Use the captions option if you find it difficult to understand - words that I'm not compltely sure I've gotten right have (?) after them or ----- if I couldn't understand the word at all.The quality gets better as it goes along. If you want to skip the introduction, go to 1:10.

Everything Mr. Lugosi has to say is of interest and importance to me, even when audio quality makes him difficult to understand clearly in this recording. I didn't opt for captions, though I may on another occasion. Truly a rare treat. I believe Mr. Lugosi became an American citizen but obviously loved his native land of Hungary and was passionate about its retaining or recovering its freedom.

YES! It could be processed without much difficulty and made quite good. Equalization and digital noise suppression would do wonders. Betcha there could be found some admirer of Bela's to do it gratis. Thanks very much for presenting this rare gem, BlackCat5677 ! 'In all right hearts, Bela LIVES-STILL!!' . : .

I wonder what he thought of the terrible Rákosi regime (which we revolted against in 1956), since its head was also involved in the short-lived, but bloody 1919 Hungarian People's Republic. I like Lugosi, but he was the quintessential champagne socialist. He never even visited his post-1945, "democratic" homeland, which says a lot.

I tried to listen to this interview, but became so distracted by the background noises that I stopped listening to it. I would like to hear what Mr. Lugosi has to say. Is there any way to clean this recording up so you wouldn't have to hear static noise that distracts the attention that one hears when trying to listen to this? If you can, I would appreciate it.

I have a doubt and I would like someone to clarify it: why was Béla considered Hungarian if he was born in Lugoj which is in Transylvania? Actually, he was Romanian, wasn't he?

Lugosi was born in 1882, Transylvania only became part of Romania in 1920. Also he was not only Hungarian in the sense of nationality but also ethnically.

Lugoj was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire when he was born, but it's mostly a matter of ethnicity. Hungarian/Magyar isn't just a nationality, it's an ethnic group, distinct for the neighbouring Romanians, Slovenes, Croats, etc..

Interestingly, if you go to Transylvania today, most people will be speaking Hungarian.

Fun fact: Hungary wanted to be an ally before WW2 but the British wasn't willing to talk with the delegation and the Americans told them they do not want to upset Hitler. After WW2 the USA gave Hungary to the Russians. So the USA was actively responsible for Hungary became a National Socialist and later a Communist country. :)

Too bad it took nearly 50 years before a democratic Hungary emerged in Eastern Europe.

Buster Cherry Hungary is a very old world and fifty years isn't so long from that perspective. Look at them now and what Victor Orban has accomplished for the people.

Bela Lugosi, a lifelong Communist, would disagree with you, and certainly would not support orban either. Lugosi was very active in forming the Hungarian Soviet Republic, organizing workers in the revolution and helping nationalizing the film industry of Hungary. The anti-fascist partisans he is supporting in this interview were Communist led, and he is speaking in support of pro-Soviet socialist leader Mihaly Karolyi. He supported the formation of the socialist Hungarian People's Republic after the defeat of the fascists, and regarded this as the triumph of democracy in Hungary, as Communists such as Bela Lugosi only regard a socialist society, where democracy extends to the whole economy, not just politics, as the only true democracy.

Poor Bela. He got type-casted so badly. He was wrong about democraticism. It is destructive and corruptive. Sad.
