BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO GREATER SWISS MOUNTAIN DOGS

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog was developed in Switzerland as an all-purpose farm dog. They were needed as draft dogs to pull heavy carts, as drover dogs to move herds of dairy cattle, as watchdogs, and also as family companions. They are thought to be one of the oldest of the Swiss breeds, and their ancestors played a key role in the development of the Rottweiler and St. Bernard.
Their history as a draft dog makes Swissys natural pullers, and their strength is impressive. The average Swissy is capable of pulling a load of 3,000 pounds or more, so walking politely at the end of a leash can be a challenge. From the time he’s a puppy, it’s important to teach your Greater Swiss Mountain Dog how to behave properly when he’s on a leash.
Swissys tend to match their activity level to that of their human family, but need at least one or two walks a day. However, to keep your dog in peak condition, consider a more vigorous schedule of exercise. The working spirit and versatile background of the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog makes them super partners for many different activities, including drafting, which is the pulling of a cart or wagon. Other sports your Swissy might enjoy are agility, backpacking, herding, hiking, or obedience trials.

Sweetest, goofiest dog I've ever had. Mine developed epilepsy at 8 years old, and had to be put down at 10 after a terrible seizure that he never came back from.

I agree, they are wonderful dogs. My swissy was extremely smart, strong, gret with everyone and even could gently played with my sisters Pug. He lived up to 12 years when he got cancer and passed. I was devastated by his loss. Even my animal hating neighbor loved him.

We're on our second ridicules beast. They are almost too smart. They have perfected the art of selective hearing. Bo has the "Zoomies" nightly around 7:30 which at 130lbs and a mouthful of squeaky toy, sounds like a herd of elephants. Unfortunately, he is one of the few with Epilepsy. Started at 4 years, He'll be 5 in March. It took a while, but the drugs have greatly reduced the frequency of episodes.

I don't have a Swissy but my guy I belive is a mix of their shorter cousin, the sennenhund. Not sure if the temperament is the exact same but definitely a big cuddle bug and protective of the family

Swissies are Sennenhunds, in fact the original Sennunhund. Their Swiss name in German is “Grosser Schweizer Sennenhund” or in French “Grand Bouvier Suisse”. Berner Sennenhund, Appenzeller Sennenhund and Entlebucher Sennenhund are all descended from Swissies.

9-10 years is fairly common. My last (a red) lived to be 12+, but definitely slowed down considerably after 11 yrs, and spent most of the last year sleeping and enjoying doggy retirement.

My swissy is Still alive at 13, healthy.. She plays and moves around OK. Definitely way slower than before, lost some strength in the rear legs so stairs can be somewhat tough.. Luckily our new house barely has stairs and we block the stairs so she doesn't try and go up and down during the day
