Got a small outside front of house wall to render, and this has given me the confidence to get up Screwfix, buy a paddle and mix first coat, wet,scratch, second coat, then sponge it all off....sit back then realise, I've made an absolute mess of it...and get a pro in. No seriously, great guide, let's give it a go.

This is so good. You are a great teacher, film maker and craftsman. Just brilliant. An eye for detail and no rushing the stages. Probably the best instruction video I've seen. Also makes me want to get out and start the job. Thank you so much. Inspirational!

I'm a brickie learning rendering and skimming. What I say to labourers is to stretch the water when mixing. If the sand is sopping then no water needs adding just plasticiser until it dries up when cement is added then add water only if it turns and no moisture is getting through the mix. I love watching your video, I've learnt loads mate keep up the good work.

Nice job and very good video. Very well explained. I've been doing it for 56 years. I've been doing scratch coat last few days, I always had lads labouring for me but now I am pebbling an extension on my own place and I've got no labourer...its knackering me! Keep up the good work

Your the best I've seen for explaining everything

Fantastic video and the expansion strip wow that's so important to stop cracks, I mean who wants to do the job twice. So much detail and a nice smooth finish. Normally I don't like this finish of a lot of render I see as its soooooo grainy. I did like a 3hr render workshop yearssss ago, I remember the foam float (different to yours) with a grainy finish (yes same from instructor lol) I don't remember the sponge. Heres hoping I do a good job

Top video mate, thank you. I’m in the middle of building a small garden room and will eventually be rendering it. I’d love to have a rough idea how much sand/cement to order. It’ll be roughly 3 metres long on each of the 4 sides and 2.25 metres high

Absolutely love the videos. You've inspired us to try some DIY rendering next week and we've ordered some plastering sand and cement to start us off. We are going to follow your mix 4:1 for the scratch. The problem I'm having is working out how much sand and cement we'll need for 60sqm. Great videos. I'm rendering with sand and cement for the first time soon. It's a long wavy wall that I built. I plan to split the render top and bottom with a textured tile between stop beads. Any suggestions for sponging/finishing?

Love the vidoe. How would you go about plastering an external block wall that has been painted a few times over the years with masonry paint?

Loved watching this vid, super informative! Just had a mud kitchen built outdoors and the render not only cracked and blew but looked mega thin and patchy. Builder re did it but it's just as bad more patches more discolored areas and blown. Looking under the the render that's come away the base looks level no scratches could there be a specific reason for this. The overhaul render only looks to be around 2mm deep, am I right in thinking this is even worse than I 1st thought? Any advice welcome xx

Blinding vid bruv very informative and of course really nice work. Now me not being a plasterer I once a long time ago tried rendering a four foot high garden wall. It was about as long as the wall in your vid. Now I used Sharp sand four to one mix and it took me forever to get it on the wall it was heavy to work with and it was forever falling off. I know now that I tried doing it all in one coat😫 Anyway at the time I was told it was because I didn’t seal the wall first with PVA. This I now know didn’t matter because the I applied it all wrong. Needless to say we got a plasterer in to sort it. Anyway I’d like to know from you if you ever use PVA to seal the block walls first? As in this vid you seemed to just apply the scratch coat straight on. Thanks again for a great vid.

For scratching I do up and down too after the across. You can really dose it with the hose and it throws off the water it dosnt need

Absolute beginner here. Obviously it takes patience, skill, experience, and muscle. You make using the trowel look easy, for sure it takes years of practice. Wish me luck! Ill have to send you pictures of the progress on my projects.

Just finished rendering a garden wall after watching this, thanks for the tipa. If you use lime in the top coat can you paint it with exterior masonry paint?

Cracking content matey, spot on. I have been plastering a while but have never done large amounts of rendering. Only small garden walls etc. I have a dilemma though. What happens when you are rendering up to a neighboring wall. Do I just stop bead vertically down the wall to split my side from the guys next door. I have to get my old render off the wall too which is a pain but has to be done as it is ancient. Have to be careful though as would not want to upset the guys wall next door if at all possible. Any advice would be tremendous matey.

Thanks for vids, I am planning on rendering brickwork on my house. Grout lines are at least 10mm deep. Do I try to fill these with my scratch coat? Also where did you get your skimmer from, I can only find 1200mm online. Thanks mate,

Awesome videos, near perfection... I have 1 question though. Are you using plastic cement or regular portland cement?

Very good detail. I have a fine rendered wall leading down my driveway. There is a horizontal 5mm wide crack in the wall. I am keen to do the repair. I would appreciate if your could provide your comments on the following: 1. Do I need to do a scratch coat. Or can I simply fill in the crack with say cornice cement. Prime it with an undercoat and then put a fine render over it. 2. Alternatively fill the gap with your scratch coat mix and then apply the fine render

Hi blaine, As always a brilliant video put together really well. Can i just ask, what size corner/stop beads do you use here. Baring in mind the flexi separating bead is 10mm. If you had a 20mm corner bead could you not use the separating bead or would you just plum it in. Thanks Blaine, your videos have made me in the plastering game.

I'm a chippy but have a go at anything.. it was a scratch coat and pebble dash job, my god did I struggle at times to get the consistency just right so I could apply the shingle, it was my 1st go ever and 2nd time I have ever rendered anything.. I did a mtr square at a time and certain areas would dry out and not let the shingle adhere whilst others we're to wet still despite using a waterproofer in the scratch and SBR in both coats.. my mix was 5:1:1 sand, cement & lime.. I couldn't even get on with the Derby to flatten off so I did it all freehand. Looks alright but blimin hard going 👍

I'm in the US I'm a mason here been doing it for 30 plus years now I've done quite a bit of stucco also my question is for your scratch coat do you use a Portland base first or is it a Masonry mix??? I totally agree with you about using lime with the top coat it gives it a butter feel and makes it easier to apply. You are a very good teacher and it's easy to follow your videos I'm impressed with your talent I'm looking forward to seeing your next video

In America, we use the "Go Devil". You can use it in the scratch coat and in the final coat. It's a massive time saver and use less strength along with applying massive amounts of mud, (Render). Cheers Brother.

Are you familiar with Custom Float? sold in the US mostly for tile applications, but the mixture is 5 to 1 to .5(sand to cement to lime). I'm going over some rugged interior brick. Do you think it would work for my main coat?
