Beginner adventure riding - My adventure riding wife

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Adventure riding is challenging. Otherwise, it would just be called riding. Even as we improve, we challenge ourselves more.
However, getting started is when it is most overwhelming.
This is my wife Chris, and she is an adventurous person. Recently, she decided to try adventure riding. But would this be the one thing that was too adventurous for her? This is her story.

    I think the best advice would be to get confident on the road first, then transfer that to the dirt. Second to that, travel light. When you get back from your first trip, throw out anything you didn’t use.

    Finally finished the whole vid. I have loved your offroad vids but this is the first one that has pushed me over the edge of "I need an adventure/dirt bike (and so does my wife!). We've got road bikes and have been out to Settlers and done Putty but we stick to the tarred roads. Kinda keen to get into the camping/dirt road fun. (one of your first vids where you went past Settlers you captured our 2 L plater bikes as we were sleeping off a heavy saturday night with the locals!)

    Noticed a few times in the video the 390 was left in street mode with the MTC still on. I really struggled on gravel and dirt until I remembered to turn that off. The traction control on the 390 seems really rudimentary, and whilst it generally works great on road, I found it contributed to a few unwanted stalls in the dirt.

    Yep, nicely spotted. That is something we worked out later, not riding it myself in the dirt I didn't realise, and then Chris not familar with it didn't realise either. But on a receny ride, you'll see next week, we realised it was causing issues and turning it off made it much more predictable.

    That was fantastic to see Chris out on the bike and you're teaching her well mate. I know you would have already mentioned it to her to watch out for those causeway crossings👍.

    I've been driving a car for 10 years and i got my L's for a motorbike in Feb. The plan is to trade in my 4wd for a dualsport so the timing of this video has been great for me This would be so good for your wife to look back at in years to come

    Even just having lessons around town put a smile on my face aha What bikes did your wife look at before landing on the 390? I like the idea of a dual sport but part of me thinks a small adv bike will handle the freeway better.

    @@JoshSinnott97 I had a 390 before I switched to a Honda 300 Rally to focus more on the offroad bits. The 390 is a lot better freeway machine. I found the stock seat all day comfortable, and with a larger windshield as seen in this video, wind fatigue was never an issue.

    Thanks for taking the time to reply mate. I'd love to have a more off road focused bike, I've been seriously considering the crf300L funnily enough but the amount of money I'd want to eventually pour into it with suspension and engine mods to compete with the competition it starts to not make as much sense even though the upgrades would happen over the space of a few years. And realistically I have to ride on the road now often than dirt and on the odd occasion I need to carry a passenger, the crf couldn't handle that. Eventually I'd have 1 offroad bike and 1 street bike but I'll wait until I get my r license that way I've got more choice and have more riding experience A lot of people like the 390 though. Are you happy with your switch from the 390 to the crf?

  • @lachlancannard

    @lachlancannard

    3 ай бұрын

    @JoshSinnott97 I am happy with the 300, I'll keep this bike for a long time I imagine. For two up and mostly road riding, the 300 is not ideal. If I could still only have one bike, something closer to the KTM 390 would be my pick. Just ditch the stock TKC70 tyres, they can't handle even the tiniest bit of mud.

    Lock the front brake. Roll the bike up on the front axle. (Lock with a big rubber band, you have ready in your pocket.)

    That ktm doesn't like lugging at all. Very interesting

  • @lachlancannard

    @lachlancannard

    3 ай бұрын

    It really doesn't lug well. As a newer rider, you naturally want to keep the RPMs low when going slow, and the bike really likes being above 5000, so it took a lot of getting used to. Did 5000km on the 390, but switched to a 2 bike setup, so I could get something more offroad focused.
