Behind the Scenes at the HCSO: Food Services

Welcome to the first episode of our new series: Behind the Scenes at the HCSO. This episode is about Food Services in the jail, which is responsible for making more than 1,200 meals per day for inmates ... and manages to provide good, nutritious meals for less than $2 per inmate per day. We will be bringing you new episodes every month, so check back for more!

Yeah I remember being Locked up when I was 15-16 in jail. We’d have higher ups come out to look at the facility and assess everything. And in those days we had fucking greasy bbq wings and all this good stuff. As soon as they left back to garbage trash

@@HighlandsCountySheriffsOffice you have got to be kidding. Jail food looks nothing like this. It's all mushed up foods with meat that is labeled " not for human consumption" I'm seriously angered that this video was made making it seem like prisoners are fed well when in reality the food is atrocious. I did 15 days in county and couldn't eat anything except for maybe the cakes. Thank God for canteen.

When I was younger I served time in Chippewa county, Trempeleau county and Wood county WI. All three of them would leave you hungry. So would Eau Clair juvenile detention center. It is awsome to see what you put into making meals. Trempeleau would have good meals but sometimes you wouldn't get fed. I tried to speak out durring a visit. I was taken off camera and threatened by Officer Joe Clark Trempeleau county sheriff's office. He stated if I ever told someone I would be thrown in a hole and never heard from again. I just wanted to say thanks for the effort you put forth in your jobs. It really does help to keep the jail safer. I have not been in any trouble in years. I have kids and take my life and responsibilities sieorus.

I just did 6 days in Vista detention center near San Diego. Breakfast at 4am, lunch at 10am, dinner at 4pm. The only drink served out of the three meals was with breakfast. One little carton of milk. Sometimes they would give you a flavored powder packet to mix with water at lunch or dinner but nothing to mix the powder with. So we saved and rinsed out milk carton from breakfast to fill with water from sink in cell. Problem was, our sink in our cell didn't work. It would literally take 20-30 minutes to fill the little milk carton with water from sink. I understand jail isn't supposed to be the Hilton and I understand it's a punishment but damn, what is this? Bagdad Iraq or something? Luckily I had a cool cell mate who had just received his commissary order when I went it and he shared with me. He was waiting to go to prison. When I got out, first thing I did was put some money on his books. Going to jail during coronavirus sucks ass btw. Only let out of your cell every 48-56 hours for 30 minutes to shower or make a phone call. They preach pandemic safety but not once did we get hand sanitizer or anything. Plus our sink didn't work to even wash our hands. Sergeant said that everyone entering jail is on 14 day quarantine unless you bail out or case dismissed. Luckily my shit was dropped. Merry Christmas everyone

You're telling the truth my brother. I did a few days at Rancho Cucamonga jail them was transferred to Aldelanto up hill. Did 5 months. I tell you our trays wasn't even as half full like they show on this vid. The toilet would get backed up. You ask for some attention and they act like you're animals just because you're behind bars. They treat you with no respect at all. Although, they did give out masks but they wouldn't give you a new one til 2-3 weeks later. They're view on safety and cleanliness is totally BS. Happy you were able to get your charges dropped. Stay Blessed!!!

I can tell you know this is a dog and pony show for the cameras because I've worked in places like this even when the health department comes to inspect they make it look like that's how it is everyday. And it's not the bosses put on a good show, and after they leave, it goes to being half assed. I worked a year as a Food Service Supervisor for Trinity Services Group. These are some of the most hostile work environments. You're sometimes better off having the job of a correction officer. Sometimes, you're understaffed or don't have enough inmates to get the job done. And the inmates like to steal anything they can get.

Humans need food, air, water, clean places, love, and medical care alongside education and training. We need stimulation to grow and rules with understanding. If you take this away from an inmate, you will have issues inside and out. We send them there to be reformed and not tortured, regardless of their crimes. In case you think I am too pro-inmate, a person touched my 8-year-old daughter, and I don't wish him a tortured life. He needs to be reformed to make him understand the rules apply to everyone. My daughter is in therapy and with my help, I don't classify her as a victim of S.A., but a survivor of an act not appropriate for her age. He is still a human being and mistakes are made. If a woman would help him out, he would not be so prone to do these sorts of things. We need understanding and not hate or hurt. Thank you all and love and respect each other, any other way is not worth it.

@@Lcky-gu2gi I was being sarcastic you ding dong. I’ve never it tasted or been in prison, but it sure looks disgusting. A lot of people who have been in jail and prison have not committed a crime, but have been falsely accused, by the way. With your logic there should be no standards regarding food. Bologna is not even healthy for you, by the way, and to be served it to people three times a day will probably increase their risk for cancer. It has nitrates in it and a ton of chemicals.

Normally I'd laugh, however, anytime the media shows, you're going to see a nice trey of quality food and the quantity will be more than sufficient. I'd also add this prison is lucky to have Miss Thomas as the head of the kitchen. I'm sure she orders the best you can get with such a miniscule budget. Jail food is ten times worse than prison food, however, a lot depends on who's running the kitchen. This place lucked out but hopefully she's not in prison too long. She should open her own little food truck when and if she's ever released. The county wouldn't turn a permit application down from her. I think if anything, they'd encourage it. She could even park it out front of the courthouse lol. The food trucks outside those places make bank.

That guard said it right. You feed them enough and make it at least acceptable or you have riot's. The hardest prison in the USA ADX in Florence is supposed to have some of the better food in quantity and quality in the federal system even though all feds follow the same menu's. They don't want food riot's

I was in county for about 2 weeks once and not once was I like worried about the food. There was that one guy though that used a book to heat his lunchmeat. I mean he tore the bookup but putting balogna on ink isn't healthy especially if you put it in the microwave.

One county jail went further by selling prisoners food. It does two things one teaches them a skill plus selling the food to the prison era the county makes money to buy more food the make like pizzas, hamburgers and other foods.

WOW. So Astounding, when the state pays roughing $150 per day for housing an inmate. It only cost $1.87 to feed them, seems like a money pit. Welcome to America, where they get paid to house you and try to spend less to pocket more.

That is a funaminal straight for as the police officer said good food and a healthy portion avoids fights protests, and potential harm to county jail inmates and even correctional officers is a wonderful reality and overall responsible way of enacting a form of violence prevention the said thing is that the majority of all other county jails actually have incompetent nutritionist who are actually more interested in conspiring with jail and medical staff to cause their jail inmate population to remain hungry with for the most part terrible looking and tasting food, whereon said officials objective is to make their jail populations suffer from constant hunger with food with little to no nutritional value, that with a cost of about 10 to 30 dollars to feed each county jail inmate, verses the 180 in the above video for what appears to be 9utstandinf food.

That's because we don't know their crimes. You understand that some of these people, including the cook, may be in there for non violent white collar type offenses right? Not everyone is a violent barbarian. I don't think you'd come across any rational minded person that wouldn't support a victim. But that's not what this video is about.
