What's the point in adding mud for grip when the pitcher goes out of his way to get a better foreign substance?

That's actually kinda cool they put mud on it when it's new I've only played basketball & football so when it's fresh out the box you just get straight to playing but would wash it if it ever got mud on it lol 😂

Nfl use this same kind of mud too but they remove it after letting set on the ball over night, they also do another whole process too where they put shaving cream on the ball and letting dry then rub it off with a brush, it makes the ball easier to grip that's why the nfl footballs leather is dark but if you get an official nfl game ball from the Wilson website it's bright brown because it's not broken in using this method

Weird they don't have a machine that does this. They have one that cleans them...why not muddy them? Guy must have the strongest hands!

Dead bugs are better for the grip and doesn’t dry out your hands like mud does. I’m going to contact MLB and Rawlings and start selling my secret can to them. You can literally sell anything to anyone if you’re a good salesman.

such an antiquated practice though.... these pitchers are throwing balls in a way pitchers would've never imaged 70 years ago. the standards need to change so that there is an agreed upon level of tak that can be thrown and not scrutinized.

I agree. One crazy idea I've heard is to let the pitches use whatever substances they want for spin rate but then also move the mound back 5 feet to aid the batters.

This is why the basebakks are so slick and why they need the sticky stuff to grip the balls. If they stop doing this maybe the pitchers can grip the ball. dry mud has a slick dry dusty feel this should stop

They use the mud FOR better grip haha. I don’t know if you’ve ever used MLB balls that aren’t muddied up, but they are so slick.

It’s mud, not dirt. So I don’t really see how it would get dusty from the mud.
