Behind Closed Doors | Short Film | Panasonic GH5

Фильм және анимация

The following content contains profanity and some graphic violence. Viewer discretion advised.
The cycle that affects those behind closed doors. A short film about domestic violence.
It all started with the idea of giving ourselves 8 weeks to create a short film, with each couple of weeks to spend on different stages of the production process.
With so many other projects happening around the short film, we're so thankful to all those involved that not only made it possible but also so enjoyable to make.

    Hey Karim, thanks for the comment and your channel has some top notch content! This was shot in 4k 10bit at 150/400mbits (some in anamorphic and some not). It's shot at some of the highest quality profiles on the GH5 so it retains a lot more quality and looks crisp. The other side is to have ample amount of lighting so you get good exposure and don't have to bump up the ISO too high. Hope that helps!

  • @MindSociety

    @MindSociety

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thanks! This was shot at 4k 10bit V-log at 25fps and 1/50 shutter speed. ISO never went over 800. As long as you stick to the 180 degree rule (50fps, 1/100 shutter speed etc.) you should be achieving similar motion blur that you see in cinema. As for good lighting, it really does depend on how you set up your lights so I recommend practicing different types of set ups, intensities and moods or try and copy the lighting in your favourite films as practice :)

  • @MindSociety

    @MindSociety

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thanks! Yeah it does get a bit of vignetting at times. Especially with any faster movements as the IBIS will move the sensor around, even when switched off since the sensor is floating, that's usually when it's the most noticeable. 2 ways to bypass it is to crop it a bit in post or add a mask only to the vignetted region and up the brightness a touch and tweak it till it matches. Not the most elegant solutions but it can work if needed.

  • @MindSociety

    @MindSociety

    2 жыл бұрын

    Short answer is yes, 100% totally still worth it. Slightly longer answer is, it really depends on your filming situation. For me, it works really well on tighter budgets where you need to be flexible and quick but still want a great look out of the camera. Obviously low light can be an issue but if you have quick lighting set ups that problem is easily negated.

    Here's what I would have said to Grace if I were a friend of hers and I found out that Harris was beating her... Me: Oh, hi, Grace. How's it going? Grace: Oh, everything's going okay. Me: Just OK? What's with the sunglasses? Grace: Oh, it's nothing really. I just think they look neat on me. Me: Is there something wrong with your eyes? Grace: No! There's nothing wrong with my eyes. Me: Then take off the sunglasses and let me see. Grace removes her sunglasses revealing she has a black eye... Me: Oh my god! How did that happen? Grace: Oh, it's nothing. Me: Was it Harris? Grace: Look, I don't want to talk about it. Me: This has to end. We need to get help. Grace: Look, I'm fine. I don't need any help. Me: Yes, you do! I'm coming with you. In the waiting room at the psychologist's office... Psychologist: (as she comes out of her office) Hello, what can I do for you? Me: We'd like to speak with you. Psycholoist: Oh, sure. Come right in. Me and Grace follow the psychologist into her office... Me: So, I've convinced Grace to come in and talk to you about a situation she's in. Psychologist: I'm proud of you, Grace for having the courage to come in and talk to me. It's OK, sweetie. I know it's hard and what you're going through is not easy. So, why don't you tell me a little bit about what's been going on? Me: (to Grace) You need to tell her the truth about how you got that black eye. Grace: Well, it seems like my husband is always getting so angry about something and we fight a lot. He doesn't even like when I come home late or when I don't get dinner ready on time either. It's like everything I do makes him very angry. Psychologist: What it sounds like so far is that you're experiencing something pretty serious. So, how about I ask you some questions and then we do a little assessment about your marriage? Grace: What kind of questions are they? Psychologist: They're questions about domestic violence. 1. Does your spouse act overly jealous or possessive? 2. Do they set up a specific time when to come home, when to get dinner ready and/or a specific meal they want for dinner? 3. Do they make you feel afraid? 4. Do they call you names, insult or criticize you? 5. Do they use physical means such as hitting, punching or throwing objects to express their anger? James Raydan: Hi! My name is James Raydan and I play Harris the abusive husband in this short film. Abigail King: Hi! My name is Abigail King and I play Grace the battered wife. James Raydan: As a young man, I have strong opinions about how it is to be a man and what it means to be a man and also how to respect a woman regardless of their age. Abigail King: I have a message for anyone who is a victim of domestic violence. Abuse can be taken out in many forms; Physical and Emotional. If you're married to someone who hurts you or doesn't make you feel good about yourself, you need to talk to someone and get help. James Raydan: Being a man doesn't mean using your power to hurt or abuse anyone. Having a successful marriage should be that you give equality between the 2 spouses. Your words should always give value and build strength on your marriage and should never destroy it. Abigail King: Filing for divorce from your abusive spouse isn't always easy but it can be done and you deserve better. Only a couple of shots but due to some limitations and last minute changes, majority was shot using standard lenses but with DIY "anamorfake" filters, a smallHD monitor with a 2:35:1 ratio for framing purposes.

    @@ryansulak Thanks! The Sigma 18-35 and Canon 85mm. The Sigma lens is incredible, as are most of their lenses but we concentrated most on how we lit the scenes as well as shooting in 4k 10bit on the GH5 to achieve the look.

    @@MindSociety oh dope, thx for the reply. Interesting, the Sigma is a sharp lens and usually its that softer look that makes it seem more filmic to be, but lighting is the not-so-secret sauce for sure. Do you need an external recorder for 4k10bit or is it internal?

    Are there any of these films that show female to male domestic abuse? I know it doesn't take place as frequently but it is very real and just as terrible

    I think that's a totally valid perspective and I think there are some films out there that showcase elements of it (honestly, the ones I've seen, it's often portrayed comedically) but it's never a central focus. I can't think of a specific film in general but I'd love to see some recommendations too!

    In abusive relationships there is a level of control the abuser has over their victim and this can include such things like when they can bathe/wash. Her not showering is a representation of one of the ways shes is "fighting" out of the abuse.

    This guy makes his girl breakfast, works all day and all he asks is for her to take a shower and she can't do it. He then buys her a necklace and she doesn't appreciate it. Then she tries to fly to a wedding without him after he tells her they couldn't afford it. She needs to get a job and start treating her man with respect.

    First of all, men like this usually don't ALLOW their women to work. They typically want them at home and under their control. Secondly, for you to see the woman as the problem in this video is concerning as sh*t. She obviously showers... the problem is that he wants her to shower in the part of the day that HE wants...its about control. If she wants to shower after studying first, then who gives a f*ck! Only a sociopath would beat a woman over this. Lastly, when men like this dont find an issue with one thing, theyll find one with another. I was in an abusive relationship just like this and my ex husband always found an issue. I could never make him happy and he would create excuses to hit me. It is NEVER okay to beat a woman. I dont care if she didnt shower for 10 damn days. Abuse is not okay. Seek help please.

    Yes, we know hitting is bad. No one should hit anyone ever. This guys got anger issues and she should leave him if she is being hit. I don’t know how these two ended up together. They’re both subpar partners. The man should go to jail. And I’m hoping the woman is only being so rude because she hates this guy. I the guy wasn’t hitting her, what she’s doing is unacceptable. All I’m saying is she isn’t the golden girl this film is trying to portray her as.
