UPDATE FOR ANYONE WATCHING THIS IN 2021: 1) "NVSE" has been updated for the first time in a long time, instead now you should be using xNVSE, you can just install it as you would NVSE and tell it it's ok to replace any files. (You'll see why in the next update) 2) The "Unofficial patch NVSE" has been replaced with "Unofficial Patch NVSE Plus" which now requires JIP LN NVSE Plugin, JohnnyGuitarNVSE and xNVSE (This is why you now want xNVSE rather than the old NVSE). 3) You'll notice that a lot of mods on the nexus now state that xNVSE is required, again this is why you will want that instead of NVSE (See (1)). For now that is all I could find regarding this part of the guide, I will either edit this as I go or just post a new comment on the next part of the guide.

@@tylernewcomer6345 however I will say, I recommend Mod organiser 2 instead of vortex. If you really must know I used a guide called “Viva New Vegas” along with these videos to mod properly. I used the former up to the tweaks section and then I used everything from this guide. Of course you should compare and contrast between this and the other b4 installing anything tho.

I would advise anyone watching this, now or later, to stick to what Gopher is recommending here. Avoid the temptation to throw a load of mods at New Vegas and hope they stick. Many years back, on Gopher's first New Vegas tutorial series, I watched one episode, learned how to install mods, and thought I knew everything. The end result, some 150 plugins later, was a completely broken game that CTD'd on startup, or froze every couple of minutes. I had to manually uninstall and reinstall hundreds of mods to find the culprit, still got CTDs, and eventually had to reinstall the entire game. If this is your first time modding, Gopher will show you the right way to install mods, and his tutorials are super easy to follow. Don't be me and charge in like an idiot.

Snake Doctor I did that as well and on my dads old laptop which he gave to me😂😂 I got mod hungry and got a lot of mods alchestbreach uses so Jerry Mcghoul Berry, death claw companion, willow and many more sadly the game couldn’t handle it all on that laptop and I couldn’t do the DLCs b/c my game would crash when I loaded into big mtn, Zion, etc but w/ those mods a lot of viruses popped up b/c I didn’t unzip a lot of the files then I got a new laptop and he wanted his old one back then he got a new one and now I have that virus laptop again b/c my laptop was for college. And now I play Sims 3. New Vegas is still on my steam library but I had to scrap the mod manager after it became outdated.

Best advice I could add to this is stick to things that very well-known, accomplished mod authors suggest. Look at recommended modlists to go along with the big ones like Tale of Two Wastelands or New California. Those mod authors tend to include a very tight list of recommended mods, just a handful, and they know the game's engine well enough that they have a good idea of what will play nicely with it and what won't.

The implication that Vortex is the default mod manager to use is a poor one, sorry to say. He knows better. Mod Organizer 2 is indispensable. I currently use over 700 mods, including some 300 ESPs merged down to around 135. I have **no** crashes, **period.** There are a few tricks to this. 1: Using New Vegas Anti Crash, as well as ENBoost or ENB. 2. Using the correct stutter remover, which Tick Fix is not. 3: Using the correct settings with New Vegas Stutter Remover-very important on Windows 10, as it means the difference between the complete stability I enjoy and guaranteed crashes every 5 to 10 minutes. 4: Checking the entire load order in Xedit and vetting, gauging and possibly sniping any incompatibilities you spot between your mods. These are a fact of life, because mod authors do not have the ability or care to ensure what they're providing works perfectly with every single other mod out there. You do this with every new mod you install, too. Again I stress: **No crashes, period.** The game closes when I'm tired of playing, and only then.

My main issue was discovering too late that there was a mod limit up to 140. That’s when I had to go through mod merging which took my days to figure it out. Afterward, I took a break, and after discovering that the Witcher 3 had a mod limit remove mod, I figured that the same could be done to Fallout NV, so I waited, bide my time, and then that day arrived. With the original mod limit “removed”, it’s been extended to 255. So far I have 160 plugins of mods (with some plugins containing 10 mods in one plugin) and is steadily going up strong with no lag, stutter, crash, input delays, long loading, etc.

Sorry about the re-upload. Roy Batty found a small error and we felt it was important to fix it. A big thanks to him for being my technical support for these videos :)

@@ghostnoodle9721 The thing is, Bethesda is still capable of making amazing games. Fallout 4 was a really good game in a lot of ways, but the story wasn't great. And now their engine is beginning to show its age. I'd love for them to create a brand new engine from the ground up because they could do so much more. Imagine Skyrim on a modern engine where towns can hold hundreds of people instead of the 20 we see occasionally. Or cities that are actual cities. And with a new writing team on board, I can see them making potentially great stories, but they need to see Fallout the way its creators did.

@@ghostnoodle9721 Bethesda does make amazing games. Fallout 3 for example is a Bethesda games that in many different ways is better than New Vegas in my opinion. Fallout 4 wasn't as good story wise, but exploration and combat was at its peak. Fallout 76 is different so I understand the hate that it gets, but it's actually quite fun if you really get into it. If you like classic Fallout story lines however the Wastelanders DLC has done just that by adding new quests involving human NPC's. Fallout 76 also has NCR Ranger Armor for those who care

I like how the serious mods have images that ironically imply that it is a joke mod. Also, I love how carefully you went through everything. The thing that I hate about standard tutorials is the fact that the person doing the tutorial assumes you already know too many things.

Oh also, would absolutely recommend User Interface Organiser as a "default" mod you install when making a new game. It also massively improves the performance and speed of VATS

I do consider UIO and MCM to both be absolutely essential and did consider putting them in the first video, but I wanted to cover VUI+ and Darnified UI before MCM (because of how it affects installing that mod), so in the end I just figured keep them for part 2, which focuses on the UI.

A "default" modslist would quickly become too long if you asked me. Like NVTF and OneTweak.

So I just gotta say big thanks for this series here. My game started randomly crashing super often tonight, and I had heard NV wasn't super stable on PC. Had no idea where to go to fix it, or to even begin modding the game in general. This kind of a guide is super easy to follow along with and is much appreciated.

I'm gonna pretend I saw the stutter, and I'm now happy thats it's fixed thanks!

Brilliant! Was thinking of replaying through this game and knew I was gonna need a refresher course in modding. Years back I used your original NV tutorials, so I figured they may be a bit out of date and decided to search for "New Vegas Modding 2020," only to find this video series. Much appreciated for this guide. Just dived into New Vegas again and for the first time on PC (previously on PS3) and knew immediately I would want some mods, both just to pretty up the game and just general QoL improvements. This was a sensational guide, really helped me get the basics down as well as a sense of where everything goes. Looking on Nexus I was seeing so many mods that listed "requires this mod" first to work and now I think I have a great jumping off point to work with. Cheers for the work you put into this, very nicely presented and easy to follow.

If we ever get a Fallout 3, Fallout 4, and Skyrim beginner's guide that would be amazing. This is the most in depth and comprehensive video I have ever watched for modding any game. Gopher has always the been the best at these sorts of things and will forever be.

---- PSA For people following this guide ---- First of all this guide is awesome! But if you're like me you always tend to run into little things here and there that don't quite match up with what the guide is doing and encounter problems of your own. I personally ran into a problem at Part 3 of Gophers guide here where I installed the WMIM mod and then went to test the weapons. When I opened the weapons tab on my pip boy and moused over any weapon in my inventory the game would freeze and crash. After a few painstaking hours, I've found out that the mod that is causing these crashes with the pip boy is the Unofficial Patch NVSE mod. If you're following this guide in 2021, you'll notice that the link in this video tells you that the mod no longer exists, it got merged with another mod and is now Unofficial Patch NVSE Plus. In order to install this new mod you also need to install another mod called JohnnyGuitar NVSE. One of these two mods, or a combination of both of them, was causing my game to crash when trying to select weapons. I'm not sure exactly which files are in conflict or what the exact problem is, but I use NMM and for me I had to just not install the Unofficial Patch NVSE mod, or else I'd crash. Just a heads up for anyone who encounters that issue.

Thank you so much for uploading this series, it's hard to find good information on these games as it pertains to Vortex. This made my life a lot easier on my journey towards a stable modded playthrough of Fallout 3.

Great to see this update Gopher! A word to any newcomers who are just getting into to modding. Listen to Gopher's advice and take your time. Gopher does some of the absolute best tutorials for dummies (like me). Also, getting your game stable and less buggy is ESSENTIAL. New Vegas is an absolutely brilliant game but in vanilla version it's less stable that a psychiatric ward and has more bugs than a swamp located in the basement of a haunted house. Stability is king when it comes to this game, afterwards you can get to the good stuff.

I love this video. No blasted music, a clear, slow voice with very helpful images.

Great video Gopher! Don't forget however, that NVTF also does more than fix the stutter problem. It also includes major fixes to cell load stutter and hopefully will improve performance across the board for numerous different elements of the game. Also includes a High FPS fix so you can play at a high FPS without having to worry about havok going all funky.

@@DarkN3r0 The problem is there's no specificity, so unless it's obvious to you, you just don't know what's being talked about. It would be fairly trivial to demonstrate to anyone exactly what he means, but he couldn't be bothered. If you look at the edge of a building or something... some stable point as he moves... you'll see that, before, everything was kind of moving in little jumps, like it was being held back and then suddenly leaps forward just a tiny bit, over and over. Afterwards, this doesn't happen. Things move smoothly

This is still the best guide I've seen for getting started in New Vegas. Thanks for making such a high quality and detailed tutorial!

Well.. I'm a veteran, and I don't know that I'm terminally curious, as such. But... FNV is what I consider one of my "comfort games." Like other games in this category, it has a familiar coziness to it, and as you have been told many times, Gopher, you have a calming voice. I'm doing about as well as anyone could be right now, but even so a calming voice and a "comfort game" is a pretty good combination, so cheers. :)

With me it's the opposite, I get so frustrated when I try to load the game and it suddenly starts to ctd while it was working fine before. Or after I reach a certain point in the fame and every time I load into another world space the game CTD's and now I have to go through 250 mods disabling, running the game, enabling, disabling the next mod, etc.

I just the other day started modding and im rusty as HELL, so you have no idea how happy I was to see this in my feed!

i used to watch your videos all the time back in the day! i got the urge to go back and see if you did any updated videos and let me just say this is the only thing that made me happy today so thank you! i hope you never quit :)

About a year ago I tried following a video to start modding NV and I completely messed it up and got confused. With this video I finally got it, its so smooth now! Thank you for the easy to follow video my man, now its time to do my 10th playthrough with mods.

So, this is my first time ever modding before, and when I downloaded Vortex, it auto downloaded NVSE for me, and also created that folder automatically with the text document. Amazing :')

if vortex doesnt make a plugins folder in your fnv folder (the folder, where you create the .ini), and doesnt put the mods in this folder, just reinstall vortex, but choose normal installation, with the standard installation path (bad english sry)

How I love this channel. I did not had much free time to play games, so modding was forgotten at all for the time being. And right now when i have some time to mod, I immediately remember Gopher and his amazing skyrim tutorial, which showed me new world of gaming. Then i check his channel for FNV and bam new 2020 tutorial, first i thought what an amazing fellow. Second i start watching tutorial and i hear him, his soothing voice, that glamouring accent, detailed descriptions, then the world and its problems dissapears, I am relaxed and drowned in gaming world, feeling ten years younger.

Im pretty knew to modding stuff, pretty knew to the world actually, and ive tried modding so many times but always fail because everything flies by my smooth brain. you made it so easy for me I actually understood what to do and I can have a modded fallout new vegas. Thank you for explaining so well.

This came up in my recommended while I was watching a super amateurish version of the same thing. I'd previously found a post on Steam detailing basically the same thing, but this makes me so much more confident in what I'm doing!

This was awesome! I tried modding this game last year, but I had performance issues the whole time. Eventually I got sick of dealing with it all, and I uninstalled the game. I just did everything you said to do in this video, plus downloading JohnnyGuitar NVSE since it is now required for the Unofficial Patch NVSE mod and the game is running SO FREAKIN WELL! I never could get to even 60-70 fps the first time I played and now I'm getting as high as 130 fps. THANK YOU

Its funny that a person on KZread can explain things better than most teachers I've meet can in the business of well... teaching I've been insulting and disrespectful to all teachers for saying this apparently sorry to the good teachers that matter

@Maximiliano Fauda Cariddi well said, I’m working towards being a teacher, and have been a teacher assistant for 4 years, it’s a whole lot of work staying ahead of students attitude, connecting with them in meaningful ways, keeping your lessons engaging and meaningful to both you and the students... it’s a massive juggling act and everyone assumes it’s no big deal to get up in front of a bunch of adolescents who couldn’t be bothered, but it is at the best of times by far the most rewarding work I’ve taken part in.

Hey, just some updated information from someone who's very late to New Vegas modding, Vortex now notifies you when you you choose to manage New Vegas, giving you an option to install the Script Extender right away. Just thought this information might be useful for future reference.

@@moduntilitbreaks I did to. Then I realized there are no spaces when typing "getnvseversion". No error after that.

The Script Extender (NVSE) posted its an old version, so you got to download the xNVSE 6.0 If Anyone is having problems once you got to install Unofficial patch, It has a newer version. The link Gopher posted has another link taking you to the "new" Unofficial patch THAT REQUIRES : -JohnnyGuitar NVSE -The Mod Configuration Menu (MCM)

I've been trying to get this game to run without crashing for months. This may be the culprit, thanks. I want to restore the game files to default so I can start patching it on a clean slate. So I can just delete all my mods on Vortex and verify the game files through Steam, right? Or just uninstall and re install again?

@@banginbadger75 uninstall and reinstall its the easy way to start from 0 without having to uninstall 1 by 1, and you can be sure that theres not gonna be a problem, but if by any reason the game download it's slow, you can uninstall the mods so you don't have to wait.

Gopher's tutorial voice is so soothing

The people that can't see the micro stutter also happen to be the same people who say the human eye can't see past 30fps.

I notice changes in fps beyond 30 I just do not see the stutter he refers too. There have been times when it was obvious but those were major stutters. Gopher may have either extraordinary vision or just be more sensitive to such stutters

@@malavengen There's a brief pause when he moves side to side, it's not as noticeable when you're watching a video of it because you're not in control when he shifts around but when you're playing the game and in control you'll notice it more.

super important tip for folks having trouble using vortex! Go back to the dashboard and make sure to launch the game from the lil NVSE tab not the tab at the top left of the screen. that tripped me up for a bit. you should also click its lil options button and make it primary so it just uses that

its 2021 and im here to let any newer modder know this is still relevant and even some of the things he has you do is not required but its all good practice have fun and stay safe out there couriers!

This was extremely helpful!! I was having such trouble with the Unofficial Patch (UP) NVSE mod because enabling it caused my game to crash every time I would load it. I realized that I was missing a required mod for the UP NVSE, and that was the JohnnyGuitar (JG) NVSE!! After downloading, enabling, and testing the JG NVSE, I enabled the UP NVSE and my game worked! 10/10 tutorial

Showing the NVSE file folder while installing was very helpful for troubleshooting a strange issue I was having with LStewieAI's Tweaks, thank you.

How many like me have been at home going, "Man, it's about time I cracked open New Vegas again"...? Gopher, you glorious wonder!

Just wanted to add that if you have a controller connected to your computer, than the command console will not appear (unlike Skyrim and FO4). You must disconnect the controller, doesn't matter whether the game is launched or not, and then hit the tilde key. Hope this helps if anyone else was struggling like I was. Thanks Gopher.

This is a really great and extreamly helpful series, it was really easy to follow and is what got me to finally learn how to mod New Vegas. So, I was wondering if you would ever consider making an updated version of your Fallout 3 modding guide or if you would even need to. Just a suggestion as I've been wanting to replay Fallout 3 with mods but don't really know where to start.

Used this guide to mod NV on the barely operational laptop my dad handed down to me and it worked perfectly. Now I'm doing it again on a genuine gaming tower. You're a godsend, Gopher!

NVSE config is already a folder in the latest version you dont need to make a new one or make the ini file!

Me: *complete this mod tutorial* Also Me: "I hear the Machine Spirit's voice."

Thank you sooo much bro when i built my pc a week ago i was so excited to play new vegas with mods, but i tried useing another mod overhaul guide and was spent 4 days in hell trying to get the game stable b4 even installing mods.With your guide i was able to mod the game in 1 night.I couldn’t stand playing the game on pc knowing a few mods like Project Nevada and clarity would make the game better 100% and now i can relatively mod without a guide.

Wow that tick fix Is amazing, I usually dont care for minor fixes but that really does make a difference.

Thank you so much for this; not only is Fallout NV an amazingly nostalgic game for me (one of the first I distinctly remember beating with my buddy back in HS) and modding it had always been a dream/goal of mine; it’s by far one of my favourite RPG’s. Sometimes i feel smart, and then i try to mod a game....

I've found myself with some free time and decided to reinstall NV...this video was just what I was looking for! Thanks a ton for this and you most certainly have earned a sub.

I just wanted to say how grateful I am for this video. I am at a point of 120+ hours in fNV and got it only 2 weeks ago, im at the point where bugs and other glitches are beginning to get very annoying and this helped alot. Going to be installing alot more "recreational" mods soon, Thanks :)

having an issue already. followed everything from video 1 & 2, then went to check the ui download had changed the ui and it had not i tried both the darnified option and vanilla plus. I have noticed that vortex is showing the mods as active in the mods menu but when you click on the plugins menu no mods just the main game folders. On the plugins menu i hit the "Deploy now" button and nothing is happening. any help?? not sure if its a mod staging issue??
