    There is something to be felt when these questions borne out of ignorance and sometimes curiosity are put to us. While we all deal with our challenges differently, it’s important to look at the big picture and the reason you are where you are and make that your purpose. Have a positive workaround for ignorance and curiosity and don’t let it define who you are. If a white person visits a village in Kenya, they are likely to be treated differently because in most cases, it is assumed that they are wealthy and/or important. The list of assumptions is endless and while it has become diluted due to exposure through social media and other channels, I am sure a lot of people still think white people all look the same or live in nice homes or they all speak English. Assumptions, stereotypes and trying to understand the nuances of life is human nature. Think about our tribal stereotypes in Kenya. I recall the things I heard growing up about the Luos and Kamba people and I don’t even want to think about what you heard about the Maasai and other marginal tribes. And let’s be honest, this hasn’t changed as much as we would like because we don’t talk about it as much as we should.

  • @MercyMM

    @MercyMM

    You are very right Rachel, the tribal divisions and stereotypes back home is saddening, really sad, it is the reality we don't want to face or talk about it, I hope in the near future we can all address that big elephant in the room that has been ailing us for so many years, thanks so much for watching, I really appreciate 💖

I remember one told me that my ancestors are from Africa and I told her yes 🤣🤣 proudly 🥰 She is from Iran 🇮🇷 I ask her if she knew her ancestors and she should know where her family was from. You may be surprised how many people in other countries can be ignorant about Australia. I have been asked if Australia is a first world country, do we have our own government, if I go outside my house and hug and play with the kangaroos, yes these are all actual questions I have been asked by people in North and South America. There are people who think Australia is an underdeveloped wilderness of kangaroos, crocodiles and snakes, and everybody lives in the outback.

    I dont think your friend thinks people in africa live in bushes.Africa trips are good for people who enjoy wildlife or to experience the culture..Otherwise when you visit kenya its to experience your family..Australia has beautiful beaches so mombasa is out for him.

    When I am talking to someone I do not have access to google. And I would not stop the chat while I turn on a mobile phone and navigate my way to google. Isn't it far more polite to just ask? If I were talking to you in the street it would be incredibly rude to to stop and look up some obscure fact or other. There is nothing wrong with anyone's accent. It can be a problem though if an accent gets in the way of clear communication. I have had great difficulty trying to understand many African speakers of English. It is rude to ask why someone has an accent, that's true. The shop lady who said "this is very expensive" was probably trying to cave you embarrassment because of a wrong assumption. You should have said something like " I expect that is is expensive, how expensive is it?". I think you take everything too personally. I would calmly say I like my hair long.

    Don't we do the same in Kenya when we see a white person? It's all about education and exposure. We need to learn and understand how to educate them and also learn to know where they coming from. We and they are not mind readers.
