There are some posts and stuff telling the full story if you Google it, but the full story is actually really horrible and tumblr users who remember that generally feel a deep, collective guilt and regret for what happened (from what I can tell from rejoining tumblr after an 8 year hiatus)

In a friendly tone: I can't believe a person who on hearing about youtube thought "I should use this to talk with my brother" can't stay away from the social internet.

@@lonestarr1490 from my understanding, around 2014 (when TFIOS was reaching peak mainstream recognition and attention) John kind of accidentally became the face of “guys who write manic pixie dream girls” when that is in fact exactly the point he was trying to make: that this trope is harmful. Context of whole books is usually quite important ya know. But basically a bunch of ppl didn’t read his books, took some passages and snippets of things out of context, and decided that Johns books were exemplifying tropes of manic pixie dream girls used for boys’ narratives plots rather than actually trying to commentate and poke holes in those very devices and types of stories. But bc of the sensationalized and meme nature of the social internet, tumblr basically had a hey day with it and it drove John off tumblr, I believe. And finally a disclaimer: this may not be right or totally missing context/details, but this was my understanding of it.

@@lezlezzin Well, it definitely fits some other snippet of information I caught up somewhere, that John once said something along the lines, "the manic pixie dream girl needs to be stabbed in the back and killed" (about Paper Towns, I guess?). Without context, that always appeared to me way harsher and more uncompromising of a stance than I would expect from John, so I suspected there might be more to the story than I was seeing. It's kind of intruiging that this indeed seems to be the case.

@@lonestarr1490 Additionally, there was a tumblr feature where you could edit the text of other people's posts when you reblogged it. This spiraled into people taking John's posts and adding vulgar and inappropriate things into them, which then later on down the line made it seem like John himself wrote those posts. One in particular went pretty viral and was the final straw to his exit, it seemed like. The "edit reblogs" feature was removed from the platform sometime after.

I buy Awesome Coffee to support the coffee growers and the people of Sierra Leone. And I say "the people of" because I can't fathom how building up the medical infrastructure in any way doesn't help the whole community/region by extension.

Because, in the end, it doesn't matter how good the memes are. It just matters that someone cared to create them.

Even before you returned (during the time when various celebrities were joining - and only Lynda Carter was rightfully accepted by the tumblrinas) the story of why you left was circling the webbed site and the overall consensus was that it was horrible and, if you ever returned, that no one was allowed to hurt you again. Your return was so celebrated that it earned multiple Destiel Confession news posts! Welcome back!

Tumblr got frozen in time and as things fell apart around it, it's still only as broken as it used to be

This is possibly the only type of unpaid social media internship I can full-heartedly support

The supreme achievement of my 16 year old self was making a pizza John meme that John reblogged. I believe the pun was “Stop pretending to be me in text posts or I’ll give you a pizza my mind.” Needless to say, this was during the downfall of John’s tumblr experience.

I’m sure someone has mentioned it already, but I think this current fun little activity of John following just a little behind Hank for inspiration (and Hank thus taking on a more varied and experimental breadth of activities being ~pushed~ encouraged by John) is wonderfully metaphorically resonant for their relationship on a broader scale.

I genuinely enjoy tumblr for all its chaos and memes and level of personalization. It’s been lovely to have you there as our fav unpaid intern. The memes are a true delight.

I didn't wake up today thinking I would dust off my Tumblr. And yet, here we are.

This morning I used the last of my Awesome Coffee and thought "oh no, I'll have to go to the store". An hour later I got an email that my Awesome Coffee package would be delivered today. Absolute perfection.

Tumblr was already great (I say this as a tumblr user, so I guess take it with a grain of salt) The thing about Tumblr is that its general userbase has aged with it, without too many new people joining. It's matured a lot as a platform since then. The people are generally older, generally nicer, and generally have better judgement. Also there are a lot of wizards now.

tumblr is my favorite social media platform after youtube- there's a lot of unironic enthusiasm and people discussing things they love. the older user base gives it a much chiller vibe as well- lots of discussion of the nightmare of doing the dishes and how much we love garlic. it's a great time and i'm so glad you're enjoying it as well!

i hope this one ends better than the first round. i am off the social internet save for tumblr now as well, and this was a great way to learn about the decaf. as a cardiac patient this is wonderful news. welcome back, unpaid intern john!

As a longtime tumblrina and nerdfighter I have been delighted by John's return. It was a wonderful endcap to possibly the best year of memeing I've witnessed on the site.

Memetastic! Guys, I recently got back from a trip to Sierra Leone where I visited the eastern part of the country where the one of the hospitals these guys support is located. I cannot stress enough how (dare I say) AWESOME the work these guys are doing there is, and how needed it is in remote parts of SL. My non-profit work wasn't health related but instead trying to find a way to get cocoa farmers paid more. But... we also do the same in coffee (though not yet with Sucafina, darn!).

I love vlogbrothers videos. They often make me think in new ways, sometimes make me cry happy tears and occasionally cause sad tears, but never before today have I laughed until my face hurt. Thanks for sharing!

I'm glad you're back, even if it's just as a coffee company. Goncharov is the ultimate expression of Commit to the Bit, with an unreal amount of collective art creation. In like 3 days, people composed music for a score, people created fanart and wrote hundreds of fan fics and made really, really nerdy film analysis essays, for (and I cannot stress this enough) A THING THAT DID NOT EXIST! It was the most fun I've had on the social internet in a long time.

I love how the name for the decaf coffee acknowledges that it is at least a little bit weird to take a substance and then remove the one ingredient from it that is most closely related to the name of the substance. Decaf coffee truly is a paradox.
