The more of Rob's BTS episodes I watch, the more impressed I am by the amount of world building & story planning he puts in for the campaign! Even when using pre-existing modules, he's clearly adding stuff and thinking 10 steps ahead. Love these insights, Rob!! I was wondering what would’ve happened if they’d not met Yaris, since that encounter provided some pretty significant info. So, it’s cool to know they’d have - likely - managed to still get some crucial deets re: Kelethac, etc… Although, what if they’d picked 3 that avoided both scenarios that would’ve put them in contact with former OotW members? Would you have had Paedric shift things around or decide he’d prefer a certain mission and swap one out? Regarding their quest choices, with a little bit of additional info (esp. re: Dirk) I do think they’d have chosen at least 1 differently. But, the ones they chose seemed to hold more promise for action, so it’s tough to speculate. Fun stuff! Hope we continue to get more of this kind of content! ❤️💙

I’m sure whatever tack you’d have taken, it would’ve been clever! I find it endlessly fascinating & entertaining how much of a campaign like this seems to be finding the balance between carefully structured narrative, subtle guidance & multi-path plotting, versus reactionary, fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants, ‘no rerolls; we die like B.O.B’ chaos. And there’s that nice liminal area in between both extremes that I think you traverse exceptionally well. Sorry… rambling. 🤭 Thanks again for the insight!! 😊

Keeping the unchosen quests moving is great...for a sense of reality. Unlike most video games - where the Eugene's of the game are 'paused' in 1 spot waiting for the 'other side' of the choice to be picked. There is still a little more behind the screen for this as well.... Assuming you have all 6 choices and have decided the outcome IF NOT chosen - what would the "default outcomes" have been for the 3 they DID choose. Dugans Shaft, Westhaven, and Rimming? How would they have eventually made it to the Glacier - based on the clues from the other cities?

Both seem to be potential major arc elements that could shift the current state of Azerim ... for another time.

As sad as the story regarding Dirk is I think it did help drive home to them that their actions have consequences, they had kind of started to understand that with what happened to the sled dogs and a few times when they missed out on stuff for not investigating more, but it really hit home when Rob had Dirk die from the lynch mob. Sad but a true lesson for them, especially as they all chose the towns they did which was done due to the names. Makes them occasionally think to put some more thought into it. Until Bodger does something stupid again.....like going into rage say in a swamp.........yeahhhhhh....nice going pal.

I really want to see how exactly Bodger was able to sniff out the special Item in Dirk's Cabin; plus the idea of stopping a lynch mob they were already a part of for the poor man would have been heavly interesting. I really wonder what information and leads they'd have gotten differently if they never saw Yarris, as well. But perhaps nothing would have changed due to that being the illusion of choice.

Speaking of Dirk (R.I.P.) That tree he was hung from. For it to still exist in such unnaturally harsh conditions (thanks to their local goddess), that tree must have some kind of magical properties too it; right?

Honestly explains a lot - as there was a lot of railroading in the campaign and I thought you were such a good DM so I was surprised. Now I get it!

Something that surprises people when I say it is that railroading gets a much worse rep than it deserves. There's a lot of good to be said for a more railroady kind of DM style.

  • @tpklegends4416

@@RobertHartleyGM Well it's so anti D&D. The game shouldn't be about the DM's story. It's people making a story together. A railroad is great for beginners learning the rules or for DM's who are uncomfortable with improv, but if you just want a railroad, read a book. One example in your own game - you created a portal to another world and had your players roll a d20. Bodger I believe rolled a nat 20 and he was still sucked in. How did he feel during those moment? Totally powerless and irritated and had the feeling that he didn't matter.

@@tpklegends4416 Incorrect. Bodger did not roll a nat20. Also, seems you and I have different understanding of what railroading means.

@@RobertHartleyGM Sorry I must of rolled a nat 1 for my history check. You are right is was a total 20 but I think my point is clear. Railroad vs Sandbox is Mario and sonic vs Borderlands 2 and Skyrim. All great games but would you choose to play Mario with 4 friends or Borderlands 2? It's all about player urgency - making sure the players can do what ever they want and its easy to lose that in a railroad. As a group you all have lots of fun which is the whole point of DND anyway and the reason we all love watching you so much.

You do such a great job Rob. I enjoy watching you work and unravel the story every video and these new behind the scenes videos are awesome! Perhaps Baradun and the Dickheads should’ve gone to Argos instead of Rimming. Pearl and the unicorn wouldn’t have gotten traumatized. If they went to Gin Shandy instead of Westhaven, maybe Bodger would have some dignity left (but then they wouldn’t have come across Yarris). Tough choice!

I would bet they would still go for Yarris Goldhorn, for sure they would try to save Dirk. I'm not sure if they would give up glacier or would they choose search for ingots, but I'm guessing that weapon upgrade would finally win over Grinn story and masks. Unless there was mask shop prepared also in town looking for ingots.
