BEING ARBËRESHË IN ITALY | SALENTO, PUGLIA | UNIQUE CULTURAL MIX BETWEEN ALBANIA AND ITALY

These Italians are Italians... and more!
We are in the town of San Marzano di San Giuseppe, home to an ethnic group many people have never heard of: the Arbëreshë. It’s an ethnic group that lives all over Southern Italy: mostly in Calabria and Sicilia, but also Puglia, Campania, Molise, Basilicata, and Abruzzo.
In today’s video we visited San Marzano di San Giuseppe, one of largest Arbëreshë communities in Italy. We had a chance to interview some of its residents and hear their personal experiences growing up as Arbëreshë.
We hope you'll enjoy watching this video because we really had a great time traveling to San Marzano and filming this important piece of history for the Arbëreshë community in Italy.
Among the various topics we explored in this video there are: the history of the Arbëreshë people coming from Albania to Southern Italy, the Arbëreshë traditions from different towns, the Arbëreshë presence all over Southern Italy, the Arbëresh language, growing up speaking Arbëresh and learning Italian in school, the history of the Brigante Pizzichicchio, and many more personal stories from our protagonists.
Special thanks to:
- Leonardo, our first guest in the video, who showed us around town, and allowed us to have a special tour of the “Arbëria in miniature”. His passion for this community is truly admirable and we were so happy that we met him. Grazie Leo, ci vediamo presto!
- Lorenzo, one of the most welcoming people you can find in Southern Italy. He made us feel at home from the moment we met, and made sure we found as many contacts as possible for our video. Grande Lorè!
- Antonio, Cosimo, and Tony, for sharing so much of their lives with us - on and off camera! These guys were an incredible resource in terms of personal stories, the history of the Arbëreshë people of Italy, and much more. Tony's art is truly incredible and we recommend you all to visit San Marzano di San Giuseppe even just to see his work - don't miss the Presepe (Nativity Scene) that him and Cosimo set up every year! Also, Cosimo and Tony are the artists behind the "Arbëria in Miniature" so make sure you check it out in person if one day you decide to visit San Marzano di San Giuseppe.
Enjoy!

because they where orthodox greeks... and it was called piana dei greci prior to mussolinis and the popes intervention... they where forced to change confession and have been albanized... the itallians always used Albania as proxy against the Greeks... same as turkey... both want more influence in the eastern mediteranean... this is high chess geopolitics which is going on since the roman era... back in 1870 when the arbaresh people knew what they where they asked greece to accept them back to flee the catholic church opression ... of course greece and kapodistrias accepted them as greeks at that time... thhey who didnt leave accepted to change confession and where brainwashed to a false albanian identity ... Albania didnt exist back then but they where albanized nevertheless. Later italian Nazis used the Albanians and the CHAMS to invade Greece during the WW2 but they lost the war... you Arbaresh need to wake up and start asking some questions to your elders... some of them might know... but most likely those who really know what happened are long gone...

Mussolini is been dead for over 80 years so why are the Arbëreshë still claiming to be from the old Albania and why do they not speak Greek? Can you understand their language, because I can. The problem with the Greeks are the Philhellenes Books.. like this below Page n54 and social condition of the albanians-administrative divisions- Military influence gained by the Albanians during the eighteenth CENTURY-In Greece after the year 1770-Policy of Ali Pasha of Joannina-suliots, the most remarkable tribe of orthodox albanians - Their rise and social condition - Repeatedly attacked by Ali Pasha-Last war-The priest Samuel-Treachery of Suliots-Capitulation of Suu-Fate of Suliots. Page n58 The Hydriots of every rank displayed the peculiar character of the Albanian race. They were proud, insolent, turbulent, and greedy of gain. The primates were jealous and exacting, the people rude and violent. But both possessed some sterling virtues; and they were distinguished from the Greeks by their love of truth, and by the honesty with which they fulfilled their engagements. There were no traders in the Levant who paid more punctually than the merchants, and no sailors who took better care of ship and cargo than the mariners of Hydra. Page n61 Such was the position of the Albanian race in Greece, where its settlements were comparatively modern. In its native regions its political importance and moral influence had been constantly increasing during the latter half of the last century, and it had attained the acme of its power at the commencement of the Greek Revolution. The Albanians Mussulmans were detested by Osmanlees and hated by the Greeks. Their religion was hardly a matter of conscience with the majority. They were less bigoted than the Turks, and less superstitious than the Greeks. Their avarice was, however, insatiable, and for gold an Albanian Mussulman would willingly serve a Christian master, or a Christian Albanian a Mussulman chief, even if the service was to be rendered in deeds of blood. Page n61 The Albanian forms a distinct race among the nations of Europe. They have been supposed by some to be the representatives of the Pelasgians. They call themselves Shkipetar. Some suppose them to have occupied the regions they now inhabit before the days of Homer, and that they are the lineal descendants of the race to which the ancient Epirots and Macedonians belonged as cognate tribes. Alexander the Great must, according to these archaeologists, have spoken an ancient Albanian dialect at his riotous banquets with his Macedonian officers. Page n61 The researches of modern philology have established beyond question that the Albanian language is an early offset from the Sanscrit, and that its grammar was complete at as old a date as the oldest Greek dialect.^ Nearly the same boundary separates the Page n62 Ancient Epirus was filled with Greek colonies, and the Greek race is now more numerous than the Albanian in the region immediately to the north of the Gulf of Arta. But, on the other hand, one-fifth of modern Greece is at present inhabited by Albanian colonists.* The inhabitants of Albania, of the Shkipetar race, consist of two distinct branches-the Gueghs, who dwell to the north of the valley of the Skumbi and the line of the Via Egnatia. That great artery of Koman life now forms a desolate line of separation between the Gueghs and the Tosks. The dialects of these two branches are said not to differ more in their grammar than the Scotch of Ayrshire and the English of Somersetshire, yet a Guegh and a Tosk are unintelligible to one another at their first meeting. Both branches are subdivided into several tribes. Among the Gueghs several Catholic tribes retain their semi-independence, and uphold the Papal supremacy alike against the Mo- Page n68 ' of the Albanian mercenaries. It became then not uncommon, in Greece and Macedonia, to see the children of the proudest Osmanlees dressed in the fustinello, or white kilt of the Tosks. Subsequently, when Veli Pasha, the second son of Ali of Joannina, governed the Morea,^ even young Greeks of rank ventured to assume this dress, particularly when travelling, as it afforded them an opportunity of wearing arms. The Greek armatoli and the Christians employed as police-guards, even in the Morea, also wore this dress; but it was the fame of the Albanians-for the military reputation of the armatoli was then on the decline and that of the Suliots on the ascendant-which induced the f modern Greeks to adopt the Albanian kilt as their ' national costume. It is in consequence of this admiration of Albanianism that the court of King Otho assumes its melo-dramatic aspect, and glitters in tawdry tinsel mimicry of the rich and splendid garb which arrested the attention of Childe Harold in the galleries of the palace of Tepelin; but the calico fustinello hangs round the legs of the Greeks like a paper petticoat, while the white kilt of the Tosk, formed of a strong product of native looms, fell in the graceful folds of antique drapery. archive.org/details/historygreekrev02finlgoog

Ciao! - Davide

Thank you for your deep comment and for understanding the point of the video. Arbëreshë people came to Italy many centuries ago. As you can see from the video, at this point in history they consider themselves Italians (they live in Italy after all, they speak Italian, and many of their everyday life activities are exactly the same as any other Italian person) and Albanians (they come from an area of the Balkans that included modern day Albania and other regions from other Balkan countries, many of them still speak an older version of the Albanian language, and many of their cultural traditions are still tied to their motherland). So yes, it's not fair to just say that they're Italians or Albanians. Their beautiful culture and identity is more complex than that and it's only fair to say that they're Arbëreshë.

@@user-gp5kc9fn4x Ok clown greco-slavs, stop hating. Arberesh, Arvanites, Albanians were the only race willing to fight and they did, unilke greko-slavs who collaborated from the beginning with the Ottomans, even giving their daughters to the Sultans for wives and became their vassals. Arberesh were not cowards, they fought all the way to the end, even when they went over to Italy, they were fighting the Ottomans there, when they tried to pass over and because of Arberesh, they were stopped. It was thanks to Skanderbeg and to the Arberesh/Albanians that Ottomans didn't take over West as well, why Skanderbeg's monuments and busts are being erected all over Europe.. Also, Arvanites of Greece didn't go there at the time of Ottomans, they were there before time and centuries before and the only ones fighting against the Ottomans. As the Greek author historian tell us in his book about the 'History of Athens'. Spiridhon Llambro, in the book: History of the City of Athens! 'The Albanian leader Petros Bua and the "Greek" lord Manuel Kandakuzinos planned an Albanian state in the Peloponnese! The Albanians of More were the only race skilled in arms and lovers of freedom.' 'The last chapter of the history of the Peloponnese. In it, the Albanians, the only race of the peninsula, rebelled in 1453 against the despots, because they still had a love for arms and freedom. Thirty thousand of them fought, first under the leadership of Petros Boua, and then under the ambitious "Greek" ruler Manuel Kandakouzinos, so that their heroic countrymen, Georgios Valtsos, Joannis Spata, would have succeeded as in Albania like Arianitis and Skenderbeg the Great, respectively with the creation of an independent Albanian state in the Peloponnese.' Also, not all Albanians converted and even those who did, still continued to rebel agains the Ottoman Empire and this is recorded history. In all the fake countries around us, there would be non of them without the Albanians and thanks to Albanians. Stop talking out of your annus and start reading more.
