Behind The Music | 'Leave Me Alone' by Michael Jackson | the detail.

Ойын-сауық

"Why are all Michael Jackson's best tracks paranoid anthems?" one critic wrote when reviewing Jackson's musical attack on the tabloid press, 'Leave Me Alone'.
A bonus track, that only appeared on the compact-disc version of his 1987 album, 'Bad', had its own official two years later in 1989. Accompanied with a video spectacle that took over 9 months to complete, this is the story behind the inspiration, production and commercial reaction to one of pop history’s most iconic music releases. Michael Jackson’s 1989 hit, ‘Leave Me Alone’.

    Definitely one of the best music videos that Michael Jackson put together. After seeing the whole thing, I think through the video Michael was saying that he felt like an amusement park in the eyes of the press who try to make him look bad.

    I agree with you, @DJDoubleCee. I wouldn’t have blamed Michael for his having felt the way he did about the media. Many of those who had the _nerve_ to call themselves “journalists” were nothing but _LYING,_ opportunistic people who made up stories about him for two main reasons.... _ATTENTION_ from the public, and the _MONEY_ to be made from writing, broadcasting and posting blatant, outright bold-faced _LIES._ Michael had dealt with media speculation about him and his private goings-on throughout his later teenage “post-puberty” years and adult life. He wanted to be known for his _MUSIC,_ mainly, _NOT_ for such irrelevant business that _should_ have been kept private, along with the media’s meddling in and constant guessing about what he (supposedly, _allegedly_ ) did or didn’t do offstage and away from the recording studio, _NOT_ for his seeming “weirdness,” “eccentricities,” and “strangeness” to a media and general public who _REFUSES TO_ understand him and _still FAILS miserably_ at understanding him, _NOT_ for what he, his immediate family members, spouses* (*ex-wives) and _biological_ children of _mixed-race_ descent outwardly and physically looked like, nor for the physical appearance of anyone else, including that of people who just so happened to have been present in the same place at the same time as he was (at any given moment), to be seen around him and photographed _with_ him.

    Interesting how many people connect MJ and his music with themes of "paranoia" without giving it any thought. Since being paranoid is inherently irrational; it implies being suspicious or guarded towards something is an overreaction without an apparent cause. Would anyone reasonably say MJ was irrationally suspicious about the way the media treated him? This whole "paranoia" thing is a fundamental misunderstanding of what was done to him. He was absolutely justified in protecting his privacy and distrusting people, and especially those in the media. @12:00 "Mystery breeds rumour, and if Jackson didn't make a point of being so out of reach and exotic, maybe the public wouldn't want so badly to reshape him into our own personal pet." Wow, just wow. Bring on the victim blaming - "she asked for it by wearing that dress..." Absolutely disgusting. What gives anybody the right to demand that another person acts a certain way, and if they don't, they will be abused? Not to mention the creepy, dehumanising "pet" thing, I mean what? Man, these people really were fucked in the head.

    The media always found a way to gaslight Michael; making him out to be crazy, delusional or whatever else, and whenever he dared to react or question their assumptions they act like he's proving them right that he is 'crazy' or they do a reverse move and label him as paranoid. The sheer amount of mental fuckery and mind-games this man had to deal with from the media and the snakes in his life would drive anyone to insanity and yet he somehow remained level-headed, kind-hearted and rose above the constant BS with grace.

    no disrespect but the press would not have been after him if he hadn't started a game with the press that he would not be able to win. the press started it yes, but Michael made things worse by messing with something he should not have been messing with. the press was the fire and Michael was the fuel and what happens when you add fuel or gas to fire it grows and that is want happed here Michael fueled the press and made things worse. The press is at fault, but Michael does have to take some of that responsibility. both are guilty of messing with each other but that is what stars/celebs do they mess with the press as much as the press messes with them. and they use the press as much as the press uses stars/celebs. But Michael is a victim not denying that. And no doubt the greatest black entertainer of all time. THE KING!!!

Stars use the press as much as the press uses Stars. And if course if I was blaming him, I wouldn't be in a way be supporting him too I love Michael otherwise I would not have said in that comment (But Michael is a victim not denying that), but it is both their faults the press and Michael. Michael is not perfect, but you have to condone his behavior, and his ways of how he did things. yes, the press is at fault but so is Michael I see both sides not one.

    I would love an analysis of the song itself, rather than the video. The chorus, with layers upon layers of Michael Jackson's vocals in call and response echoing off and around each other is the best example of his genius. It's a continuation and evolution of his vocals at the end of "Show You The Way To Go" off 1976's The Jacksons LP. I would LOVE to hear the original multitracks. I bought Bad when it came out on August 31st, 1987 on cassette. That same Christmas, my parents bought me a Sony Discman and of course all of Michael's albums on CD. I was AMAZED and obsessed over this bonus track, next to The Way You Make Me Feel as the best track on the album. Genius!

    As a kid this was one of my ABSOLUTE favorite music videos / Shortfilms ever. Because i had always loved anything stop motion animated and rotoscoped. The sheer creativity and crazy ideas oozing from such productions always showed me that ANYTHING you can imagine is possible to be put into a visual experience. For a young easy to impressed kid like i was THAT was one of the most important and beautiful things and concepts i could ever be exposed to. When Moonwalker came on TV for the first time i already knew about this musicvideo. I was so happy to see it was included in the movie because it really belonged there. LOVED "Moonwalker" so much and still do.

    Same,… kind of. I I wasn’t out and out scared of it like I was of Thriller when I was younger, I found it weird and a little creepy but was fascinated by it. The dogs were uncanny and the overall feel was surreal one thing that didn’t bother me though was the elephant man skeleton, I thought it was cool. I had the single on 7” vinyl as well.

  • @leeannabesser1374

    @leeannabesser1374

    sorry if this will be a long comment but Yes, i agree the press was disgusting because he wanted to be private i get that and they should have respected that but i respect Michael if he wanted to be like that, but it puts pressure on people who are trying to get the truth out there and, in this job, you have to give something up and that would include some of your privacy and since Michael wasn't willing to do that and give up some not all some of his privacy his career will demolish and get destroyed. it is the price of fame Sadly. if you don't respond to rumors they will increase. Michael should have spoken up more and done more otherwise this crap around his legacy wouldn't be around. you have to show people some of who you are otherwise people will come up with all kinds of stories and speculations and with Michael because he didn't show who he is as far as the Michael, we didn't see it allowed people to use him and Patry him in ways that really isn't him and get away with it. i get Michael is private but if Michael had just showed who he really is the people claiming he is a bad man, and a molester wouldn't have any leg to stand on but because Michael didn't it kind of made his legacy a mess. like I said you have to show people who you are especially your fans so they wouldn't feel like they are being fooled. Especially after being accused of child molestation and after that people will start to wonder if they can ever trust the person again especially a celebrity causes the good celebs do need to separate themselves from the bad celebs that are in the industry for the wrong reasons cause the good ones are in it for the right reasons and it can get a little confusing who is in it for the right or wrong reasons sometimes cause the bad ones do the same thing keep their private lives private but for a different reason unlike the good one they keep their private lives private cause they are private. And so, it kind of messes it up for the good ones because they sometimes get confused with the bad ones. I not going to lie i am a little confused because of all the crap surrounding Michaels legacy it gives me a headache trying to figure stuff out but i am not going to give up because i love Michael. LOTS OF LOVE!!! xxooxxoo

    Good video, the detail. I remember seeing this in the cinema as a kid when I went to see Moonwalker and it was interesting but very strange. I've grown to really appreciate it. It would be good to see more behind the scenes footage one day as this video and Speed Demon are underrated tracks from Bad. I think what's easily missed about this short film is that it's a journey inside Michael's head which he himself has to navigate through. It also sounds like "The Way You Make Me Feel". Deserved the Grammy but it would've been better for Moonwalker to have won Best Long Form Video overall while leaving this for the MTV Awards.
