A fantastic performance! An amazing voice! She made it her own. I don't understand why people say: "oh, Barbara does it better; or this is Bernadette Peter's song." They all put their own wonderful stamp on an excellently classic song. Thank Stephen Sondheim.

Nobody sings like LuPone. Bravo.

We all know her signature "LuPone Lip". The quivering of her lip from sheer power, and the lack of tension in her jaw! Has anyone else noticed that when she sings "Vary my days" you can see her actual vocal chord moving due to the lack of tension! It amazes me every time!

There are no words...she is simply the best. I respect her and her talents...she is one in a million! Love her!

The final "Being Alive" is the most powerful version theres ever been.

That final note running right into the tips of her fingers when she closes her hands on the orchestra's last note, that's called control. Whew~

I haven't had the privilege of seeing her in a show, but diva or not, she is a superb performer after decades on the stage. She has one two Tony Awards and been nominated several more times. The best talent seems to be the most criticized: Patti LuPone, Sutton Foster, Bernadette Peters, etc.

Her best performance was at the Sondheim celebration at Carnegie Hall. It was brilliant, although this was awesome too

so, i'm trying to learn this song with a vocal instructor, and everytime i go from "But alone, is alone, not alive. Somebody.." i always run out of air since that's a pretty long note. also, the last Being is pretty high for a baritone... also, i think patti drank too much coffee at the time of this performance, cause she FLEW through that song!

I haven't seen her in person, but in the all the videos I've seen of her, all she seems to do is chew the scenery. A little subtlety never hurts.

Just spent a couple hours listening to Sondheim on here...the men cannot touch the women on this song...Bernadette is great...but Ms Lupone is likely the absolute best, no doubt...when she pulls back at the end just to let it all go, you can't keep from tearing up...!!!

Performed this way -- skipping the first verse -- the song is a single line, expressing a stream of thought from beginning to end without repeating phrases such as "pull me up short," "sit in my chair" and so forth. Every stanza is different -- as ordinary dialog would be -- which adds drama, compels the singer to enunciate clearly, and forces the audience to listen carefully.

@JazzyJane2011 in the show the song starts as a mix of song by bobby and spoken dialog by all the rest of the cast member. when the song is performed solo, it usually starts after the lyrics that contain the other cast interjections

scorpioninpink there is currently a West End revival with a female lead - Rosalie Craig, with LuPone as Joanne :) Craig is absolute phenomenal as Bobbie. Such a different rendition of the song but f*ck me it is absolutely legendary.
