I could never tell in the theater which parts of the environment were cgi and which were photographed/on-set/on-location practical stuff. Brilliant work

Given the Gareth Edwards VFX knowledge and good taste in framing/composing, ILM was a perfect fit. It would be great to see and extended clip with some VFX Artist + Supervisors in the back and forth process with Edwards, Greig Fraser and Oren Soffer (DP's) about the scope and dynamics in this simulations. Felt awesome in the cinema (2 times in 1 week).

All the real locations really set this movie apart from so many of today's scifi movies and shows that look like they're just on a sterile set with green screen. Very vfx heavy, lots of on location shooting, relatively small budget for the scale.

the tech will get better but it just worked well for the script being based mostly in asia and asia looking cinematic on its own, even tho not great i personally admire the effort that the artists put for example in marvel movies

I would love to know whether the monkey who detonates the explosive charge on that huge Vehicle (0:34) is CG or real, or a bit of both. The segment I mean was shown at the start of the interview with Gareth Edwards & Jay Cooper.

One question, do you also render this entirely inside Houdini? Because I'm having a really hard time getting velocity attributes to get outside of houdini into e.g. Blender, which you need for Motion Blur. Especially when working with particles that change in count frame by frame. I know, that's particularly the case when working with fluid sims, we see a lot of vdb and ridgid body here, but I'd still like to ask :) So I wonder how large productions houses like yours handle those issues, just make it all in Houdini or do you have ways to get any custom attributes into any software you like ?

I don't think they render a scene entirely, they work with layers as you can see in 0:13, every effect is a layer and probably they only render the effects inside houdini, I guess, afterwards they assably all of the layers, mattepainting and plates in nuke.

@@rano12321 I do hear you. It may be that for this shot they were able to render just the vfx inside of houdini and comp it with the rest if it was made outside. However this approch quickly gets complicated when other layers are effected. e.g. the explosion would show in the reflections of a building. When water hits a surface and changes the reflection channel. I wonder how much of these details have an impact on how and in which software the scene gets built or if they can freely do whatever they want and solve it all in comp.

As a Korean, I find this movie very unpleasant. It is full of images created by mixing white people's prejudices against Asia with old SF. The countryside of many Asian countries is no longer as underdeveloped as depicted in movies. In Asia, where the image of the Vietnam War is still lingering, the image of all Asian countries being forcibly lumped together while ignoring historical and cultural context is disgusting. This is another form of racism. This is one of the forms of racism that white people naturally do, like what Robert Downey Jr. did at this year's Oscars.
