Great tutorial! I'm a hobbyist with a passion for shooting people social dancing (salsa, bachata) indoors (my specialty/peculiarity: no flash, no posing, getting closeup with a 105 mm or 135 mm lens), so I love to watch videos like this discussing all aspects of low light, no-flash photography. @@justinlaurens I'm learning, but have come far thanks to all of these fantastic tutorials posted by artists like you. Have been doing this for fun for the past 4 years or so, as I am also a passionate dancer. I don't use Instagram much, (I post mainly in Facebook public albums) but for a quick look, my IG is "sisfoto". The challenge with what I do is that it is not posed, movement is quick, lighting is iffy, and I have to keep a reasonably high shutter speed (so, super high ISO). :)

This makes me want to subscribe to your Patreon! Also because I do my work from natural light so all these tips are gold. On a side note the second painting was the artwork of Vermeer and he just like Rembrandt is definitely an amazing example of using windows as a light source.

Awesome video, i liked it. subbed and notification bell on, sad you have so few videos My 1st question: How do you cope if the weather is bad and the client still ordered a shoot? Or the weather gets suddenly rly bad midway through your travel to the location? In winter the weather can be rly bad. Do you increase the iso or play with shutter speed? 2nd question What about outside? Do you shoot outside? A video on how you manage the shoot would be awesome 3rd Lightroom is messing the raw files of the sony so bad, introduces green and yellow wand is much darker while also making the skin colour go nuts. Ever tried capture one? The "embeded look" or whatever it's called, looks good but then it goes berserk xD

Do you think r6 dynamic range is fine and how about the lens, should I consider sigma art 50 1.4 or ramron will serve the purpose. Money is not an issue but yes I can't go for expensive rf lenses because it will not justify the price I will pay. Kindly advise thanks in advance.

My pleasure 😊 Glad it was helpful. Yes that is a great setup, you should be able to capture some good images with that. Now, I'd recommend really learning how to edit & retouch your photos well...that is an important next step!

Hey Justin - a very interesting video, especially for a newbie like myself. If I can just ask a question at 2:15 the photo on the right is very dark and I believe a Raw file. So to get it to the image on the left, you must have done some major work to get that look. What software did you use please. Peter.

Adjusting ISO in camera is no different than adjusting brightness in post. Unless your DSLR is really old, pushing the ISO up several hundred should not be an issue. It's part of why modern DSLR cameras are so expensive. You're paying for that feature. In film cameras, the ISO was how sensitive the film was to light. You cannot adjust how sensitive your sensor is to light. All ISO does in your camera is digitally enhance the light in your pictures, much like your software does in post. You can experiment with this, take two pictures and change nothing besides the ISO and then match them in post. It makes no sense to use such a low ISO setting in this picture. The days of sticking to 100 ISO in low light are long gone.
