WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

This is one of my favourite quotes about democracy and science “There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.” ― Isaac Asimov b 1920 d 1992 , that’s right more than 30 years ago, it was already clear where American reality was heading!

Because it is already telling that something has only claims and vague secret messages in dreams and stuff like that or feeling of belonging in community as evidence for something, it is not convincing when we can demonstrate from the point of psychology, evolution why we would want to belong to group itself rather than be alone. Still, the larger import of his work was theological, in the sense that it contributed toward a partisan religious apologetic This aim showed most famously in Albright's Old Testament work: on William Foxwell Albright

@@CyberBeep_kenshi Do you want something new? Then you can try this: 1) Physicists have shown that the total energy of the universe is zero. 2) The special theory of relativity has shown that energy and mass are equivalent. 3) The general theory of relativity has shown that space, time and matter are so interlinked that there cannot be any spacetime without matter; similarly, there cannot be any matter without spacetime. There is a saying of Einstein in this regard: ‘When forced to summarize the general theory of relativity in one sentence: Time and space and gravitation have no separate existence from matter.’ (Source: Google search) Based on the three above, it can be shown that the universe as a whole is spaceless, timeless, and immaterial. If the total energy of the universe is zero, then its total mass will also be zero because mass and energy are equivalent. Now mass refers to the amount of matter in an inanimate object. So, if the total mass of the universe is zero, then its total matter will also be zero. Here is a quote from scientist Victor J. Stenger: ‘E=mc^2 says matter and energy are the same entity. Since E=0, the total matter of the universe is zero. Zero does not have to come from anything.’ (Source: Positive atheism quotes of Victor J. Stenger) If the total matter of the universe is zero, then we can say that the universe as a whole is immaterial. Again, if the total matter of the universe is zero, its total spacetime will also be zero. That is because according to the general theory of relativity, there cannot be any spacetime without matter. What does it mean that the total spacetime of the universe is zero? That means that the universe as a whole is spaceless and timeless. We have already seen that the universe as a whole is immaterial. Now we have seen that it is also spaceless and timeless. So, we can say that the universe as a whole is spaceless, timeless, and immaterial. Again, the total energy of the universe always remains zero. Therefore, the universe as a whole will always remain spaceless, timeless, and immaterial. That means the universe as a whole does not change at all. As the universe as a whole does not change at all, so we can say that the universe as a whole is spaceless, timeless, changeless, and immaterial. However, the above conclusion will be falsified if one can show in the near or distant future that the total energy of the universe has a non-zero value.

@@himangsusekharpal3484 that's a lot of word play. I.e. if there is a zero sum energy, that is not the same as immaterial. As we are quite literally material. And there is also anti matter. 2 scales can be in balance with stuff on each scale. Energy is also not equal to mass. There is a constant involved and loads of prerequisites before you can say that. My last sentence was this: ' However, the above conclusion will be falsified if one can show in the near or distant future that the total energy of the universe has a non-zero value.' Again, you have written: ' The zero energy universe, i thought that was still hypothetical. We can see a small % of the universe, so not sure if that can ever be proven. I could be wrong. More into biochemistry that physics :)' This shows that you do not know how physicists have arrived at the conclusion that the total energy of the universe is zero. Below is a post by Blargleman The Skeptic 9 months ago in another Atheist Experience comment thread: ' let me help you with the answer to the question: "HOW MUCH ENERGY DOES THE UNIVERSE CONTAIN? Answer: ZERO ENERGY. (Including the matter, dark matter, dark energy and gravitational potential energy) How do were know? CURVATURE. A "zero curvature" universe is one that has a Density Metric equal to the CRITICAL DENSITY as per Friedmann's 1922 solution to the Field Equations of General Relativity. The CRITICAL DENSITY is one where the total energy in the universe is ZERO (adding up energy, matter, dark matter, dark energy and gravitational potential energy). There Friedmann equation also tells us the corollary: if we measure the curvature of the universe, then we can calculate the total energy. We have measured the curvature to an accuracy of ±0.4%, and the answer is: THE UNIVERSE IS FLAT. Therefore, we also know: THE UNIVERSE HAS ZERO TOTAL ENERGY.' I would recommend exploring what other topics the caller believes on faith alone as opposed to seeking out evidence. Does he have it on faith that no vehicle is coming when he's about to cross the street or does he look? Looking is verifying with the intent to form an educated understanding of reality. In that moment he knows that gathering data from the real world is crucial and that believing on faith alone is highly dangerous. Does he drive with his eyes closed because he has faith that the road is clear and bending left ahead and the light is green and there's no one crossing, or does he look? Where else does he apply the non-reasoning that faith is how you tell what's true and evidence can be bent to fit your agenda? Because my agenda is having free roads to cross on and to drive on at all times, and if I can believe it on faith and have it be true just because I say so, then holy fuck I've just found an awesome life exploit. On an unrelated note I believe on faith alone that everybody in the whole world earns a thriving wage and that all minorities are treated with the same respect as their respective hegemonic counterparts and that no one has a hard time in life and that all forms of illness are no more.

@New Hope Enterprises We don't. No point in asking why we do something that we don't do. I mean I can't speak for all atheists on any question other than the one that by definition means we're atheists: we don't believe in a god or gods. So if by "believe by faith" you mean "believe in _something other than a god or gods_ on faith", then I'd rather answer for myself than for the whole demographic of atheists. So let's do this. What do you think I believe on faith?

If the only account of my birth was a book that was written thousands of years after my birth by someone who wasn't there, and I have no proof my mother even exists, then maybe I would begin to doubt it. But my mom was there, my dad was there, the doctor was there, these are all people that definitely exist and I can ask them what happens. And they'll respond in words, not visions or feelings.

I kinda get what the guy is trying to say at the start of the call. The majority of people generally accept they their parents are actually their parents because they are told by the parent (and others) that they are in fact their parents. Now yes we can do DNA tests etc to prove either way. If anything tho his point is more aligned with the fact that most people believe in a god because they are told that a god exists

  • @starfishsystems

Interestingly, we have ample evidence of parents and children being causally related. Absent in vitro generic engineering, we can declare that all individual humans have parents. We have evidence also of adoptive parenting, and of course of unrelated strangers meeting in which neither is a parent, and therefore is not a parent of the other. So, on the question of "is X my parent?" there are several answers that we can be confident are real possibilities. On the question of "does this specified god exists?" we're in a very different position, because we have no evidence that any god ever existed at any time. We have no evidence that the existence of the god in question is a real possibility. Sure, these observations are terribly pedantic, but they're also elementary, and there's no way around them. The caller didn't stand a chance.

Oh yeah the 1st Amendment in science! Just to rebut this point one of the first proponents was a Belgian priest with a PhD in Astrophysics , George Lemaitre, this is what Wikipedia says about it “In 1931, [ George ] Lemaître went further and suggested that the evident expansion of the universe, if projected back in time, meant that the further in the past the smaller the universe was, until at some finite time in the past all the mass of the universe was concentrated into a single point, a "primeval atom" where and when the fabric of time and space came into existence.”

Creation apologists are certain of the myth in Genesis that the earth, universe, everything, etc. is between 6-15 thousand years old. It's impossible and easy to prove that falls in line with the BIG Bang model for the universe. When we look thru a telescope, we're essentially looking back in time. Why? Because that's how long it took whatever we're looking at light to get to our telescope and eyeball. A really cool (I think) thing you can do at night while staring at all the Stars in the sky is you are potentially looking at a ghost. What that means is, it took untold millions of years for that Stars light to reach your eyeball here on earth and that Star may no longer even be there. It's went Super Nova millions of years ago relative to its distance from earth and that light hasn't reached us yet. The human brain can barely comprehend the astronomical distances the known universe contains, not to mention, the time it takes to travel them, even light. That's why cosmologists measure distances in the universe by light speed. For instance. Fun fact. If you were traveling the speed of light, it would still take 4 human years to reach earth's nearest star, Proxima Centauri. Light travels at 186,000mps (miles per second) Think about that for a moment. If you were traveling at 186,000 miles per second (insane speed Einstein said was impossible for humans) it would still take the equivalent of 4 human years to get there. This truth, no doubt makes math cool. We all hated math in school. I just showed you how it's very cool. Therefore, the creation myth in Genesis is impossible. If one thing is wrong in the Bible, and trust me, 98% of it is wrong. It's all wrong. Faith is refusing to believe this data and it not only makes one wrong, it really makes you look bad. Regardless of whether a God is real (which one?) what I've said here is fact as best science knows it. The universe is 13 billion years old. Not sure if anyone told you but "Earth" is in this universe. Earth is over 4 billion years old. 99.9% of all life to ever appear on this planet has went extinct. That also means if a God created all life. It didn't start with humans. I'm sorry if these facts ruin your beliefs in religion but denying it is merely lying to yourself. The evidence is what it is and imo, we should not allow any religion to continue attacking science with lies to the masses. It's just not healthy and why this show gets callers like Stephan who had obviously been lied to himself by clergymen.
