BEGONIA CARE - Ep 038

So admittedly I was a little late to the Begonia game. You can say it wasn’t love at first sight, but that’s besides the point, because Begonias are beloved by many, and as I’ve been shown by Steve Rosenbaum of Steve’s Leaves and his Begonia Brigade, begonias can be quite enchanting creatures!
So this week’s episode of Plant One On Me is totally devoted to Begonia care. Thank you to all of those who go bonkers over begonias, because it’s your questions that have inspired this episode, which also happens to be one of those fun Field Trip editions.
As far as links, you can check out Steve’s Leaves at his website here: bit.ly/2A85P5W

I bought a double flowered bogonia from home depot that looked like miniature roses. I suppose they are hybrid and disease prone because after a few days their stems were wilting and turning brown. I was able to rescue some of it by rooting them upstem and replanting them in a unglazed terra cotta pot and keeping it towards the dry side. I feel like they prefer to be slightly to the dry side. But regular begonias seem to be more disease resistant. I'm sure my plant had been raised on an antifungal.

Reigers are often called "Begonia x hiemalis" - the x indicating it is a hybrid. Specifically, that is between wax and tuberous types. I also saw them called "winter flowering Begonias", so Christopher's advice is right on.

Due to a later video w Don Miller, I bought a Benita with a rosy and turqoise bluish leaf. The Begonias were outside and I believe that it was too cold to store it outside. 8 degrees Centigrade. Some of the outer leaves dropped off at the base or appeared very limp when I got home. Trying propagation. They were packaged w stiff paper protection all around, so... couldn't see that problem zone. One side of the plant is OK. Strong stems and fair sized leaves. I like it a lot but don't have much luck with Rexes. Maybe it is too cold, already, in the truck from Holland. 🤔😐. I hope to save this pretty creation of Mr. Miller and Co.. .Got a video on intensive care for Begonias?

  • @johnjhill3

It was nice to put a face to the reputation! I'm having trouble with the Begonias I got from Steve a few weeks ago. I got the rex "Fireworks" which seemed so prominent in this video, and three of the "upright rhizomatous" type. They were so gorgeous when I got them but it has been hard to keep them going. Maybe I'm having trouble developing a good sense of proper watering. Steve sends out the biggest plants you can imagine in a four inch pot. He puts other shippers to shame and redefines "four inch pot." But that was my first problem. The pots dried out do quickly that they all lost several leaves. As he said here, let the soil dry out a bit, but i missed that point by a few minutes, I think. So I let them all sit in a pan of water for a good soak, to recover. Another mistake, maybe? Leaves continued to drop. For the last three days they seem to have stabilized, but they look shabby under my care. I have had several cane Begonias - they seem so easy for me. But these hybrids make me feel like a bad parent. Is there any hope for me and my babies?

Hi Frank. As with any houseplant, it is a matter of understanding what the plant likes. After all, many of these plants, or their species relatives, thrive just fine in their native habitats without any human care. I could write a book just addressing what you have brought up but I will try to keep it brief here. BTW, thank you for your kind words. Not keeping up with watering while your plants were adjusting to their new surroundings has created a difficult situation. It is possible that you let them get so dry that some of the roots died. If that is the case then there may be too many leaves for the remaining roots to support. The danger at that point is keeping the plant too wet which can cause the roots that are still alive to rot. What you want to do is still let the soil surface dry and then water. If you are attentive to the watering at this stage, and careful not to over water, the plant can grow some new roots and need less babying.

Pebble trays, like daily misting, do not effectively increase humidity and should not be recommended as solutions to this problem. They have been debunked yet persist as common myths in the hobby. There is data out there on this but you can also test it for yourself with a few cheap humidity meters. You want either a mostly enclosed terrarium that can keep the humidity up, or just ran a humidifier if your plants aren't getting enough humidity. In my area, this is mostly only an issue during winter when central heating is on, and indoor humidity drops below 35%.

The cuttings took and i have it in the same bright North location that I had the mother plant, but its well over almost 2 months and no bloom. This summer with almost daily rain showers, there is no way that i could let the soil dry out in between like Steve suggested. Is it lack of Fertilizer? If so, how often and which one please?

I think there would have to be several. First, there are so many commercial (store bought) potting *mediums*, some for various purposes. Then there are home-mixed *mediums*. Fans of so many different plant types have so many favored recipes it could take an epoch to sort thru them. What kind of plant are you considering potting up?
