im doing a similar thing! i will just do a smaller version of the main part until its the size i want, then fold in half, and sew the sides together (or you can do the bottom and sides bit like the tote) then sew on a zipper!! i have also used hot glue with zippers and crochet, lots of good youtube tutorials
