Beginners Concrete Sidewalk - Do It Yourself (Form, Pour, Finish)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

#everythingaboutconcrete #concretesidewalk #mikedayconcrete
In this video I'm showing you how I make a concrete sidewalk that's 20' x 4' x 8". I think this is the perfect beginners concrete sidewalk if you're thinking of installing a concrete walkway and want to do it yourself.
This is small enough so you can form, pour and finish the concrete pretty easily if you follow the same steps that I take to install this sidewalk.
The first step is to get your forms set up, pinned and set to grade.
The second step is to install your reinforcement.
The third step is to pour the concrete, level it, and bull float it smooth.
The fourth step is to mag float and cut your joints and do your edging.
The fifth step is to broom finish the surface.
That's a pretty easy diy concrete sidewalk for beginners.
If you want to learn more about how to form, pour, and finish concrete, then check out The Concrete Underground below.

    In Minnesota, we use 8" concrete for commercial sidewalks in downtown Minneapolis. In most cases we use 3.5" of sidewalks and 6" for for pedestrian crossing landing areas. We use 6" for driveways as well.

    Thank you for the informative video. I've poured and formed very little concrete in my life. Friend of mine decades ago mixed his own Portland cement in a wheelbarrow and poured a walkway/driveway about 80 feet long to his house. Did a great job, and I always wanted to be able to do it. There's a lot that needs done at my house now. Just various projects. Can't afford a truck to bring it each time, so I might find a used mixer somewhere. Idk how in the world my friend was able to mix and pour his that fast out of a wheelbarrow.

    A well-pounded ground filled with gravel and small rocks prevents it from sinking. This gives a better cushion and protects the concrete from easily cracking. No matter how thick the concrete when the ground is poorly prepared, when they sink from different places, the concrete also starts sinking and cracking.

Specifically Portland with air, fiber, water reducer and densifier. How much to add etc. I've done it with rapid set and concrete pharmacy products from the depot but would like to see with portland cause my preliminary experimenting seem to show a difference in workability etc. An idea for the future maybe?

    I'm learning about this right now on my own. I was wondering, at 1:15 Is the board just pushed with side of house and a stake holding it? The reason I ask is, I tried something similar like this and my board moved. Just wonder how you keep it secure. I notice that people use stakes with drill holes. So looking for those but seems to only come in certain sizes. Do they make 3ft stakes with drill holes? I'm making a 2ft high retaining wall in my backyard.

    I was told The foam is to allow the concrete to move incase the land shifts. Might be wrong. But if they were right. What was the point in this case since you added rebar into the wall wouldn’t it crack if the piece poured was to shift?

  • @psidvicious

    @psidvicious

    3 жыл бұрын

    The drilled rebar pins are just to prevent up or down movement due to freeze/thaw cycles (‘heaving’). Some jobs require smooth dowels that are greased or even sleeved before pouring. The foam is to prevent any possible bond between the frost wall and the new concrete. I’m glad Mike uses that super thin foam bcz the 1/2” stuff gets really ugly over time, as it deteriorates.

  • @GerardoGonzalez-jc1je

    @@psidvicious Bear with me I’m new so my questions are probably retarted haha. so the foam is to prevent the new cement to bond to the old one? Why wouldn’t they want it bonded together? why would they put rebar from the old one to the new one. Wouldn’t that be the same as bonding in a way? I do see how they use rebar like you said to prevent up and down movement. I’m confused.

  • @psidvicious

    @psidvicious

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@GerardoGonzalez-jc1je When an ‘old’ concrete finish is smooth it’s next to impossible to get new concrete to bond to it. It’s called a cold joint. It may ‘stick’ a bit here and there, but for anything structural, a cold joint is always avoided. Personally, I would rather have not put in any expansion material at all, but it may have been specified to use it. The engineer that they were doing this for probably just wanted a little extra insurance that there was no bond between the new and old concretes, so as not to put any unwanted stresses where the design didn’t allow for them.
