Not terribly difficult if you know when and where to listen. You don't even need to decode the tones, just play them back over the same frequency. :\

One time my friend told me that the world was ending for a joke and at 12:00am I slept walked into my sisters room and screamed that the world was ending but it was a helicopter light 😂

I figured a local for this. What's the fun of causing mayhem If you can't watch, or listen as the case may be? The person will not find it fun if I find out who they are; they will be walking funny after their computer is reset into a suppository configuration.

That was a weird night i remember the power went out about 1030 in Ft. Worth then this happened

Public officials are responsible for setting up a system with apparently minimal safe guards. And for not having an emergency off button. Current way of activating system looked good on paper but needed a hacker to show them the flaws. Better planning needed!

Android Kenobi no there is no username and password all sirens in the USA are set off by radio tones if you go to a siren look at the pole and you will find the radio antenna connected to the controller the way that people get these tones is they wait till they test the sirens and record the tones that remotely activated the sirens over their ham radio then they can just press the talk button and play the sound they recorded

Those are DTMF tones. Some system uses some special tone for "waking up" the siren controller before the DTMF tone is transmitted.

Ding ding ding!! That's the answer right there. It's not rocket science. These DTMF controllers (sounds like phone tones) are usually pretty old, and security wasn't in the designer's mind at the time. Until they update these things with proper (digital) security, anyone with some Googling ability, and a $30 radio from Amazon can potentially set these things off.

if a "bored teenager" can hack a cities siren system, I'm no pro but I think there is a bigger issue here

I remember my parents waking me up. I heard the sirens and asked "what's happening? Is it a tornado?" They said no it's probably a bomb. I freaked out. They said don't worry pack clothes, shoes, and your phone hurry were leaving to Mexico with your cousins. I just said ok and started packing. We went to both my siblings apartments. We were close to the target in town east (my Dallas people know what I'm talking about) close to the mall then we heard that it was not a bomb so we just said oh and went back home

If we were actually being bombed, you wouldn't haven't had time to go to other's houses.

I'm sure they were warned multiple times of this exploit but nobody wanted to spend the money.

Poor babies in the area. Imagine if someone was giving birth when this happened.. major panic.

There is absolutely no way they are going to find who did it unless they root that person out through a bit of social engineering. or if this person tattled to someone of his accomplishment and gets him in trouble. RF frequencies when transmitted and when its over, they have to be triangulated as in finding pirate radio stations while the transmission is active. Once the transmission ceases, if they didn't monitor it then they cannot find it.

I was kicked up awake for HOURS, With my mom hearing a Mansfeild Emergency Siren nearby.

i live in dallas it was annoying so annoying i live like 2 minutes away from a park with a siren

By the way I know the names of the tornado sirens they called federal signal and I saw one in the video also whoever hacked them is the person who knows the codes for the radio password or whatever or pin for it

All of Dallas's city sirens are mainly and most likely radio activated

desoto and Lancaster had this back in march 2 years after the hack

It’s not hard to do. Find the activation frequency. Use a two way radio to transmit to that frequency the signal to set off the sirens. You will need a DTMF decoder to get the DTMF codes used to set off the countywide Sirens. Then, you use a DTMF encoder and recreate the siren activation code. The decoder and encoders are free programs you can download. This isn’t hacking at all. It’s still wrong though.

Only there was no severe weather and it'd be pretty easy to determine that with a quick check. Once the civilians determine that no emergency is present they'd want to contact the agency who operates them, in this case the emergency services. Thus, they had to call 911 to let them know quickly that it was an erroneous activation.
