Being the Company Officer Doesn't Make You One -- Steven Orusa
Of the countless people who take on various leadership roles in the fire service, how many encounter resistance to their attempts to lead or even hostility, jealousy or unfriendliness. How many find the transition to company officer challenging to say the least? If, being a leader turns out to be a bad experience it is almost always because of the officers own ineffectiveness. The purpose of this presentation is to show you what special skills and methods you must learn to use today's "model" of effective company officer leadership.
A 28-year public safety veteran, Steven Orusa is the Fire Chief for the Fishers Fire Department. He has a bachelor of science in Law Enforcement Administration and his graduate work is in Human Resource Management. He is a published author and is a frequently invited speaker on public safety leadership and development techniques. He has provided analysis on public safety response for USA Today, Fire Chief Magazine, Fire Engineering Magazine, and has also appeared on BBC, MSNBC, Fox News and CNN to provide expert analysis on disaster response.

As a newly appointed officer. I appreciate the points in this video. I have a lot to learn and teach. Hopefully I will become as good an officer, if not better than the ones I have the opportunity to learn from here at our station. Thank you Chief. We all appreciate this tool to build on.
I am a software engineer, I've never even considered being a firefighter.... I'm not sure why I watched this entire thing...
As a newly promoted Captain (2 days ago), this will be something I revisit from time to time.
Just found this talk. It has applications beyond just the fire service and military. Good content.
I have about a year and a half as a captain, and am studying and getting ready to take a captains test for a city department. and this was an insightful speech and got me thinking. It was a really good speech
This talk was exactly the video I was looking for. I have 14 years as a volunteer, 3 of which with my current company, and just got elected as a first time LT with two other young-er guys, who both have time as an officer. Thank you for your advice, I'll take it to heart to help grow my company.
Good lecture. From my view, these are things you learn by doing and having done to you. Hearing them doesn't change things. Mistakes happen. Feelings of the new job still exist. Trying to implement the goals and mission of the company doesn't change them overnight. Its the guy, just like he is saying. And the guy can't change things until he changes for the job. As he said, you aren't ready just because you busted your ass. You change from being wrong, unsuccessfully busting your ass, learning. Same with any promotion. Good lecture. Valid and truthful points. You still gotta run the gauntlet. I wish it was as easy as hearing another person say this.
As a upcoming engineer, this is very good insight. Help me open my eyes to what the beginning of a officer entails. Thanks Chief, man I can listen to this kind of advice all day
