Beginner Comic Artists: Before you start

As Comic Artists, we may have many ideas and projects in the back of our mind, but sometimes we fail to realise our own limitations. We can definitely start and learn along the way, but when it comes to something we are attached to, we may want to change our approach. In this video, I go over the concept of practicing with smaller digestible comics first, learning without much risk or adverse consequences as a result. We give ourselves a flexible way to attempt, learn or fail, in order to prepare ourselves for the thing we’re striving for, that long running (or short and sweet) Manga/Webcomic idea. Hope you enjoy :3c

Honestly, I wasn’t sure how to title this video, so I hope it wasn’t misleading x-x. This really helped me finally start making comics, instead of just PREPARING to make one lol. Hope it also helps anyone else out there!

It's amply titled. It's here the meat of everything really starts. Preparation is all what leads up to this moment, the moment where ideas take form, styles takes shape, the foundation where the ease of everything you do after this is determined by the solidity of the foundation. And the better you get, a point that everyone should repeat reminding themselves of, that we will get better, as we should, although not linearly, it's the journey that is important to partake, the easier the execution process will also be. And you are also right that we need to push ourselves. Not letting great ideas not take substance and form, because we don't think we have the ability to pull it off. Having said that, it is imperative, I feel, that we find the find balance between ambition in execution and creative solutions that adhere to in the sphere of our current abilities. As perfectionists, we wouldn't want style over substance, or else the great story drowns. Or worse yet, letting a great story never being told. Great work, Aeryma

Personally, I feel, your most important video yet. With intelligent, wise and well thought out points, that bring clarity to our usual hinderances we put in front of ourselves, and how to simplify this so we don't get overwhelmed, and we take the journey allowing ourselves to improve, and remember there is no failure, but the one we don't make.

You're not wrong- a well thought out and cohesive story is hard to achieve. I think what helped me the most (not that I'm good at it), was to consume more stories from other artists Comics, Games and other media can serve as a good foundation to inspire you. I'd start by thinking about what your interests are, stories you like, characters you enjoy- make a list and try to build connections between them Hope it helps c:

I'm glad you found it helpful! I still have a lot to learn in the writing department, but what helped me get started was @/AbbieEmmons. She has a lot of videos about setting up a story. You can also check out McKay & Gray who talk about comics specifically (I'm sure there're many others channels as well) For my current project I just googled '3 Act Story Structure' and found a guide on how to approach each phase, and that seemed to help me a lot. Sorry, I don't have many resources, but I hope it's useful. Writing is tough, so I feel your pain x.x Good luck with your story c:
