The alphabet is almost exactly like the German alphabet. Only v is replaced with ü (which also exist in the language 😄) ... but of course the alphabet sounds different in Chinese than it sounds in German 😂 Thank you for this really helpful video!! 🥰👍🏻

By the rules of language in the rest of the world, Mandarin and Cantonese are separate and distinct languages, like many of the other separate and distinct Chinese languages. Cantonese uses separate different words, separate distinct setence structures, By all the rules of language accepted outside of Main Land China, Cantonese and Mandarin are clearly distinct separate languages. . There are languages that can reasonably be called dialects of one of the separate Chinese languages. Haka for example, can reasonably claimed as a dialect of the Han Chinese group of languages just like Mandarin. Haka uses the same words and sentence structures with differing pronunciation. . It is the Chinese Communist Party, that insists that all Chinese languages are dialects, it is part of their broader, "One China Polocy".

1:59 i started with mandarin in about few weeks but eventually ended up full on cantonese later. the mere differences between some mandarin initials like z, c and s are hard to swallow for me

I've been studying Mandarin for about a year now from books and videos, but I've had difficulty finding any Cantonese resources. Are there any good books on Cantonese? I've been able to learn 关东话 tones from KZread videos but I haven't been able to find any grammar or vocabulary books. Also pinyin for Cantonese seems weird. Do you know of any Cantonese books for learning 关东话?

i recommend you use apps or websites where you can talk to people who speak cantonese, like language sharing apps. majority of them also know mandarin so they can help you translate :] sorry i dont have sources to share, i best learn by speaking to people directly myself

She is not in China

No. Putonghua is Modern standard Chinese, but it is not Mandarin. Putonghua took reference on Mandarin but cut away lot of pronunciation Characters, such as 兒化。

My wife gave up on teaching me Chinese.

Dialects are mutually intelligible. “Chinese” is the same as saying “Romance”. It’s not a language, it’s a language group, of unintelligible languages.

A wise person once said 'a language is a dialect with an army'. I feel like there's sometimes a vested interest in keeping some different languages as merely dialects while promoting some quite similar dialects as separate languages

some words from them are not intelligible, for example 曱甴 you will never say that in Mandarin and only say it in cantonese

The distinction is always very fuzzy. The main reason they’re called dialects is political, but that’s as valid a reason as any other.
