of dedicating your time there to help them. For example, if I go to India for a few days vacation to sight see I'm not going to stop and help build a local impoverished school. That's not my objective and there's nothing wrong with that. More power to those that do this kind of work though and take the time out of their lives to better those around them. Once again though, that's not what travel is about. She's advocating for a utilitarian standpoint, that since you're able bodied you must. Nothing says you must and you certainly aren't required to. 19:50 - You broke your hand and wrist and couldn't dress yourself? Well shit, sounds like a bit more's wrong than just a couple broken bones... P.s. What girl doesn't like fashion...? 20:10 - "Most white women don't help women of color" Yes.... *wrings hands* .... destroy each other from the inside. 20:45 - "You can do without religion." Religion is great. Religious people are the most generous and caring people you can meet. There's a reason they make the most donations out of any demographic. 22:15 - "Monotheism is imperialism." What is up with these buzzwords...? Can't these people discuss issues without resorting to grouping them into this negative connotation pigeon hole? We get it, YOU DON'T LIKE THESE THINGS. Stop clumping them together, it just shows how blurred your ability to differentiate between things are. You can't view something as an individual subject, it has to be grouped, categorized, labeled, and hated in order to be talked about. 23:00 - Yes, you can be white and still love people. Shocking to you, I know. 23:20 - What does it matter what color somebody is? Like you said, Bhudda doesn't get fit into a particular demographic. It's color blind. When you see a color you stop and have to think about what that color means. Stop seeing color. 24:50 - There's a reason that belief has these rules. That's why it's a belief... 26:10 - Yup, too hippy for me right now... Tuning out for a bit. 27:00 - Buzzwords part two. Electric boogaloo. 27:35 - Women still control their own fertility... What are you talking about? And they didn't have words for he and she but still knew the differences between themselves. 29:00 - Who cares about human nature...? Everyone should.... Nature governs our bodies and governs our lives to a certain extent. It's a foundation that we build on. We should all care about human nature. Oh, that's right, you have this hippie notion of transcendence which somehow comes back to feminism. Hah! 29:35 - You say all men are not the enemy and then you move forward demonizing men... Like... I can't understand you people. You express a lot of hate towards men because you hate men. It's seriously that plain and simple. Lesbians do actually hate men by the way. You say they shouldn't but for some reason they still do. 31:00 - I wonder how many times they can spout this patriarchy nonsense. Seriously, let's count the buzzwords. It's like, every time they say this word I instantly consider them less intellectual. 32:00 - You have more economic power and yet there's somehow still patriarchy... What's patriarchy again? Men having power? But you just said women have more economic power... Do you hear yourself? 33:00 - I'm glad she admits that violence against children is most often instigated by women. That's a first. Gotta applaud you on that small bit. 33:30 - Four generations to heal one act of violence? Is that additive? Oh you're lying again with the female to male ratio, never mind your mind is slipping again. Blurring all the lines here, haha. 34:30 - Dominant and passive is certainly okay. If that's what people want and will help move everything along to a better world then yes, that's okay. These are the reasons that men have developed to be more productive than women. 35:50 - Heteronormative, men, families, fuck them all. Go do your own thing. Now they're coming back and men aren't there. And yes, women are looking for men. As a general rule, yes they are. 36:20 - BLINDED BY PATRIARCHY!!!! 37:00 - Congrats, you have some art. This focus on objects is pretty silly to affirm your own being... 38:10 - Being alone can actually be very calming and very beneficial for people. Myself included, isolation has done wonders for my sanity. 39:10 - Feminism is a shield? No... feminism is a sword to cut down everything in front of it. How is a girl noticing that a character is not black self hatred? Like holy shit you jumped from a girl's cognition of differences to some kind of internalized, angsty, pissy brat that has been molded into this by PATRIARCHY!!! Cinderella isn't black, good for her to recognize that. I personally would congratulate her for noting that and being able to point out obvious differences in the world around her. 40:50 - What the fuck? You can't write a story about loving boys without writing that they're better than girls? Sounds like you're simply not a creative person. Like seriously, holy hell you cannot be that stupid... I don't believe it. 41:10 - Yes, I get it you don't like boys. You don't want to encourage boys and build them up. You don't want boys to be successful unless if it benefits women in a greater way. 42:45 - White people... men... the dominant group. Jeeze, let off it, you don't know what you're talking about. Nobody feels guilt over building up the civilization you now take for granted. They feel guilt for raising you to be so self entitled. 44:55 - Domestic violence is original violence? Hah! That's a joke if I ever heard one. You think everything stems from domestic violence. Primal violence, hahaha. 45:10 - Wow that was hateful if I heard it. "Women and children shouldn't leave the house, the criminal should leave the house." Well shit, I can't imagine who's the criminal now huh? Passive aggressive cunt... I'm done after that, she's shown her obvious hatred very clearly. This person is a cancer on society and the sooner they're gone, the sooner we can start working to undo the damage they've done.
