BEGINNER Crochet Market Bag Tutorial

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Introducing the Crochet Market Bag. This pattern plus the Beach Bag Pattern is actually the same pattern. There is a difference in the pattern and that is the yarn that is being recommended.
Lily Sugar’n Cream and Bernat Handicrafter is both made by Yarnspirations. Lily is mostly available in the USA where Handicrafter is available in Canada. Today’s pattern, the yarn recommended in the pattern is for Bernat Handicrafter.

    Thank you, I really enjoyed making this bag, especially the neat way the base was designed. I used a finer yarn Rico cotton essentials and a 3.5mm hook so added 20 stitches to the base so the bag used 115g. This first one is a gift for a friend, going to make another for me as I can tell I'll get a lot of use out of it.

    Thank you for this video it's wonderful. I had the pattern but needed to see project in motion. You do a great job. I have finished my bag. I crocheted the bottom a little different. I crocheted 2" of single crochet then I started my message loops but I crocheted into the 5th stitch and it made a web design. Like columns of loops. The fact is I read direction without knowing bottom of bag needed 12 inches of single crochet. I wish I can show picture because it came out very nice. I like to take patterns and make the design different to my own.

    I made one of these market bags after finding the pattern on the sleeve of my Bernat yarn. Not a big fan of this bag. Strap would work better for me if it was attached on the short sides and wasn’t so long. Even the mesh part ends up being too long. IT STRETCHES A LOT! Next time I’ll crochet less rounds of the mesh and alter the strap to my liking.

    I know it’s good for vegetables or the beach or even laundry, but I was thinking of the stitches stretching also. I made a different bag and added a lining so it wouldn’t stretch out. Still 100% washable and at least for me, more functional

    Thanks for your very helpful video! I really like this project. However, I have a request and a couple of questions: For us beginners, could you go more slowly and show the stitches at the beginning and end of rows, and at any other transitions, more clearly? I'm sure experienced crocheters understand what you mean, but sometimes it's hard to see just where the hook is going. Although I paid close attention to the directions, and in a couple of places had to go back and re-try to get mine to look like the video, the top of my finished bag flares out. I didn't have a 4.5 mm hook so used an H hook, and the bottom of my bag measures 13-1/2" and the top measures about 15". The top section directions were the easiest of all to me, so I don't understand why mine doesn't look like the finished bag in the video. This doesn't affect its usefulness, but I just wonder if others turned out this way. I don't understand why the top is bigger than the bottom. Also, was I supposed to turn the bag inside out before starting on the handle? The slip stitched section to attach the end of the handle looks better on the reverse side,. Not a big deal especially with ombre yarn, but I think it would be more noticeable with a solid color yarn. Again, thanks for a great video.

  • @TheCrochetCrowd

    @TheCrochetCrowd

    If it's getting bigger, you have done what I have done on these types of projects. You most likely are counting mesh for stitches that should not be. It's hard to explain over email. If you are getting bigger, the project is relaxing but there should not be a mesh space count difference.

    I'm about half done using my H (5.0 mm or size 8) hook, because I couldn't find a size 7 (4.5 mm) hook in the store. I think my bag is looking a bit larger than his, but it's not too large for a market or beach bag. I might try my G (4.25 mm) hook next time, idk. There are directions for a very similar bag inside the yarn label (Sugar n Cream, big 12 oz. skein of Emerald Isle), and it said use an H hook. If you are finished with yours now, how big did it turn out?

It wasn't any better price than what's available locally, though. Perhaps any brand of 100% cotton, 4-ply or worsted weight yarn would also work?
