Bell CEO grilled by MPs over sweeping job cuts: “Do you think this is a joke?”
Bell Canada Enterprises Inc. CEO Mirko Bibic testified before the House of Commons heritage committee on Thursday, defending his company's largest layoffs in decades.
It dealt a major blow to newsrooms across the country, as well as the loss of multiple radio stations and television newscasts.
"Do you think this is a joke? Do you enjoy wasting my time?” Conservative MP Rachel Thomas asked during the hearing.
Eric Sorensen looks at the combative exchanges, the accusations of greed and why one expert says the job cuts signal a need for innovation in Canadian journalism.

Ok so he was grilled. So we’re the grocery chains. Frankly without any real answers from Mr. CEO or consequences I’m afraid this is just a bunch of word salad. DO SOMETHING!

Why does the government give money to huge, multi billion dollar companies?

@@j-rocsk Because we vote in career politicians, greasy back door dealing lawmakers, instead of real working people. Laws will always be made to benefit these groups and their cronies if we don't start putting the right people in office.
100's of millions of dollars from the Canadian tax payer and answers to the government. Where have we seen systems like that before?
@josephsmith594

Hundreds of millions from Canadian taxpayers but does not answer to government, answers to shareholders. BCE is a publicly traded company that pays out dividends to shareholders annually. This grilling was a farce. If we want a government funded news media that works for Canadians we have one, CBC.

Journalists should not be given public money…. It literally defeats their purpose. Which is to inform the public about what the government is going & if there is abuses of power.

I disagree. Journalists who are funded by private companies would be way worse. Private companies would actually be able to control what news are covered. Publicly funded journalism helps promote real journalism. The paranoia that our government has a tight grip on journalism and controls the news is false. Many other sectors receive government funding too. Education, policing, etc. Just because the government helps fund journalism doesn't mean they have an iron grip on it. They're simply funneling money into the industry.

Right...got it. If Canadians want Canadian news, they have to pay Bell execs more money. It's about time for these companies to hit the road. Astronomical profits and they need a handout.
It's all a political circus, business executives and politicians are all in bed together
Businesses can do what they want. Clearly there is a bigger disparity between the rich and poor. No innovation is needed when there are only a few companies controlling the top.
Hundreds of millions from the Govt? Do we subsidize Bell also?
This ceo has done nothing for bell. He does not innovate, he does not invent, he does not create, he doesn't invest in anything of value, he did not create the company from the ground up. The CEO pretty much does nothing

Any words on the safety of women employees of Bell Canada inside it's corporate premises please ? On September 28, 2014; a Team Coordinator of Bell Canada employed in their Household Loyalty dept. by the name of Brian Dionisio in its premises at 50 Eglinton Avenue East, Toronto was ARRESTED AND CHARGED with alleged acts of sexual assault on a female employee (who was part of the team this man managed) inside that Bell Canada premises by Toronto Police. I SALUTE the courage of this lady as it takes immense COURAGE for a woman to go to police & make detailed statements after suffering such an ordeal. This Bell Canada team Coordinator appeared before the Judge/Justice of peace on June 11, 2015 & signed a peace bond & his charges were dropped. Whether this man, Brian Dionisio is still employed with Bell Canada and roams inside their premises is their decision & I have no comments to make on that. Serious debate must be initiated & continued on the safety of women in corporate spaces in Canada.
Why does the government give any money to a multi billion dollar company? There’s no reason to subsidize companies. The free market looks after this. Quit wasting my money.

CBC should be defunded - same as CTV etc- then cut the taxes

Don't worry news anchors, your job is safe.
Please freeze prices and audit Bell's profits vs. wages to ensure that they are supporting rather than draining the economies that they owe their entire existence to. It's time to make wages about the size of the pie, not the size of the opinions of the exploitative.
