Behavioral Strategies for ADHD and ODD

When conventional methods of discipline fail to result in the changes you would like to see, it's time to turn to new behavioral strategies for ADHD and ODD. It's really frustrating when a child with attention-deficit disorder and oppositional-defiant disorder continues to make the same mistakes. They may seem to regret their actions, and get upset about the consequences or even fight with you over what they are losing, yet they repeat the same misbehavior. Wash, rinse, and repeat. Time to try something new.

I love the suggestion of merely implying the consequence of the sad puppy, and reminding the child that the consequence exists. I've had so much success as a CBT provider by simply reminding kids that the maladaptive behavior they might present is not an indication of their personality. I try to react with incredulity when kids misbehave, as if their behavior is surprising and alien, and way outside my expectations. Over time, I find that the maladaptive behavior stems when it's reacted to often enough with surprise.

Wow this is great. Now I finally understand what the counselors meant when they said I have to parent in a positive way with positive reinforcement.

I have an 8 year old grandson who’s been diagnosed with ADHD & ODD. The local school district wants to place him in a residential school hundreds of miles away. I am against this option. I am looking for any suggestions where I might get him help locally with counseling and family counseling. I am also most certain he has some degree of autism but has never been diagnosed with it. Any suggestions where I can get help for him and my family would be greatly appreciated. We live near Beaumont Texas in southeast Texas.

See if there are any behavioral therapists in the area. The field is growing very quickly. I myself work with kids with developmental disabilities in a 1:1 basis in a school, and I believe the service is provided by the state.
