Being Black in Almaty Kazakhstan. The Truth!

Being Black in Almaty Kazakhstan. The Truth!
Francois Marc walks around Almaty, Kazakhstan and interviews people about how it is to be Black in Kazakhstan. Many Black or African Americans ask me if it is okay and safe for Black Americas to travel to Almaty Kazakhstan. As I speak to many Kazakh people about this topic, I hope this video can offer some details and insight for Black Americans looking for information about traveling to Almaty Kazakhstan.
If you are thinking of coming to Almaty Kazakhstan, then think no longer and come! There are amazing things to do in a country that is full of good food, friendly people, and amazing sites, even on the city streets of Almaty. You won't be disappointed if you come to Almaty, Kazakhstan!

I feel like the reason people are chill here regarding race is also because compared to East Asian countries, kazakhs don’t suffer much from colorism. There are light skin toned kazakhs and dark skin toned kazakhs and society accepts both as beautiful, you won’t find skin-bleaching creams like you would in South Korea, China, Thailand etc.

Being a Kazakh, for the first time when I started studying English I looked at the foreign world. We grew up among many nationalities and completely different religions, they all respect each other, but when I found out in America or Europe there are such barriers, it was a shock for me and they sometimes ask Is it because I’m black then, I’m like, What does this mean? because we are all human 🧐🙃

Unfortunately, the pseudoscience concept of race originated in Europe and was transferred to the US. The topics of race, racism, and color discrimination are always headlines in the US. I also believe humans are just humans, but part of being human is finding something, anything to discriminate against. Thanks for the comment.

I would love to go to Kazakhstan after watching this video Francois. It really seems like a very hospitable and beautiful country like you said. From what I learned from my friend from Uzbekistan, he said Kazakhstan people are a very diverse group of people with many different ethnic groups with a variety of European and East Asian features. Even mixed with Mongol tribes, Uralic, and Iranian people. That is why many Kazakhs look "Asians" I guess!! Lastly, I am also from Atlanta Francois. I used to live close to Emory University in DeKalb County and often went to Buckhead Lenox Square Shopping Mall a lot. I am sure you have been there too. I miss Atlanta very much, especially the Southern hospitality and vibe. The autumn weather is so beautiful in Atlanta with leaves changing colors. Do you miss Atlanta too? Enjoy your stay in Kazakhstan and job well done with this video brother!!

Way more family oriented and traditional. This is why they are even more hospitable. The newly rebuilt ancient city of Turkestan is worth a visit. It has a mausoleum of sufi Khoja Yassawi. Many Kazakh Khans are buried there. Shymkent, there is places around the region to visit like Aqmeshit. In Mangystay region there is white mountains and the sea. There is a mosque in a cave. There is a channel called Alkettik where the guy visits Kazakhstan's different regions. Not that he covers everything of course. You can inquire, search and investigate.

Anybody from west, rest assured, can spend some good time here with that x-rate (unfortunate for us ngl)... And yea, we are, perhaps rather curious nation, always open for visitors. I guess it's in our nature to get along with many different cultures... Some people, especially from rural areas may give you an eyeball, but yet again, it is solely cuz they will geniunly be interested in your background and whether you're spending good time traveling. Best of luck on your journey and safe travels!

Great video man, in my experience traveling around Asia you’re seen as a human-being first and judged off of your character rather than skin tone alone. And if you try to speak the language as well that usually always gives you bonus points + Another thing I had to get used to is being known as the American as well 😂 I always think like “oh yeah I guess I am American” We’re so used to being called AFRICAN American and that distinction almost connotes a second class citizen type of feel

To be honest, we are less tolerant than Europeans, so if people start facing bad behaviour from any group of foreigners your ass gonna be kick badly. You can check latest situation in Kyrgyzstan, where some Egyptian students had a fight with Kyrgyz boy, and all look a like students from Pakistan and India get pressured. I remember same with Indian workers in Astana, when they beat up some security guy and half of the city was redy to handle all of them, even if it was only 4 of them who did shit stuff. Kazakhstan has a very huge history of being colonized and oppressed by the Russian government, most than a half of our population has died out of man made famine during those times, all the elite was sent to gulags and our land was used as polygons like Semey and etc. that’s why in that time Kazakhs were minorities on our own land. But we are getting it back, this year Kazakhs officially got more than 71% of the Kazakhstan population and now we are considered to be monoethnic country not multiethnic. Part of that history still shows why we are so against “only russian” menus and places in here

I think you have twisted knowledge in history😅. We never had war (interstate) with russians or mongols (khalkha). We had war with nogai, mogul, uzbek, azeri (kyzylbash), timurids, siberian tatars, and kalmyks with dzunghars. And we had wars not because of women, but because of need for the pastures, trade centers.

We Central Asians or should I say Mongol descends are not racist, extremely religious. We accept people the way they are appearance wise. We only judge people based on their personalities. Love the video.
