Before the Achaemenid Empire: Early Kings and the Founding of the Persian Kingdom of Anshan

Most lovers of ancient history have heard of Cyrus the Great and the Achaemenid Persian Empire, but few know who the first rulers of this dynasty were or how the initial kingdom, centered around the once great Elamite city of Anshan, was founded. In this program, we'll take a look at the early beginnings of the small kingdom that would go on to become the Achaemenid Persian Empire.

    Not really because the ancient Aryan civilization of Tall-i-bukan from 5400B.C in Fars province of Iran was never mentioned which both Persian Hakhamanish and Sasanians capitals are built Next to, which even Darius the great inscription from 520B.C says "I am Darius the great king, king of kings, king of countries containing all kinds of men, king in this great earth far and wide, son of Hystaspes, an Achaemenid, a Persian, son of a Persian, an Aryan, having Aryan lineage.

    I had no idea about this part of "proto" Achaemenid history. It's fascinating how many things can be revealed if the people in question or some of their neighbors leave written records. I wonder how much more would we be able to find out if for example the Minoan Linear A script is to be deciphered. Great video as always!

    Another excellent video Khorush jan. We all read about the Achaemenid but when we read about Cyrus the great we imagine him within the context of the Achaemenid empire, but as it’s founder Cyrus and his endeavours must be seen in the context of the previous age that he was born into. Also the Elamites integrated with the Persians and were Traditionally the scribes and civil servants of the Persians. In fact Cassandra the wife of Cyrus was said to have been an Elamite. I would love to know more about the movement of the Persians before arriving in Persia. For example their Participation in the battle of 10 kings mentioned in RigVeda 3.

  • @HistorywithCy

    @HistorywithCy

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks baradar, appreciate it! Yeah, the Persepolis fortification tablets show how widely Elamite was used, at least in Iran since until Darius, there supposedly was no script for Old Persian. Most of the scribes were Elamites in Parsa, but in other areas Aramaic (what they call Imperial Aramaic) was the primary language of administration. I'm sure that many of the early Persian kings married Anshanite noble women to help legitimize themselves as Anshan's rulers as well, so it's natural that there would be some Elamite influence at court. With regard to the battle of the ten kings, I personally don't know of any Persian involvement in it, but I also am not too familiar with the battle itself as I've read only very little of the Rg Veda. As always, thanks so much for your support, means a lot! And more Persian history coming soon! Stay safe!

  • @HistorywithCy

    @HistorywithCy

    3 жыл бұрын

    Nope, you're correct! During the Neo-Sumerian/Third Dynasty of Ur, king Shulgi had given rule of Anshan to a man named Ybarat of the Shimashki family. He stayed loyal to the Neo-Sumerian regime in Ur, even when Susa and other parts of Elam had rebelled. However, during the reign of the last Neo-Sumerian king, Ibbi-Sin, an old Ybarat apparently decided to declare his independence and even took over Susa. His son, Kindattu, about 20 years later invaded Sumer and apparently took Ibbi-Sin to Elam where he was probably executed. Good memory man! All this was happening between 2050-2004 BC... the Persians came about 1400 years later, so yeah, you can see how long of a history Anshan has had. Thanks again for stopping by, really appreciate it! @علي ياسر do you know what Nestorian even means ? Nestorian was a christian sect. They were known as Chaldeans and Assyrians, but they were Nestorian, than they became church of the east, and than Chaldeans left the Church of the east over a dispute involving the death of the Patriarch, the Assyrians wanted to keep the patriarchy in the same blood line so they put the dead Patriarchs son who was 8 years old. The Chaldeans found this absurd and left the church of the east. When the Chaldeans left, the Assyrians named the church of the east, The Assyrian Church of the east. You know whats funny though ? In the bible it says The Chaldean native tongue is Aramaic, and until today we still speak Aramaic, and we have traditional holidays called Akitu which was passed down to us by our ancestors. No one gave us the name Chaldeans or Assyrians. We are the original inhabitants of Iraq.

    I don’t think so called “old persian” ever existed because the so called “old persian” is today known as one of the kurdish dialects and the people that speaks this dialect always and still call themselves as Kurds, they never defined themselves as “Persians” and never called their dialect as “old persian.” That’s why l don’t understand how did the Persians come up with the conclusion, the non existing “old persian” story! English pronunciation of persian way of translating Cyrus is ‘Currush” that’s very wrong, because Cyrus was a king, why would he name himself with a name which’s not related to royalty? While the name of Cyrus in kurdish language corresponds exactly to the royalty and it’s identical to the power or the mission he/ Cyrus had. Cyrus in kurdish would be the same as Cyrus which means The Rising King. Kurdish-english: Cy/Ky/Key=King. CYA/Kya/Keya=The King. Kurdish-english: Cyrus/Kyrus= The Rising King. So since the Medes were the ancestors of the today’s Kurds, we can call the Median empire under Cyrus is only a transition of the throne from one king to another. The Persian story never matches anything that Cyrus was about.

    Most of your historical sources here based on the book of Herodotos and l really always wondered if “Persian” empire ever existed! What l personally after going through the historical books as Herodotos was one of my sources, believe that the people that call themselves as Persians have twisted the Medes/ Medians history and called it as their “own!” Although as you referred one thing, which was the so called “old” Persian, which l personally doubt if it ever existed! Because Persians says that “old” persian derived from pahlawi/pehlewi, but the ridiculous part is exactly this claim because the people that speaks the so called old persian/“ pehlewi never defined themselves as “Persians.” Pehlewi speaking people call themselves as Kurds and defines their language as a dialect of Kurdish language, just like other 5-6 other Kurdish dialects, kurmanji, kirmanckî/dimili, sorani, gorani, hewremani, kelhori, lori. • @dreas4010

    @dreas4010

    You are right to question the reliance on Herodotus, but the truth is he is the most detailed source we have. Unfortunately we have zero Median written sources and most of what we know of the Medes comes from Herodotus, leading some scholars to call into question the whole idea of a "Median Empire" as described in his and subsequent Greco-Roman works. It was likely more akin to a federation comprised of various Iranic tribes, replaced by another loose union under Cyrus II before gradually transforming into what would eventually become the more recognizable Persian Empire. The Persians however, are better attested than their northern cousins and we know what they called themselves and their language thanks to royal inscriptions and administrative clay tablets. Darius I called himself a Persian son of a Persian, an Iranian of Iranian lineage. The Old Persian language was called Iranian as well, and Ahura Mazda is described as the "god of the Iranians" in the Elamite version of the Behistun inscription. The Persian language would later become known as Parsik/Parsig in the middle Iranian period. The term "Pahlawi" can mean different things in different contexts, but is primarily used by scholars today to designate the Middle Persian (not the Old Persian!) language and writing system. It is ultimately derived from the Persian name for the Parthians (Pahlawan) and gave its name to the Aramaic writing system used by both the Parthians and Persians. How Pehlewi acquired its name I don't know, but considering the province of Parthia (Pahlaw/Falah) was located in western Iran in the Sasanian and early Islamic period, a connection between the two is highly possible.

It bordered Media on the west, Hyrcania on the north west, Margiana on the north east, and Aria on the south east". >> en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parthia Also the name is recorded in various ways but never as Pahlaw/Falah. Armenian for example is not, it's closest relative is quite apparently Greek instead. Western Indoeuropean (incl. most European languages) is also another major family within Indoeuropean, and then there are lesser branches like Albanian (Illyrian?) and the extinct Luwio-Hittite (alias "Anatolian"), Tocharian and Traco-Dacian (?). They can each be tracked archaeologically, at least in most cases: Western Indoeuropean comes from Corded Ware and Unetice, Greco-Armenian almost certainly from Vucedol and Indo-Iranian from those who stayed behind in the steppes until late (with Indo-Aryan moving to southern Asia first, in the Bronze Age, and Iranic only later, in the Iron Age, almost at the gates of written History). The term Iranic is absolutely mainstream in linguistics, you may of course consider it "inadequate" for whichever reasons but I'll stick to it.
